Canada on Monday became the first country to announce it would withdraw from the Kyoto protocol on climate change, dealing a symbolic blow to the already troubled global treaty.
Environment Minister Peter Kent broke the news on his return from talks in Durban, where countries agreed to extend Kyoto for five years and hammer out a new deal forcing all big polluters for the first time to limit greenhouse gas emissions.
It’s about time that a Canadian government looked after Canadian interests.

We have a comprehensive plan for reducing Canada’s CO2. It’s called the National Electricity Policy. NEP will impose a high tariff on hydro-electricity exports to the US. It will become economical to transfer power to Alberta. To facilitate this, we will establish a government owned corporation, PowerCan (not to be confused with Power Corp, a private, evil corporation). Natural gas now used for power generation will be available for use by the oilsands. The completion of the power transfer grid will ensure employment and economic growth for Canadians.

I applaud the government’s decision to dump Kyoto. Chretien signed that deal for the sake of appearances. He never had any intention of implementing it. He knew it would be a job killer, just as you have said it would be if we ever tried to implement it. I am happy that Canada is at last being honest about this issue. Chretien and the Liberals made us hypocrites.
Please, do not get involved in any future treaties with respect to climate change. There is no proof that humans control climate. Until conclusive evidence is available, all efforts to exercise such control are colossal wastes of our tax dollars. Change is the one constant thing about climate. It is always getting warmer or cooler. All humans can do is adapt to whatever happens. We Canadians, occupying northern latitudes, have much more to fear from a colder climate than we do from a warmer one.

Regarding Kyoto polls, Evan Solomon looked visibly shocked at the Question of the Day poll on Power & Politics on Monday. Nearly half said it was good that Canada was withdrawing. That’s a higher percentage than voted conservative in the last federal election.
As to withdrawal, Kyoto needs to have 55% of total global CO2 emissions from Annex 1 countries as signatory to the treaty. Any less and the Protocol is invalidated. Just one more country has to drop out and the KP becomes invalid. This would render the “extension” they agreed at Durban last week utterly useless.
Sounds like a pool to me. Which Annex 1 country will be the next to follow Canada’s lead?

Evan Solomon was just excused for the day at CBC, after seeing the results of his poll he soiled his pants. He has been replaced with Dick Solomon, of earlier television fame, who is ten times smarter and extremely funny, something CBC is in dire need of in these dark days of no liberal leaders to publicly blow with airwaves of gushiness.
