1. Well – power in Canada is still concentrated in Toronto, and secondarily in Montreal and Quebec City.
   The point about MPs spending more and more time in Ottawa is a good one. I always wince when I read the usual media statements that MPs
   “haven’t done anything” in a given session. Good, I say. The demand for more and more legislation is one of the more subtle ways in which the
   Nanny State grows. Parliament should never feel guilty about a session in which they pass no legislation.
   Ottawa is indeed a curious bubble. One part of the city is made up of people from the Ottawa Valley, often whose families have lived there for many generations
   (as was true for my mother); or those of European descent, with immigration in the early 1900’s or after WWII;
   and then the politicians and senior civil servants. The two groups don’t mix much, and if anything the mixing is decreasing;
   although the French-English gap appears to be closing a little.
   Ottawa may be crazy but at least there is a tough, poor root under there. A bit like Newfoundland. Washington DC exists purely and simply for the government.

2. No real issue here.
   This virus ridden, and weakened country is starting to see the depth of the rot. Once this laboured heartbeat coming out of Fed headquarters comes to a complete stop we will watch as the corpse is torn to shreds. Just have to decide what portion you wish to be on and what direction you will go.

3. Hugh Segal would seem to be a master of saying nothing of any import, but at length.
   Maybe he’s still pretending that a Red Tory is not a socialist?

   Saves me the problem of deciding if I wanted to read Segal’s whole ‘book’.
   If that is a ‘highlight’ I wonder how Akin stayed awake reading it.
   Oh, wait…
   Akin is a part of that bubble.
