  1. As usual, it’s bourgeois western liberals who are condoning the suppression of women in the name of political correctness.
Female muslim dress IS NOT A FASHION STATEMENT. IT IS A POLITICAL STATEMENT.

  2. Odd,but there were more commenters who disagreed with Kenney at the NP,than at the Red Star!
The Star, all Liberal, always and forever! The sheer sophistry of their article boggles the mind. I’ve heard that “liberalism is a mental disorder”,and have to wonder if being from Toronto isn’t a similar affliction.

  3. I’m a bit of an extremist on this, there is no point in the libertarian notion that wearing the costume in public is a matter of choice, where the matter of choice applied was back at the stage where we as a country chose to allow that sort of immigration — we were wrong to make that choice and now we will be dancing on pinheads trying to solve all the details one at a time.
For me it’s more a cultural than a religious question as it applies to immigration. But it is bound to be played out as a religious freedom question once let into Canada.
So while I applaud the move made by JK, the larger picture is that we should strongly discourage the cultural practice and make it clear we don’t want medieval Muslims in our society, period. Why would we? They should stay where they are and continue to screw up their countries, not come here to screw up ours.

  4. First let me point how just how absolutely racist the people are at the Star, by referring to all Muslim women as brown-skinned. Oh, I forgot that they cannot grasp that Islam is not a race. Then it is the usual upside down logic with them where hot is cold, up is down and freedom is oppression. But then again, what’s new?

  5. So how does the Left Star explain that their Left counterparts in France and Quebec want burquas banned outright? Not just for identification purposes in court, or swearing allegiance, but EVERYWHERE.
It demonstrates to me that the Star isn’t interested in Muslim rights — it’s just another excuse to unfairly bash conservatives. The atheists at the Star could care less about Muslim rights or anybody’s religious rights for that matter, otherwise they would stand up for religious rights in places like Quebec or France, where it goes far beyond basic identity requirements or legalities.
When was the last time a Star journalist had a word of prayer or gave recognition to a higher power such as God? The Toronto Star — newspaper of lying atheist pigs and infidels, pretending to respect Allah.

  6. The veil is not a religious requirement. It’s a cultural practice – and a recent one at that, as Islamic fundamentalism (which is a political not a religious movement)..increases.
But it’s not simply a matter of insisting that, if you want to be a Canadian citizen, that you must accept Canadian values – of openness to interaction with others, of gender equality, etc.
A lot of this is already covered in the new immigration rules and values set up by the govt in the last year, which emphasizes that new Canadians are coming to an existing cultural system with existing values and that Canada is not a hotel.
There’s another problem with the veil. A lot of citizenship ceremonies have been reporting numerous cases where, for example, four veiled women will take their citizenship oath – and then, they are seen to get into a car, driven by a man, with New York license plates. This has been observed on enough occasions to be of concern to immigration and security officials.
One has to even ask – is the veiled woman actually a woman? And – Could one veiled woman be constantly acting as a surrogate for numerous other women, currently living in such far-off countries as Pakistan, Yemen, Syria etc…and these other women, who have never been in Canada, now have Canadian passports, via this one and the same veiled surrogate?

  7. I fully expected to see a series of articles in The Star, Globe, CTV and CBC educating Canadians about the wrongness of their racist, intolerant attitudes towards face coverings. May I suggest A Little Mosque on the Prairies marathon over the holidays as a grand finale to the guilt trip.

  8. What can you expect from the Red Star…they are socialist and they are not in power in Ottawa..their brain gets addled when this occurs for a long time…//

  9. I got a weekend t.o. star subscription back in september.
only because it came with a free portable CD player.
I have already told them to discontinue it when the required time period is met.

  10. Just remember friends, if Iggy had won the last election we’d be doing The Star’s way. Which is insane.
We just missed having our country run by insane people. Again!
Ontario is -still- run by insane people.

  11. They should be banned everywhere in public.
In Canada, criminals cover their faces, not productive citizens.

  12. One thing that I noticed about the complete costume that I’ve never seen mentioned is that it completely takes away one’s ability to recognize a possible friend.
Up till about 6 months ago I worked daily in a housing project that was home to many muslims. There was four or five of the women that wore it all, only leaving the eyes exposed.
I maade a point of always greeting them, and only once did I receive a reply.
A few days later I found myself walking towards one of the ravens(my term)and had no idea if that was the one that said “good morning” back to me earlier.I gave a good morning. She did not respond.
The garments strip a woman of her identity. They render her as one of many, not an individual. They make it extremely difficult to engage in normal interaction with others.
The full costume is used to oppress and control women by men. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. There will be exceptions, but that is rare. To give one’s identity up to another is not healthy,to defend this is immoral.
The woman and children of islam suffer the most under this way of life,no ifs, ands,or buts about it.Islam is evil.

  13. Facial expressions play a big role in determining if someone is being truthful when they’re speaking in our culture. I refuse to interact with anyone who hides their face.
If people want to live in Canada then they must accept our cultural practices. If they can’t accept that then they can go back to where they came from.

  14. A snide piece just delivered on CBC. One, Mark Kelley used his intellect to inform us of what Minister Kenney had said he was for. Then followed a sanctimonious statemet put into Kenney’s mouth by this man.
Yes, says he, Kenney believes in freedom for women to do what they want. Kelley beamed at his own incredible juxtaposition. To do just what they want, he repeated.
Then comes his incredible riposte. NOW (The Minister) HE is forcing them to do something they DO NOT WANT to do. Disguard the Veil.
Then follows his spoof, using Santa Claus as an example of disguises. Not checking in as an arriving newcomer. More snide little ripostes using Santa and his status. Oh, Kelley must have strutted away
feeling like he was the cleverest man on the planet.
We are paying this man’s salary. Shame.

  15. Kelly’s comparison is invalid. We don’t see people in Santa costumes wandering about in public all year round.

  16. Just because something is a “religious practice” does not give people carte blanche to do it. Are we going to accept that Mexican Canadians can take people captive and cut their hearts out on the top of pyramids because it is a religious rite? To me freedom of religion means you can prey to any god you want. If that god then tells you to commit crimes you don’t get a free pass.

  17. ET, what is the procedure for citizenship? If a person in a niqab is there for the procedure do they get their citizenship papers and can now apply for a passport? At what stage, if any, do they have to show their face or do they just have to submit a picture for the passport?

  18. ET
Despite your misguided notion of a “Palestinian” people actually existing, you have, to my estimation, the veil/burka/identity thing pegged.
This sort of switching identities is common practice from many ME, central/south asian cultures….it is common practice.
Many Sihks, who appear to have imigrated decades back and have citizenship…..are actually just the latest holder of the ID….They basically come here to launder money…..they come, purchase a truck/business and after about 5 years return home for a holiday and then somebody else shows up….repeat. Photo-ID is not that effective…except in exceptional cases. The dead givaway is the guy who cannot shift gears in a car with a standard trany…when his licence/legend indicates a decades experience driving a rig…..
In my travels, back in the day, I had never encountered the “bee-keeper” rigs on women until I went to Afghanistan….still not in Indonesia but in Pakistan, I have heard this fashion is creeping into the North-west tribal areas….but not elsewhere.
    Iran with the Shah…no veils..western dress…..then….
Turkey until recently, head coverings were prohibited in universities and public buildings….since Kemal Ataturk’s reformation in the ’20’s..
Indeed for the most part, womens’ fashions and hem-lines in Egypt, during the ’60’s, matched those of North America or Europe….at the knee…..
I could quote the Haddith and the Sunna regarding modest dress but that has been done elsewhere.
I did the Haj and there were no veils or burkas….
    This veil/burka thing is just a recent fad….completely political…maybe slightly cultural/tribal but not religious…..

  19. dave – to my understanding, the application for citizenship requires a photo (and citizenship application is not also a passport application).
BUT – my point is that the citizenship application photo can be of someone living in, let’s say, Pakistan. But the person who shows up for the interview and also the ceremony and accepts the citizenship, since she is veiled, can be a surrogate, who shows up, answers questions etc, for numerous others who have never set foot in Canada. Who don’t speak the language..etc.
All the various data about ‘landing data’ and ‘residency for three years in Canada’ can all be, and is, faked.
Removing the veil means that the person who shows up and the applicant in the photo – have to be one and the same person.

  20. sasquatch- I agree with you about the recent use of the veil in Islamist countries, as the old tribes in power and the dictators try to retain power by repressing the population…and as the fundamentalists alienated from integration, try to set up little empires in western nations..
As for the Palestinians and having their own nation, I do NOT define the Palestinians as a ‘people’ – understanding ‘people’ to refer to a distinct ethnicity or even culture. I’ve rejected, constantly, any idea that our species can be divided up into distinct ethnic groups and that these groups have any fundamental right to having their own nation. I’ve said this repeatedly.
BUT – a population living in a geographic area, can decide to self-govern themselves (which is the definition of a nation); this is a political decision – and has to be put to a referendum of that population and possibly, of the population within the political domain of which they were a previous part. If this vote wins, then, I have no problem with that. History is flexible.
With regard to the Palestinians, they’ve been living for a generation, politically, as a separate system – not a nation, not a province, not a state, but, occupied. I have no problem with transforming this political status into that of a nation.
BUT – my view has always been that the Palestinians and Israel should form ONE federated state, made up of two self-governing federations, with separate powers for each over education, health care, etc..and a common economic infrastructure.

  21. I think some Canadians are finally waking up to the fact there so called betters are balmy, if not out right nutters. Particularly the Leftist Journalists who live in Never never land.

  22. I was chatting with someone who works in Kenney’s department. I gather he is like a folk hero with the front line staff. I wonder how many ministers have ever been able to say that?

  23. Have the apologists for these identity-destroying rags wear potato sacks on their heads under penalty of firing, torture or death. Why not join their Muslim sisters by wearing the veil in sign of solidarity?

  24. Somewhat comforting to see that even The Star’s readers are not agreeing with the article. Utter hogwash.
