  2. The quattro system was just too expensive for most of us, when it first came out. I always wanted to run one on some logging roads, just to see how much it could stand. Nowadays all-wheel-drive is for SUVs, and performance cars have gone back to rear-wheel with traction control. AWD just burns too much gas. The top dog of AWD sedans, nowadays, is Acura. My girlfriend used to have one. What a rocket! Now she wants a German car, so maybe I’ll get to wring out a quattro yet. Forestry Trunk Road, here I come.

  3. In Parliament today not only did young Turdough give himself a nickname he’ll wear for the rest of his pathetic political career, he was wearing one of those Guy Fawkes Occupy masks when he did it.

  4. I have an open question for all political historians:
It’s frequently being mentioned in regard to New Gingrich these days that he ended the “40 year reign of the Democrats in the House of Representatives”.
Does anyone know why things were so slanted in that branch of the U.S. government for so long? I welcome a detailed explanation if you have one.

  5. Some years ago a small rural town in Spain twinned with a similar town in Greece.
The Mayor of the Greek town visited the Spanish town. When he saw the palatial mansion belonging to the Spanish mayor he wondered how he could afford such a house.
The Spaniard said; “You see that bridge over there? The EU gave us a grant to build a four-lane bridge, but by building a single lane bridge with traffic lights at either end this house could be built”.
The following year the Spaniard visited the Greek town. He was simply amazed at the Greek Mayor’s house, gold taps, marble floors, it was marvellous.
When he asked how this could be afforded the Greek said; “You see that bridge over there?”
    The Spaniard replied; “No.”

  6. Robert: We are kindred spirits, except that when I expressed that question on many occasions I substituted the word “stupid” with “wrong”.
And…yes we are…at least that is what my wife of 38 years maintains.
Quite apart from the fact that I have maintained her in a fully paid for $1.2 million house, and with every imaginable luxury.
If I seem bitter, I’m not. I come from the old school which dictates that a man provides for his family, as best as he can. It seems that I have provided somewhat better than others.
But…proof again that love, indeed, is blind…

Sharia a good fit in some areas, says academic
AUSTRALIA’S Muslims would not move towards a parallel legal system if some Islamic practices were better integrated into the existing legal framework, a University of Sydney academic said.
The Sydney law school lecturer Ghena Krayem said extensive interviews with NSW Muslim leaders and community members found they were not seeking a recognition of sharia in areas where it was contrary to existing Australian law, such as polygamy. (Yeah dude FOR now)

“Wu Zili, the acting mayor of Shanwei county, where Wukan is situated, said that the government would resolve the situation in the village “according to the law” and that it would “take the merits of the villagers’ demands into consideration”.

    …-
“Thousands rally in China land grab village”
“WUKAN, China — Thousands of residents of a Chinese village under police blockade rallied on Thursday to demand the government take action over illegal land grabs and the death in custody of a local leader.
The people of Wukan — a fishing village in the wealthy southern province of Guangdong with about 13,000 inhabitants — accuse corrupt local officials of stealing communal land without compensating them.
Wukan has been the scene of repeated and at times violent protests over land seizures, a hugely contentious issue in China, where authorities are accused of colluding with developers in lucrative real estate deals.
Local anger boiled over with the death Sunday in police custody of a village leader tasked with negotiating with authorities over the row. The village, which has been abandoned by local officials, is now surrounded by police checkpoints.”

There is absolutely no way I would be standing on one of those corners when these guys (and Michelle, with her comparisons to Ballet) come screaming and swaying around them. Of course, it has always been my intention to die in bed, with a priest and 40 nuns praying for wretched soul. (Still, I gotta envy people who like to live on the edge, and who are good enough at it, that they can pay their own funeral expenses).

  16. I still get a kick out of reading this old email, give a Corvette a 200 MPH headstart and a top fueler will pass it within a 1/4 mile:
    “ACCELERATION PUT INTO PERSPECTIVE
    * One Top Fuel dragster 500 cubic-inch Hemi engine
makes more horsepower (8,000 HP) than the first 4 rows of cars at the Daytona 500.
    * Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes
11.2 gallons of nitro methane per second; a fully loaded 747
consumes jet fuel at the same rate with 25% less energy being produced.
    * A stock Dodge Hemi V8 engine cannot produce
enough power to merely drive the dragster’s supercharger.
    * With 3000 CFM of air being rammed in by the
supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into a
near-solid form before ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic
    lock at full throttle.
    * At the stoichiometric 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture for
nitro methane the flame front temperature measures 7050 degrees F.
    * Nitro methane burns yellow. The spectacular
white flame seen above the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen,
dissociated from atmospheric water vapor by the searing exhaust
    gases.
    * Dual magnetos supply 44 amps to each spark plug.
This is the output of an arc welder in each cylinder.
    * Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed
during a pass. After 1/2 way, the engine is dieseling from compression plus
the glow of exhaust valves at 1400 degrees F. The engine can only be
shut down by cutting the fuel flow.
    * If spark momentarily fails early in the run,
unburned nitro builds up in the affected cylinders and then explodes with
sufficient force to blow cylinder heads off the block in pieces or split
    the block in half.
    * Dragsters reach over 300 MPH before you have
    completed reading this sentence.
    * In order to exceed 300 MPH in 4.5 seconds,
dragsters must accelerate an average of over 4 G’s. In order to reach 200 MPH
well before half-track, the launch acceleration approaches 8
    G’s.
    * Top Fuel engines turn approximately 540
    revolutions from light to light!
    * Including the burnout, the engine must only
    survive 900 revolutions under load.
    * The redline is actually quite high at 9500 RPM.
    * THE BOTTOM LINE: Assuming all the equipment is
paid off, the crew worked for free, & for once, NOTHING BLOWS UP, each
run costs an estimated $1,000 per second.
0 to 100 MPH in .8 seconds (the first 60 feet of the run)
0 to 200 MPH in 2.2 seconds (the first 350 feet of the run)
6 g-forces at the starting line (nothing accelerates faster on land)
6 negative g-forces upon deployment of twin ‘chutes at 300 MPH
An NHRA Top Fuel Dragster accelerates quicker than any other land vehicle on earth quicker than a jet fighter plane . . . quicker than the space shuttle.
The current Top Fuel dragster elapsed time record is
4.420 seconds for the quarter-mile (2004, Doug Kalitta). The
top speed record is 337.58 MPH as measured over the last 66′
of the run (2005, Tony Schumacher).
    Putting this all into perspective:
You are driving the average $140,000 Lingenfelter
twin-turbo powered Corvette Z06. Over a mile up the road, a Top Fuel
dragster is staged & ready to launch down a quarter-mile strip as you
pass. You have the advantage of a flying start. You run the ‘Vette
hard up through the gears and blast across the starting line & pass the
dragster at an honest 200 MPH. The ‘tree’ goes green for both of
    you at that moment.
The dragster launches & starts after you. You keep
your foot down hard, but you hear an incredibly brutal whine that sears
your eardrums & within 3 seconds the dragster catches & passes you.
He beats you to the finish line, a quarter-mile away from where you just
passed him. Think about it – from a standing start, the dragster had
spotted you 200 MPH & not only caught, but nearly blasted you off the road
when he passed you within a mere 1320 foot long race!
    That’s acceleration ! ”

“Tempers are fraying in austerity-racked Portugal.
A top socialist politician was taped at a party dinner calling for diplomatic warfare against the EU’s northern powers and issuing threats of debt default.”
“We have an atomic bomb that we can use in the face of the Germans and the French: this atomic bomb is simply that we won’t pay,” said Pedro Nuno Santos, vice-president of the Socialist Party in the parliament.
“Debt is our only weapon and we must use it to impose better conditions, because recession itself is what is stopping us complying with the (EU-IMF Troika) accord. We should make the legs of the German bankers tremble,” he said.
The comments came as Portugal slides deeper into recession, with the economy expected to contract by 3pc next year. Protesters marched through Lisbon on Thursday denouncing plans by the new conservative government to raise the working week to 42 hours. Wages are being cut 16pc for higher paid, and 8pc for lower paid public workers.”

    First, DWright. Hahahahaha.
Second, Stan. While I love the smell of nitro in the morning, at the end of the day, I’m driving my Z06 on the street anywhere I please. Plus, after setting a new Omaha to Sioux City dodge the trooper record at an hour and ten minutes and winning the unofficial I-29 sweepstakes, there remained two-thirds a tank of fuel.
