There is a simple answer to this. Why should all MPs be paid the same? Some are worthy, many are worthless.
My proposal: pay MPs the same scale (and same pension benefits) as they were receiving when they worked in the private sector prior to their entry into politics. If they continue to get re-elected, allow them pay increases equivalent to what their colleagues still in private industry are getting.
Being an MP is a form of civic duty. It should not hurt one’s financial prospects to become an MP, neither should it be looked upon as a sinecure.
Perhaps if we adopted this model, we’d have more project managers, engineers and CEOs, and fewer barmaids?
Iberia – PM Stephen Harper WAS one of those who opposed the pension – he was not an M.P. when the house voted; he was working for the taxpayers association. You and your ilk just blab, you never think to look anything up.
People who work as M.P.’s should not get big paychecks because they should not spend much time in the Legislature. They should meet once every two or three years, get their work done in a month or so and go home to their regular jobs. Theirs should not be a a ‘big comfy fur’ job to sleep and eat and loll around on; the MP job should be designed for patriots who have no motive but protecting the Liberty of the citizens, attending to the army/navy/airforce and collecting property taxes to pay for the two jobs that they were elected to do. The PM needs 5 or six full time ministers and six or seven secretaries: period. Same for provinces and cities. We do not need leagues of silly servants to leech off We, the taxpayers in the name of the gument.
A full scale downsize is what is required, IMO. Chop, chop.
I notice he is asking for us to elect the “best” MP’s. Sounds like time to arrange to throw that gud 4 nothing out of office next election so we can get the best.
