Are the Republicans Already Self-Destructing?

I’ve long heard it conceded by conservative American political commentators that, while the Democrats may be the “Evil Party”, the Republicans are very likely the “Stupid Party”. They’re not referring to the rank & file supporters of either party but rather to those who run them.
Can’t say I’m very pleased to see the antics going on with the mainstream Republican candidates or with the fellow living out on his own private island.

  1. The GOP always air their dirty laundry in public. They fight like cats and dogs until a candidate is chosen and then steadfastly get behind him.
Call it “open democracy” or something.

  2. Robert,
Antics, for sure. I follow US politics and have for years. More exciting than the “ho hum” here.
“The new top dog is Gingrich, who can look entirely reasonable and impressive if you know nothing about his past.” (Kelly McParland)
Funny thought but, isn’t that what our American neighbours have now? Only difference is that one can find nothing or only hints but no records (a BIG Zero) of Obama’s past. It has been buried deep so as not to allow the purifying “light of day” to reveal and cleanse it. That is more scary than the thought of Newt being the Republican nominee. I personally think Newt’s the only one with a chance to beat the “Big 0”, considering the malaise that the GOP has been mired in for some time now. They appear to be almost “about to miss the boat”, again.

  3. Maybe they got lesson from Tim Hudack in Ontario.. The only politician I’ve ever seen who could blow a 30 point lead..

  4. james,
I disagree with neither you nor Coulter. Valid point. But then you’d end up with Milty as POTUS. I guess there’s no “Win-Win” in this one.

  5. I don’t think Romney is as wimpy as you’ve been lead to believe. He’s got a record of buying up poorly performing companies and turning them around. I wonder if there might be a country in need of something like that…

  6. I still think Cain , i know he is out …but i wish he would have stayed in , but now i am down to bachmann ,and gingrich, ron paul is a lunatic , perry and romney are RION’S santorum may do it though to o i like santorum and bach mann as well but right about now would be a great time for palin to come into the race ..she has been vetted for three solid years by the left there is nothing more to hide of destroy about her…she would wipe the floor with obmama….dunno……dunno what is going to happen all i know is that if obmam wins …it will literally be the whole entire , gun’s,ammo, gold, food stock, water, survival gear and medical supplies ..and a bunker in the middle of nowhere type of panic again …as he systematically continues to dismantle america from the bottom up or as micheal savage likes to say “TRICKLE UP POVERTY”.

  7. paul in calgary,
I was impressed with Cain, as well, until ‘they’ pulled a “Clarence Thomas” on him. I watched one debate and saw Gingrich/Cain ticket forming. I loved Cain’s line, when he had the last say, that hinted that Newt would be a good V/P for a Cain Presidency. The man can think on his feet!

  8. Glad for once I,m Not an American voter. One thing is clear though. Unless they get rid of Obama, America is finished as a Republic.

  9. 2 Words > Reeeeeee-laaaaaaax!
Either Romney or Newt will CRUSH Oblamebush and the Democrats in 2012.Obama is so far down in the polls (lower than even Carter was in the 3rd year of his disastrous presidency) that there’s NO NEED for Republican money/ads/’campaign’ to p!$$ away valuable money until much closer to the election date.
Quit expecting ANY national candidate in ANY country to EVER seem ‘normal’ or ‘likeable’ in the usual sense of the way we mere mortals use these words. Anybody who has chosen “national politics” for their career has disqualified themselves from “normal standards” due in large part to their outsized ego and narcicistic personality.
Newt vs. Oblamebush in debates would be AWESOMELY revealing of both their policies and personalities, and EXTREMELY entertaining as Newt beats the snot of of him 2 or 3 times for 2 or 3 hours each!
American conservatives don’t JUST want to win – they want to also CRUSH the American left for a generation or more. Newt’s presidential campaign would be full-nuclear, while Mitt’s would be all touchy-feely squishy liberal BS.

  10. ….and the truth of the matter is if the republicans don’t nominate Dr Paul then he will end up going third party, pull 25% of the vote from the GOP and the muslim usurper will win.
So do the right thing and run with the only guy who has a clue whats in the US Constitution.

  11. Garry @ 1:56
Right on that you point out how Obambam got a free pass fom the MSM while every GOP candidate gets tarred and feathered from square one.
Wish the GOP had time to pull itself together, but I’m one of those who thinks the US can’t stand another four years of Bareakdown at the helm.

  12. I see no antics. I see a vetting through debates and reviews of these candidates.
Remember that the MSM is no friend to the Republicans. The choice of the MSM will be a republican in name only and will be a reprisal of Mccain.
Romney, establishment choice thus far, has had very limited interviews time and yet had difficulty and frustration with softballs thrown at him by FOX. Wonder why the MSM likes him?
The Tea Party is a force and they will be the drivers in this coming election, not the RINOs/establishment. Where will the Tea Partiers throw their vote?

  13. The fact still remains that any one of those GOP candidates would make a much better President than the Annointed One who is there right now.

  14. FREE, plenty of GOP voters won’t vote for Paul, ever. And do you really want for president a man who’d destroy the Republic to save it by pulling a Perot?
(I like him on domestic policy. I know his supporters tend to be quite passionate, so I thought I’d mention that.)

  15. The Republicans aren’t self-destructing. They just have a much more open and interesting way of finding leaders. I understand it makes Canadians uncomfortable to hear all the back-and-forth but Americans still like to have coversations about stuff that matters to them… they still HAVE stuff that matters to them…

  16. I think people are perhaps over-rating the power of the POTUS. If the Republicans don’t win the Senate, they won’t get anything passed to any President for signature. If the Senate goes 2/3 Republican it could over-ride Presidential vetoes leaving Obama powerless, a fate he deserves worse than defeat.
The Republicans, a coalition of social and fiscal conservatives (independents) AND libertarians, can, if united, elect whomever they want for POTUS. If Ron Paul bolts to run as an independent or even if he concedes defeat in the Primary and supports no one, it’s any one’s guess as to who could defeat Obama. There’s no guarantee it would be Newt or Romney. Bachmann is a better conservative than either of them but is becoming a real long shot in the polls.
Given that a Ron Paul presidency would be subject to Congressional support just like any other POTUS, how many conservatives would be willing to go along with him as candidate given that without him Obama gets in? In other words, using essentially blind faith in plugging your noses to vote for Newt or Romney is equally if not more risky than plugging your noses and voting for Paul if the goal is getting rid of Obama. A self described conservative who wouldn’t support some one because they are too far to the “right” (and constrained by congress), and would rather stay home and/or vote for the Marxist is not much of a conservative!

  17. Coulter’s right about Romney. He’s the only one who can trick Liberals into voting for him.
I should point out that McCain lost because Republican voters are sick of voting for RINOs and stayed home.
    Romney is a RINO.
He wouldn’t reform Social Security, or Medicare or repeal Romney/Obamacare.
The beltway GOP says he is the most electable?
That’s exactly what they said about McCain.
What Ann Coulter leaves unsaid is that courting the Liberal vote in this cycle is totally unnecessary.
There has never been a time in my life more ripe than now for the GOP to select the most solidly Conservative candidate and stop pandering to the Left.
Independents, who make or break and election, are largely against Obama now and have buyer’s remorse BIG TIME for electing him in 2008.
Ron Paul is a RINO too, just of a different sort.
Everyone knows he’s a Libertarian running as a Republican.
Many of RP’s domestic policy positions are socially Liberal,(just not fiscally) and his foreign policy is literally insane.

  18. Personally I like how it is shaping up. The media is trying so hard to dig up any dirt at all. This really is to the eventual winners advantage as hopefully the media will have emptied themselves of ammunition.
I like OZs comment about Paul as a libertarian RINO. Very true!
John, the problem with powers of the president is that Obama has been trying to circumvent his constitutional limitations. The amount of damage that Obama can do remains quite staggering. Too, the Republican candidate has to be electable. What that means remains debatable.

  19. lwestin@3:36PM – You nailed it! Listening to such OPENLY frank public discussion of major issues is quite foreign to Canadian ears (I’m a dual citizen; can legally vote in both countries) – it’s as if Canadians were allowed to ever OPENLY debate “Do we really need or want official bilingualism any more?” and “Isn’t it time we dialed muslim immigration waaaay down?” or “It’s time to significantly reform Cdn healthcare” … Canadians are so used to being NOT allowed to openly engage in such discussions that when Americans openly debate their/our BIG issues it feels somewhat ‘shocking’ for Canadians to hear/see such things from public figures!

  20. Mamba,
Unless America gets it’s domestic spending under control the Republic is sunk. In truth it might already be too late.
That alone is enough to vote for Ron Paul.

  21. robins111: “Maybe they got lesson from Tim Hudack in Ontario.. The only politician I’ve ever seen who could blow a 30 point lead..”
Bad comparison. No Republican candidate has (or has ever had) a 30 point lead over Obama, not even “generic Republican.” The sorry fact is that Obama could become the first President to win re-election with 8%+ unemployment rate.
I’d emphasize “could” because — notwithstanding Robert’s curious faith in Kelly McParland’s assessment of the situation — the way the 2012 election will cut is completely unpredictable right now.

  22. the mainstream media in the US, Europs and to an extent, here, has decided that politics is the new reality show and that THEY have the only votes that count. The latest ‘gimmie’ generations, and sadly, many of the older ones, have the attention span of a mayfly and depend on 5 second soundbites and one-liners to tell them what the truth of the day is…selective reporting has crippled the news industry, turning it from a once proud bastion of truth and fairness into a highly biased, definitely left-leaning propaganda machine for terrorists and fools…mainly because that’s the only requirement for being a ‘journalist’ anymore…not writing skills, investigative ability or the dedication to an unwavering adherence to standards and ideals…but the ability to spin anything into the opposite of what it was..to coin foolishness like ‘truthiness’ and convince people who should know better that poorly written comedy fluff like ‘the daily show’ is a news program or that ‘the colbert report’ is an actual conservative line show…our once great Universities have failed us and become litle more than degree mills where the requirement for graduation is not challenging theories and developing and defending your own, but parroting the drivel put forth by ‘professors’ who only teach because they are unable to function in any other capacity since nobody outside of their classes believes their twaddle.

  23. Actually they are both stupid. Think for a minute how massively stupid the Dems really are. They were going to take the White House in 2008. They already had both houses of Congress with a veto proof majority in the Senate. They had Hillary Clinton ready to be the first woman President. Their media cheerleaders had destroyed Bush and they were ready to take control for at least 16 years. The Repubs had (and continue to have) a lackluster field of re-treads and marginal potential candidates. Just say President Michelle Bachmann or President Ron Paul without snickering. And the Dems blew all that to elect an arrogant, smooth talking snake oil salesman. Just because of the color of his skin.

  24. RINO’s = Progressives.
The Republican Party is lousy with the scum. That’s why Rush et al are trying to steer things conservatively.
Romney is too slick and Gingrich likens himself to Teddy Roosevelt? That’s the beginning of the Progressive movement in the US.
Tea Party candidates are the only thing to steer back to the right.

  25. Why on earth would anyone care about mcparland’s cliches about the republican nomination? That squish is salivating for a second obozo term.
It’s a nomination race: who cares if the elbows come up?

  26. Oz,
Thanx. Supports my (diplomatic) post above. I weas concerned thjat a Cain nominee would cancel the “racist card” but introduce another card…”who is BLACKER”…
Easier to eviscerate the racist lead…JMO.

  27. Anyone that thinks that any GOP voter is staying home so that Obama is re-elected is 100% delusional. The GOP could nominate a chicken and the GOP voter will be lining up at the polling stations.

  28. james,
A chicken? Hopefully… WELL…( as RR useed to preface his wisdoms…I’ll just leave it there….
I posted that Newt is my choice to defeat “THE ZERO”. Any doubters (with what’s on the plate?)…just check out Kate’s post above.
    I rest my case !!
Hope & Change be with you…

  29. Hey Robert. I posted a comment some 2+ hours ago.
Very mild and not in the least controversial.
Seems it was being held as I had posted a comment a short while before.
    Is it something I said?????

  30. to put it more succinctly…
the media has decided that they will decide who the Republican candidate is and by how much the democrat that pays them will win…sad, but true.

  31. Bemused…
    Not at all bemused…
related to Free are ya?? No…I know you’re not. Just cynicasl, eh? So am I…

  32. I can think of two good reasons not to opt for Romney. Reagan and Hudak. When Carter was president Reagan took him apart piece by piece by enunciating clear policies and objectives that were decidedly conservative. Carter lost that election. Hudak did not enunciate clear conservative policies and objectives and lost what everyone thought was a sure thing. As I said before why would any liberal vote for a faux liberal in waiting when you have a real liberal in power? If you want to beat a liberal don’t be a liberal.

  33. Revnant Dream has it right, another four years of Obama will destroy the republic.
Other than that, I just do not know anymore, as everyone I cheer for gets blown out of the water by the liberal media and Newt has baggage.
After our experience with CINOS such as Mulroney, I have no use for progressive Conservatives or progressive Republicans.

  34. Bemused at December 11, 2011 5:11 PM
A quick scan of your missive tells me you have written something worth reading, but I won’t bother reading your comments comprehensibly until you learn to use paragraph breaks and express the issues concisely/cohesively.
Just my conservative viewpoint, because proper form is fundamentally conservative and though I sometimes bend the rules myself, I do it with the licence I’ve earned by learning and following the rules of writing first.
I automatically scroll over glop that has no paragraph breaks because it is a hallmark of trolls.
(NO, I do not think you are a troll, but I do think you can be more considerate of your readers)

  35. Anyone that thinks that any GOP voter is staying home so that Obama is re-elected is 100% delusional. The GOP could nominate a chicken and the GOP voter will be lining up at the polling stations.
    ~james
james(who has not enough self respect to use a capital in his nic) does not understand that members of the Tea Party would stay home rather than vote for Mitt Romney who was the author of Obamacare and would never repeal it if he became POTUS.
In case you don’t know, james, Romney/Obamacare is a “bridge too far” not just in socialism, but economically as well for the U.S. which is fundamentally conservative.
Americans are totally fed up with GDP stealing TOP DOWN government, even if little ‘j’ james can’t comprehend it, they aren’t going to be stampeded through fear into voting for ‘Obama lite’ by the GOP elites if it only means postponing the day of reckoning by a few months or years because they KNOW that voting for the lesser evil is still voting for evil.
As President Lincoln himself said, “ You may fool all the people some of the time, you can even fool some of the people all of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all the time.”
Get some perspective and thereby the Tea Party vision.
It’s time that the death by a thousand communist cuts comes to an end and the Federal government overreach started by President Abraham Lincoln and fostered by the corrupted U.S. Supreme Court and endless socialist expansion enabled by Democrat fascist President Franklin D. Roosevelt is curbed, at least until the security of the Republic is once again viable.
My guess is that the stupid GOP beltway elites are going to select what they will call electable, but which the Tea Party will find unacceptable, and Sarah Palin may, as the most vetted potential Presidential candidate in the history of the Republic, run as an Independent after the GOP elites have selected their Saint Bernard( a large DOG/RINO) as a candidate and Sarah Palin will win the Conservative/Tea Party/Independent vote, shunning the GOP which has become estranged, hidebound, moribund, and elitist.
The Democrats had already won control of both the Congress and the Senate since 2006 and yet….and yet Conservatives still stayed home rather than vote for John McCain.
They knew…KNEW that they couldn’t fix a broken status quo by voting, once again, for the same broken status quo foisted upon them by the corrupt RNC.

  36. Ooh we’re already getting snide pissy comments about Ron Paul. Hey here’s an idea: putting a Gingrich or Romney as the GOP nom-both of these people will be as bad as Obama and maybe worse-is a bad idea politically because RP’s supporters can walk, especially if RP goes 3rd party. I don’t even like RP that much.
Lives on an island? The GOP is a piece of garbage. I’d stay on an island too if necessary to stay away from that.

  37. Doesn’t matter. Anyone is better than SCOAMF, including a bum snatched at random off some street corner, or Ron Paul. Anyone.
The country can handle incompetence. The country can handle corruption. The country can’t handle a corrupt incompetent with cronies like Holder and Napolitano.

  38. Ron Paul is the only hope for the US this cycle.
Newt is the US version of John Turner – a party hack, long past his due date, who will deliver a crushing defeat for his party. And since so many US races depend on turnout, the enormous apathy he’ll generate will guarantee many right-leaning independents and many GOP supporters will stay home, costing them House and Senate seats.
Those who say Paul’s social policies are nuts are whacked. Legalizing drugs? Anyone against that, PLEASE, go watch HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” from the beginning. Then go read Huxley’s “Brave New World” . Then watch “American Gangster”. Then.. oh, for pity’s sake, the list of object lessons goes on and on. Then ask yourself why, with thousands of personnel and billions of dollars worth of equipment in Afghaniland, the opium harvest continues apace. There’s only one answer: the demand is huge, the profits from prohibition are HUGE, and the corruption (yes, even in the US military) is sickening. Paul, who is a medical doctor, rightly says let’s address addiction as a medical problem, not a criminal one. (I doubt, however, that Paul is in favour of measures such as Insite, or handing out crack pipes to teens.) The current Prohibition is as ineffective and corrupting as the earlier one, and Paul is the only politician in the US with the stones to say so.
On foreign policy – what, exactly, has US foreign policy since 9/11 done to ENHANCE America’s position in the world? They are weaker now financially, militarily, and politically. The revolts against Arab leaders across the middle East are not in favour of Western democracy; without exception, they will result in more Islamic theocracies. The US has bankrupted itself with its ten years of guns and butter, eroded its own sense of self with the DHS/TSA/Patriot Act triumvirate of liberty destruction, and aroused contempt with its wanton acceptance of “collateral damage” from drone attacks. (Thought experiment for you skeptics: suppose the US had incontrovertible evidence that an Al-Queda operative was in Toronto with the makings of suitcase nuke, and they sent in a drone to kill him, which also took out 24 innocent Canadians – would you be OK with that?) Paul is the only candidate from either party willing to call “shenanigans” on an abysmally failing, useless foreign policy.
On financial matters, again, Paul is the only candidate on either side preaching 1) let’s go by the Constitution, and 2) what we’re doing is nuts. If you don’t like 1), then have the guts to say so, and CHANGE the Constitution, don’t subvert it. If you don’t agree with 2), then you’re too stupid for words, and shouldn’t be allowed into adult conversations.
A Ron Paul candidacy would energize vast amounts of America. People who are weary of politics as usual will see the opportunity for change. He is the only candidate from either party who will actually make a difference.
If America chooses anyone from the Newt/mitt/Bambam/whatever crowd of lookalikes, you can look forward to a collapse of the dollar, political destabilization (nothing’s more dangerous than a weakening bully), and economic collapse.
As they are fond of saying at another website, if that’s the case –
    GOLD, bitchez!

  39. ‘Ron Paul is the only hope for the US this cycle.’
With all as stated by KevinB @12:40, I agree.
Ron Paul believes in the American Constitution. He would be an excellent President. I would have voted for Ron Paul in 2008 and I would vote for him today. This intrepid man would help restore America and he would be a friend of Israel – with permission from Congress. Congress would be forced to act (eg DO something) under Ron Paul!
My second choice would be Rick Perry. Rick is suffering from a bad back and is probably taking pain killers which dull the senses and cloud the mind – could explain the memory burps. I would have forgotten that sotomeyer gals name too – she is someone I would be willing to forget.
