  1. I happen to agree with this. I’ve been hit in the nuts on more than one occasion by some yahoos tossing a football around on a beach. They are ignorant, uncaring and entitled jerks that have no regard for others.

  2. $1K? That’s it? Wouldn’t $2K be twice as effective? At least get your money’s worth and bring out the lawn darts, I say.
This story needs to be filed under the “You-couldn’t-make-this-shite-up” heading. Wow.

  3. So Commiefornia has run it’s economy into the $hitter and this is their latest and greatest idea for generating income? A heavy handed fine for throwing a football or a frisbee on a f**king beach?! Wow. I guess trying to drum up income by encouraging businesses to set up in Cali is just too darn difficult. Lowering business tax to bring them in and employ citizens is just too practical an idea. No, lets just over-regulate the people and extort money from them while they try to enjoy what little they have left since they are already taxed to death and living in a bankrupt socialist state.

  4. mike and Robert L, exactly.
About the only thing that is not against the law there is singing the Internationale.

  5. This is the same state that has schools that have banned running, laughing, pointing candy canes, taking scissors to sewing class, and hugging – the zero tolerance policy includes, besides a suspnsion and possible visit by CPS to the home, the school having police “arrest” the student.
Perhaps the state legislature is just catching up to their school boards level of fascism.

  6. Baseball games by kids should also be banned anywhere but in designated areas. When I was kid we used to get a gang together and just go play in any field that was available, without adult supervision!
A window MIGHT have gotten broken if any of us had been able to hit that far, and there COULD have been injuries to any passers-by.
Some of us used to get our pants dirty!
    Imagine the horror!
You CAN legislate a perfect world, you just have to be able to spot the dangers and outlaw them before someone gets an Owie!
btw, those bikini-clad young women you often see on beaches should be made to cover up. I was tanning at Gyro Beach here in Kelowna last year and suffered a severe case of eye strain.

  7. Oh, Ok, I get it now.
If the Saint Andreas Fault does go active and California slips off into the pacific ocean do you classify that as population control or land management ?

  8. Why don’t they pass a law that says “what isn’t explicitly allowed is prohibited” and be done with it.

  9. If the Saint Andreas Fault does go active and California slips off into the pacific ocean do you classify that as population control or land management ?
    Community improvement.

  10. No doubt we’ve all had less-than-ideal encounters with idiots on the beach. I mean this goes as far back as that guy that tossed sand into that scrawny guy’s face and laughed about it. But resorting to government mandated rules as to how a society should behave is beyond the pale at best and Orwellian at worst.
Here in Ottawa city council is mulling over banning smoking in all public parks, patios etc.
Famously, Trudeau once said that the gov’t has no place in the bedrooms of the nation. In light of the LA County and Ottawa stories can we honestly believe that that one refuge from gov’t oversight is still safe?

    It’s called JUSTICE…

  12. D Morris: “A window MIGHT have gotten broken if any of us had been able to hit that far, and there COULD have been injuries to any passers-by.”
When I was a kid playing pick-up baseball in a small field near our house, I really connected with the ball (with a heavy bat) and that sucker took off. A high fly ball headed right for a neighbour’s car (a Mercury I believe). Lucky for me the ball flew over the car and missed it by a few feet.

  13. What do you expect from a society that needs ‘saving’ from ‘saving’? “A leading US health official has warned that a campaign started by a children’s hospital to fight childhood obesity poses health risks.
Alan Guttmacher, a child health expert at the National Institutes of Health, says Atlanta-based Strong4Life “carries a great risk of increasing stigma”. The campaign has been criticised for using stark images of overweight children to warn of obesity risks.” http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-16958865
“In a letter to fat activist Shannon Russell, Dr Guttmacher, director of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, said childhood stigma “can reinforce unhealthy behaviours”. Stigma also “poses risks to the psychological health” of obese adolescents, Dr Guttmacher wrote.”
    Need more be said?

  14. California…….always California. Long lasting legacy to the principal, when all the sane laws are already on the books, just wing it with the insane. The sheeple are used to it and know that home of the free was just a joke.

  15. “Famously, Trudeau once said that the gov’t has no place in the bedrooms of the nation.”
Anyone up for a game of bedroom frizbee?

  16. One day, Kate, you will find a way to remove the redundancy from that heading.

    Heh.

  17. Ratt,
A few years ago, a western U.S. Senator, with a good load of bourbon under his belt, told me that North America should have been divided along the Mississippi and northward to Hudson Bay, instead of along the 49th. When I asked him how California would fit into his ideal country he said, “When the Big One hits it’ll slide west and the Japs can have it.”
    True story, Scouts honour.

  18. I’ve said it here before: the dominant ideology of the neo-fascists is “Whatever everybody doesn’t want, nobody gets”.
So long as there’s one Willard around whining “Somebody, once, hit me in the nuts”, that’s it for everyone who enjoys Frisbee or tossing a ball around. The mere apprehension – just the thought of it, mind you – that someone, somewhere, for just a few seconds might be inconvenienced is reason enough for the neo-fascists to strike. You might think that leaving your lawn in a natural state is a proud statement of nature’s beauty, but as long as there’s one prissy neighbour who thinks it’s ugly, you’re going to be the one cleaning it up.
And the neo-fascists don’t mind contradictory policies; these people have taken Fitzgerald’s sardonic observation ” the test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function” and raised it to an art form. How else can you explain their rants about childhood obesity, with their concomitant desire to ban sugar, meat, fats, etc. from our diets, until all we’re left to chew on are Scottish oat cakes, with their equal vigour when it comes to banning every form of childhood play – tag, baseball, soccer, etc. – from the schoolyards of our nation?
Push will soon have to come to shove. Hope we’re all ready!

  19. Now, KevinB don’t get me wrong. I abhor rules and regulations such as this but these assholes that toss their balls around without care or concern for others are out of line. Am I supposed to put up with getting my giblets crushed because a bunch of jerks think they own the beach?? It wasn’t too long ago that people had a care for others. Today, not so much. So, what’s the solution? I’m a 67 yr old retired dude that saved my money so that I could retire in relative peace and quiet. I don’t begrudge people from having their fun but when they intrude on my peace and quiet when relaxing and reading Steyn or Coulter’s latest on the beach, I get testy.
Let them go and play with their balls somewhere else on the beach where no one cares. Is that too much to ask?

  20. Caveat, no Mexican will ever be charged under this law.
Willard, Lord Of The Rats said: “I’m a 67 yr old retired dude that saved my money so that I could retire in relative peace and quiet.”
And you went to California? Duuuude!
Say, do you drive really slow in the carpool lane too? If so, those rivets you see in your rear-view mirror are mine.

  21. @ Willard at February 9, 2012 7:27 PM
So you want peace and quiet while other people want to play and have fun. You want another law that sides with your way of thinking. On a public beach yet. Bring a book or get off the beach. Jeez,….no wonder society is so screwed up. Moving to a quieter spot is not a option I guess.
You say “I don’t begrudge people from having their fun but when they intrude on my peace and quiet when relaxing and reading Steyn or Coulter’s latest on the beach, I get testy”.
Look in the mirror and you might see the problem with that attitude.

  22. I’m with Willard on this. Freedom doesn’t include the right to be inconsiderate – i.e. to piss all over your neighbours. Too bad that he doesn’t have a 200 lb son to reason with the assholes on his behalf.
Phantom: What the hell kind of community did you grow up(?)in?

  23. OK, Willard, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt, but seriously – you even say yourself “Go somewhere else on the beach and play”. The neo-fascists are NOT giving anyone that option. Because a few jerks interfere with everyone else, their response is “NO ONE can play”. Shurely a more enlightened response would be to designate certain areas for ball/frisbee playing, and certain areas where those activities are forbidden. Or, post signs saying that people who are playing ball/frisbee are responsible for any disturbances they cause, put a fine on that, and prosecute the jerks, while leaving the majority of considerate people alone. Just banning it outright is the type of over-reaction that the neo-fascists embrace with glee.

  24. KevinB- Agreed.
BTW-I didn’t retire to California. Visited there once in the ’70’s. Once was enough.
