Frontier’s Joseph Quesnel will be on the nationally broadcast CBC Cross Country Checkup call in radio show hosted by Rex Murphy today (Sunday) live at around 5:20 pm EST. The topic will be the crisis at Attawapisk, a First Nation in Northern Ontario. He will be discussing his past research on the viability of some First Nations.

  4. Where is the money? Res income of 34m, 100 workers at D.B.’s. 350m in cont. work into the res.in six years. D.B.’s repair S.&W. and supply trailers for housing. Why is the hand that’s out always looking for more.? This res should be very rich.

Mike Holmes, Holmes on Homes, puts his 2 cents in and I quote,”Sure, mold-free drywall might cost 50 cents or $1 more per sheet than standard drywall, Holmes concedes, but will pay off in the long term, especially considering the number of homes on First Nations reserves that need renovation only a few years after being built.” Renovations only a few years later. WTF is up with that? Who in the hell do these First Nation people think they are that they get a free home and free Reno’s once they trash it. I as a taxpayer am fed up with this shit. No First Nation Person has a God given Right to demand that I pay for their well being. Shaun Alto, AFN Chief, and Morley Watson, FSIN Chief would not have a job today if there where no poor reserves. These people are profiting on Indian Misery. PM Harper needs to stand tall and end this f’n crap.

  7. I can’t help but wonder if some of the building material isn’t prone to mould . 15 years ago you never heard of mould , except maybe in bathroom walls behid the outer finishing . In Calgary last summer , all of a sudden there was a bunch of 5 or 6 year old homes with thousands of dollars of damage from mouldy drywall and other material . I just did a bunch of renovating in my 50 year old house and there was no sign of mould anywhere . Now i’m wondering if mould is going to stert in the new drywall.

    If a native person who knows what the problems are isn’t taken seriously, then how is the problem ever going to be fixed?
    What bones me is the fact that almost every reserve hosts these living conditions to some extent, and almost every reserve has a small population of people who know exactly what the problems are, but no media or government has the pair to vocalize on their behalf.
    I have some friends in Hobbema who work extremely hard from within the reserve to change things, but the culture is so entrenched in dependency and entitlements to ever fix.

As the spouse of a mine superintendant for a small gold mine in Man.that was ‘encouraged’ to hire/train men from nearby reserve..I KNOW from firsthand info what happens when mines hire from on-reserve.The majority of these hires have had to be random drug/alcohol tested,then sent home for a 2wk suspension,then month-long susp.for 2nd offence,then let go….then,few months later same offenders are rehired!They miss work frequently,and the excuses are worthy of a comedy routine.When my hubby had to fire a freq-offender,he was told by this guy,it was no big deal..he would just return to reserve and ‘get a cheque for doing nothing!’ These guys would take time off to hunt,to fish,as it’s ‘their right’.How do you staff a shift when dealing with all this? Also,if anyone on-reserve died,the whole bunch of them had to take time-off for ‘traditional wake’
    I will say,there were a few guys,that were tremendous miners,and were wanting to get ahead.Their mind-set was totally different than the rest of them,and that is the reason for the mess First Nations are in.The ‘you owe me’ as opposed to ‘I want to provide’

    The mold in Calgary has nothing to do with the product and all to do with inadequate construction practices. Roof’s without tar paper, grade issues, improper weeping tile installation, improper vapor barrier installation in and out, ect., ect.

  13. Knacker – yeah , you’re probably right . I’ve seen it here in Med Hat also .So if fly by nights can get away with shoddy work and cutting corners in Calgary ,and downtown Alberta , I imagine it can happen anywhere .
    One thing though , overcrowding in a house , especially in winter will bring the inside humidity way up and it doesn’t take long when that is a continual factor for rot and mould to start.
    As far as the whole reserve situation ? I’m not even going to pretend I know all the questions , never mind the answers . All I know is it’s got to change and it ain’t gonna be cheap .

    Way back in the eighties,I lived with a toolpush for a major oil company.His company put up a rig on native land in northern Alberta. The chief struck a deal with the company that they must employ some band members. All good.
    The company put a class together at roughneck school in Leduc.They all didn’t make it ,but that was to be expected. The ones that did, worked, and more were put into school.Meanwhile,a few were employed in the camps.
    Within a few months,my buddy was at wit’s end,because of the problems that you mentioned. He actually had people show up for work that were sent by the employee that didn’t want to work,as in ” My cousin trained me”.
    The company wanted to tear up the deal because the workers promised were not actually workers. The band said no,but a deal was struck. The company agreed to keep ‘ghost workers’ on the payroll.
    That is reality.

Just watched a couple of minutes of the NDP Leaders Grope, basically they would impose Reserve Policies on all of Canada… National housing, homes for everyone, all for non profit, cut all corporate tax breaks and force feed small business, everybody gets something for free in the New Reserve/Separatist NDP and a policy for freebies for the whole world. Revenue who needs revenue…

  17. I’ve dealt with a few bands, and the problem is a political one. Indian politics are nothing more than a tribal system, much like some middle east nations. The Chief may be democratically elected, but that’s the end of any semblance of democracy. When moneys come in, whether it’s oil revenue or welfare, the chief has total control over distribution. Many Chiefs are about as far removed, financially, from the people, as Ghadafi was from his subjects. As long as he spreads a little graff to the members of the council, they’re happy to let him take the cream off the top.
    When Senator Walter Twin was chief of the Sawridge Band, in Slave Lake, he used to fly his own plane to Vegas, to watch Mike Tyson fights. Yes, he made a lot of money for the band, but he put an unreasonable amount in his own pocket. He did very little for local organizations, but treated band funds as his own slush fund.

    Ain’t that the truth. Hobbema’s last council election was a great source of humor on Facebook for me. The postings by residents were all too true, and the all too truthful reasons for apathy that make the elections such a farce.

  24. Saw the teary-eyed Mothercorpse segment on the reserve – I hope he can explain who owned that $80,000.00 Cadillac Escalade parked in front of one of the “shacks” or maybe why the one family had no central heat but they had a 50″ plasma TV and a satellite feed? Things that make you go WTF!

  25. The mold is caused by the humidity from overcrowding and inadequate ventilation to control the excess moisture.
    Log houses are about the only form of construction that will withstand typical reserve occupancy.

    BTW,your OT post about the shootings happened in Breton. A good friend’s sister lives there. I just talked to him on the phone. He knew nothing about it,but he did tell me ,and I’m paraphrasing “It’s a sleepy little town of hippies and wingnuts”. He wasn’t surprised.

    But I can’t help wondering if they would readily accept hands-on help from outsiders as opposed to MORE MONEY (or maybe a combination of both)?

Notice they don’t see the blinding hypocrisy of having some leader whine about poverty and their people suffering whilst their luxury vehicle sits in the background. Personally I think this story is an NDP contrived issue to shore up their polling numbers? When I lived in NFL the Davis Inlet crisis unfolded and not once did the media ask a wailing parent why they didn’t go haul the bag full of gas fumes off their child’s head. Who lets an 11 year old wonder around in the dark with no parental supervision?

    Full reinforced concrete exterior walls to roofline encased in high density styrofoam (sacrificial) forms has been around for awhile now.
    Nice to work with…minimal prep work(no stripping of forms)…router in the wiring chases/boxes…strap the outside for siding…designed to take drywall on the inside…practically indestructable with NO mould problems, and cool in the summer.
    You’d have a hard time cutting thru this type of construction for a skidoo pad!

  32. The funny thing is that this obscure northern Indian tribe was probably not even discovered until the mid 20th century.
    The first Whiteman they ever encountered probably rode in on a snowmobile looking for a good place to set up an ice shack.
    Then it took a bunch of other southern Indian bands and Liberal twits who they wouldn’t know from Adam to tell them they are aggrieved and in need of a McMansion, two SUV’s and lots of whiskey money.

    I vote for old sea shipping containers. Cheap and tough. Plenty of people in Europe have used as renovations on vacation properties etcetera; some are pretty homey by white European standards, if someone cared to go that way and emulate those living standards.
    As a side note – I find it curiously hypocritical that the fanatical left would like to see the destruction of white European society, yet desperately want all those material trappings for native peoples around the world. They are in fact living the green dream already are they not?

  35. I listened to it, too. Close to the end some Mohawk guy came on and started spouting on and on about the Royal Proclamation and how it proves the land belongs to First Nations.
    The idiot has been thoroughly indoctrinated by The Industry. The Royal Proclamation of 1763 was issued by the British King and refers to Indian lands as “parts of Our dominion” (that’d be the royal “our”), in other words it refers to Indian lands as part of the British Empire, English possessions, in other words.
    The proclamation has been touted for years by the Indian Industry as a document that confirms Indian sovereignty. It refers to Indians as “nations” and as “tribes, but the Industry only sees the word “nations”.
    If you want to know where the phrase “First Nations” comes from, seek no further. Yet, the document itself was, as its name clearly implies, an edict issued by an all powerful foreign potentate claiming to own the land the Indians occupied.
    What a farce!!

  36. Minimise the amount of wood in the construction. No fibreglass insulation. Insulated Concrete Form system from the foundation to the top of the walls. Interior walls are built with metal studs. Exterior siding is concrete plank. Trusses are metal. Interior finish is a tough plastic which can easily be wiped. Floor is concrete with in floor electric heating.
    Triple glazed metal windows with easy to replace glass units. Solid core metal doors.
    These houses need to be built to last and meet the needs of the harsh environment, that includes harsh use.

    Admittedly climate and in most cases remoteness have a bearing on First Nations inhabitants.
    However the “right” to own , buy, sell or trade individual property is in my view a major barrier to native population poverty.
    Pride of ownership is a human value, long denied native Canadians.
    Communism is a block and yet communism is exactly what exists in the lives of First Nations in Canada.
    Have the courage to make the change!

  38. Yup, a quick Wiki search claims that:
    “Attawapiskat was entered into official treaty with Canada and the Province of Ontario relatively late, in 1930 (Treaty 9 adhesion), and the majority of the First Nation members moved to the community as late as the mid-1960’s”.
    It’s hard to get your head around why we individually or collectively owe these people anything. They live in an untouched part of Canada with all the leisure and rights to live as they have for 10,000 years. Yet somehow they self govern and are entitled to my money and my cultural benefits.

  39. Concrete is expensive, costly to ship, and requires specific skills.
    Materials for milled log walls are closer to communities, easier and cheaper to transport and can be assembled with minimum skills by community members.
    Log walls can absorb the excess moisture, and wick it to the exterior, insulated frame walls cannot. Neither can concrete or steel boxes.
    Houses built with milled log wall construction have lasted for decades across the Canadian north.

  42. Shitty construction with shoddy materials by outside contractors raking off windfall profits and kickbacks to politicians is the norm in native communities all over the North. There’s been huge amounts of graft and corruption throughout both native and white governments. Previous PMs were all from Quebec where this is part of the culture, so it’s easy to see how successive governments have turned a blind eye.

  44. Only limited numbers of contractors will work for Indian reserves. They typically bid 2 or 3 times what the job is worth and get as much as they can up front because there is a high probability that they will have to go to court for payment and that can have poor results. I have seen too many people hosed by reserves.

  45. Forty years ago in many places like that, real ambition was a quirk seemingly restricted to the chief’s family and close relatives.
    Ordinary residents ate TV dinners for a week after the welfare cheques hit the trading post, ate bannock and wildlife once
    the money was gone for another month. Now there are big flat screens for the mostly depressed, idle, or over crowded people.
    The diamond mine employs those hoping to better their lives and the rest are part of the passing parade of abuse, self abuse, vandalism, and criminality.
    The MSM has zeroed in on the superficially worst conditions without any depth to the reporting. Just another bash their political enemies sideshow.

    Here in the Alberta oilfield you’re forced to hire Indian contractors on Indian reserves unless technology supersedes capability. Huge trouble otherwise, the Chiefs and band leaders come around and check regularly.
    It seems fair enough, but a huge setback in scheduling and subsequent costs if & when they show up late or not at all. Actual job performance is a roll of the dice, and usually there is allot of overnight equipment damage and theft. As with any socialist bureaucracy, capitalist investment does the bull-work and pays the price.

  48. It will all come to a crashing end when whites no longer are the majority. I can see the looks on Muslim faces when these infidels come looking for a free hand out. They made no treaties, & Islam forbids them unless to gather strength, but only for 7 to 10 years at that.
    The Chines will laugh in their faces. East Indians will just tell them to find a job.
    Their free ride is only a generation away from collapsing.
    No one will be left that care about “natives” rights.
