I think that what is most sad about this for me is the fact that I am not surprised in the least. It may just be me but the constant bombarding of our freedoms and the ongoing and unrelentless attempts at social engineering are wearing me out. Somehow the people who recognize logic and responsibility need to organize and fight back. The wingnuts are winning even though most of what they do only results in more problems down the road and then of course more illogical actions.
Maybe we just need to start turning established pubs and lounges into “Insite” sites. Seems we could do anything that way.
Oh well, I was thinking about giving up cigarettes for crack or heroine anyways…more socially acceptable and no sin taxes.

Grey sends smoking bylaw back

A proposal to ban smoking in local playgrounds and parks, on beaches, on patios where food or drink is sold and other outdoor areas is being sent back to the Grey Bruce Health Unit for reconsideration.
The resolution to expand smoking bans throughout Grey-Bruce, adopted by the board of health at a meeting in August, immediately ran into questions and concerns when it was brought before Grey Country council on Tuesday.
His deputy-mayor, Terry McKay, said the legion in Chatsworth “abided by the local bylaw” when it first outlawed smoking in the branch.
The ban “was going to bring in troves of people. It never did,” he said. “If anything, our membership has declined.”
The legion and others went to the expense of building a licensed patio and now they face the possibility of such facilities being closed.
Keep in mind the contributions legions make to the community when considering a bylaw to expand no-smoking areas, McKay said.
*IMO: our Legion went to alot of expense as the legion in Chatsworth to accomodate the smokers in out branch.
We installed a new door & built a fenced in patio at the side of our building, we even had the Smoking Inspectors make sure all was ok to their satisfaction, Unfortantly the day of inspection some members were on the new patio & they had moved some tables together, The Umbrella’s were touching & according to the Smoke Nazi’s that was a no no as it created a covered area So the smoke could not disperse properly, This outside on a patio Exposed on 3 sides. Now we get this here we go again, I can appreciate the Banning where children play But come-on are going to have police there in the parks 24-7. Common sense should be the rule.
What would you expect from a mayor who encouraged 100,000+ drunk hockey fans in to a very small area, and hoped they would all join hands in a rousing rendition of Kumbayah, then was surprised when things went all wrong. Gregor Robertson is,um, not smart. Vancouver has gone to hell in a hand basket. Where else in Canada would someone like Libby Davies keep on getting elected?
Reading the comments in Victoria’s paper makes me so glad I’ve left the left coast. The same people who seem to rant about getting a whiff of tobacco smoke outside are probably oblivious to cannabis smoke which is ubiquitous in that area.
Surprisingly, no-one has challenged moronic public health moonbats on the second hand smoke scam. The indoor literature is very flawed and applying it to outside situations is simply lunacy. I haven’t seen any studies which have done particulate analyses of outdoor air. What I suspect would be found would be primarily emissions from vehicles. One of the problematic sources is microscopic rubber particles from tires which can cause asthma in individuals with rubber allergy as well as fine carbon particles from diesel engines which cause lung damage.
If the city of Victoria was being logical, it would ban all vehicular traffic in the city and trucks could be unloaded at the city limits and goods carried into the city on rickshaws having wooden wheels. Rubber shoes would be banned as would any form of particulate producing combustion in the city, especially barbacues and smoke producing restaurants. If they wanted to attack primary sources of smoke particulates this would be the way. Cruise ships wouldn’t be allowed into the harbor and could use rowboats to bring passengers into the city from a few miles out at sea.
It’s just another tax grab. They’ll have the meter maids out looking for smokers and handing out tickets you watch. You know that it’s pretty much socially acceptable in Victoria to walk down the street mid day smoking a joint? Seriously no one says boo about it and it’s not rare at all. For a while there was an open air drug market beside city hall where anyone and everyone was asked if they wanted to buy some weed. They’ve since shut that down which shocked me.

Dropping my son off at the Departure Bay ferry bound for Vancouver, I noticed a bus passenger being scolded by the driver for lighting up a cigarette outside while on this scheduled stop. “You can’t smoke in this area!” the driver barked to the startled social pariah, who furtively shuffled off. As someone raised in a home with nicotine and book addicts, I felt bad for her.

Loki, exactly. A few years a go, when visiting our son in Chilliwack, we went to the Spaghetti Factory restaurant in the Hasting St. area and you could smell the cannabis smoke.

The ultimate aim has always been to make tobacco smoking illegal. Its okay for pot or anything else. The Smoking Nazis never stop . These are not rational people but fanatics.
