Ever been told you can’t fly a Canadian flag? Some Canadians have. The Conservatives think that’s wrong and are trying to introduce a law to prevent such anti-patriotism. Believe it or not, assorted members of the Liberals and NDP are siding with those who would stomp down on those Canadians who wish to display their nation’s flag. Kelly McParland explains all and then talks with Charles Adler about it.

It will be interesting to see how the newly minted 50+ NDP members in Quebec will vote on this bill.
Kids, don’t eat lead paint or you become whatever Phantom is now. For example, you will think ‘private property rights’ = ‘petty pointless legislation that will violate property rights’
Guess what Phantom? I hate Trudeau too, and I wasn’t even around during his reign. But you’re too much of a partisan idiot to even comprehend that I could have another motive. It should be noted that, as bad as he was, PET didn’t kill off property rights which were never constitutionally enshrined unfortunately. Indeed, he even kind of wanted them in the Charter but was shot down by the premiers, including Conservative ones. Have fun frothing!
The Phantom would appear to be The Lying Jackal after a half dozen cosmopolitans. His argument makes absolutely no sense – we don’t have defined property rights in Canada, so therefore we should have even fewer property rights so the government could force people to fly the Maple Leaf on their own property, should some third party see fit to force the issue?
Tell me Phantom, in which room do you hang your Great and Dear Leader portraits?
– libertariansaresmarter (6:47)
Do you *honestly* believe, libertariansaresmarter, that the law would grant everyone the right to fly the flag in someone else’s bar or restaurant, or someone else’s living room window, or lay it across someone else’s windshield?
From what I’ve heard about the law, yes. If someone above my apartment were to unfurl a flag down over my window, I think this law would prevent me or my landlord from getting rid of it. Is there any part of this law that contradicts what I’ve said.
Dudley Morris >
“..so therefore we should have even fewer property rights so the government could force people to fly the Maple Leaf on their own property”
A little out of touch with the topic Dudley?
No mention whatsoever by anyone about infringing on anyone else’s space, rights or freedoms (aside from “smarters” nonsensical comments). Not one mention about forcing any Canada haters to fly maple leaf flags anywhere, as there was no mention of forcing anyone to live in Canada either.
Have you noticed that unlike most other countries you don’t even need to clear customs on the way out? Just say’n…..
ANY SOB who comes on my property and tells me I can’t fly a CDN flag will not leave under their own power.
I truly believe it is time to start pushing shrinks to have PC’ness and leftardism legally declared mental illnesses, and put them all in little colonies waaaaayyy up north. But then, all the shrinks would be gone to! Sounds like a win-win to me.
Dudley Morris said (after stripping away all the insults): “His [Phantom’s] argument makes absolutely no sense – we don’t have defined property rights in Canada, so therefore we should have even fewer property rights so the government could force people to fly the Maple Leaf on their own property, should some third party see fit to force the issue?”
Dear Dudley, right now, today, YOU personally are exactly one Act of Parliament away from having a government mandated flag flying on your property. Or a hundred of them, at your expense. YOU personally are one Act of Parliament away from not having -any- property. I’m pretty sure they can take one of your kidneys if they want.
You did that to yourself. And you did it to me. And I don’t appreciate it one little bit, just by the way.
So the flag situation is the Government of Canada is trying to give you back one little personal right. The right to fly the flag no matter what anybody else says about it. Including the cops. On pain of jail.
You will have the 100% perfect right to fly the flag if you want. No matter who complains. No matter who threatens you. No matter how connected they are. No matter how many freaks try to sue you or tear it down by force. No matter if armed men threaten to shoot up the town of Caledonia like they tend to do around where I live. (Yeah, really.) Your right to take this one little action will be inalienable.
And -you- are complaining about it.
I feel no need to add any insult to that, it is sufficient condemnation all to itself.
Iberia asks: “Why is John Baird embarassed to have the Canada wordmark on his business cards?”
To p1ss you off, obviously. And apparently its working. Go John Baird!
Its not the law thats the problem. Its the liberal flag of eastern Canada thats the problem.
How many Canadians that have never been east of Superior in the fall have actually seen a red maple leaf?
This flag would have been much more inclusive if the leaf had been green and the borders blue.
OK, for the handful of folks here who just don’t get the point, I’ll try and keep this simple: say you own an apartment bulding. A tenant hangs a Canadian flag the size of a bedsheet over his balcony. You think it screws up the appearance of your building and ask him to take it down. Should you be fined or jailed for this? Yes or no? If yes, why?
You did that to yourself. And you did it to me. And I don’t appreciate it one little bit, just by the way.
Cripes you’re obtuse.
Dudley Morris >
“You think it screws up the appearance of your building and ask him to take it down. Should you be fined or jailed for this?”
Answer is no. There is no crime in asking someone to do anything outside of the Liberal politically correct mandates as with “sexual harassment”. For example you cannot legally ask a woman to lift her shirt in the workplace, or a Muslim to return to work during prayer or you will find yourself in front of a court.
The “flag crime” occurs when you physically take action against someone else’s property. In turn, they cannot PHYSICALLY infringe on your property. Your “appearance” argument is asinine; there are limitless aesthetically displeasing property issues between neighbours. The color of your house, landscaping choices, or the type of car you park on the street.
I can’t stand those little eco cars, do I have a right to force my neighbours to move them off the street and hide them?
The real fallacy of your argument lays in the “property” argument. In reality you are most probably insulted with the perceived political stand behind the flag. Had it been a Liberal Left government somehow granting the “right” you would most probably not have had an issue with it I’m guessing. That puts you right in there with aggrieved radical Muslim’s and others that wish to restrict Canadians viewpoints & free speech through endless kangaroo courts like the CHRC.
Dudley Morris (11:39 AM) has encapsulated the problem. Either we’re in favor of property rights or we’re against them
Moreover (and it makes me sick to the stomach to say this) Bob Rae is right. If the Government of Canada has nothing more important than this to incite it to pass another law, perhaps the MPs should just give themselves another three months holiday and shamble back to their ridings.
Knight99 said: “I can’t stand those little eco cars, do I have a right to force my neighbours to move them off the street and hide them?”
No, you can’t. But they can and will tell you to move that gas-sucking RV in your driveway, because its blocking their view. Or get that 1947 Ford off your property because its an eyesore.
Currently you CAN be told to remove the Canadian flag from -your- property if just one freak complains. Because YOU have no rights.
But -I- am obtuse, see?
Zog said: “If the Government of Canada has nothing more important than this to incite it to pass another law…”
Dude, a man has been struck to the ground by police, illegally arrested and illegally held for 48 hours over this. Armed men have been allowed to do whatever the hell they want to whomever they please over this. Caledonia. Look it up.
Returning the right to hang up a piece of cloth to the people of Canada has all the best Liberals and NDPee-ers up in arms and frothing at the mouth all over the place, in the middle of an international economic crisis. We could go broke, and the “Loyal” Opposition is freaking out over a law that says you’re -allowed- to fly the flag?
This law is a work of -genius-.
Zog >
“If the Government of Canada has nothing more important than this to incite it to pass another law…,”
Obviously it is a protection law for Canadians who wish to exercise their right to free & public speech, in this case proudly stating it via a national symbol placed on their property identifying that they are proud to be Canadian. No one said you or they have too. Their right to display a national symbol will not trump someone else’s right to their personal property space.
You are correct about “more important” things though. Harper needs to get on scraping the 2 Billion dollar Liberal gun registry. There are still over 200 million unaccounted dollars missing from the Liberals reign of terror prior to being tarred, feathered, and run out of town by the majority of Canadians. Now we are talking about serious Property Rights and the protection of Freedoms & Liberties, symbolism takes a back seat.
*Note to all the Canada Haters, you can take solace in the thought that if Canada should ever fall to full totalitarian rule, including Islam or progressive socialism, finding and routing out those patriotic Canadians will be just a little bit easier. Just follow the flags and hang them high from the poles.
“Privare [sic] property is at the mercy of the crown [sic].”
That’s Crown with a capital C, my friend.
And don’t you forget it.
Heh heh.
condominimum land owner when they built condo for sale I know there is big list of
Do and Do not put force to condo owner to sign
and
he as owner of land and builder is the boss
and he is one who forc codo fees increasly by his will yearly
even so many commerical and industrial do not even allow to put too much your company brand or marketing or ads outside of your condo business too and get it limited in their contract and sign
then blame it to business and home or codo lawyers here
therefore if some one ban to hang flag from condo
because original condo signature ban them to hang any or sometimes ban them to do barbecue
this is more like condo land owner and condo apartment like landlord and tenent argumenet and their contract is.
condo owner may only own the air not land in share but I think
in future
codo owner need to shared share in land too but because so many people live under one big top roof land owner condo like to control them to reduce conflict I guess
did anybody see that law that ban them for put flag can copy of that law or reference to that?
because this is weird
some apartment has more freedom to condo owner for christmas lamp and design too
in some day can put flag get allowed and remaining days can put inside home.
at the end of day:
If some one put flag outside of home
It does not mean they like Canada more than others.
You can not force people to like all culture or obey it because of minister of culture boose this subject up
again like all Canadian culture is private issue so many do not like to talk about it with others too.
may be over Canada flag between french and English has argument that is why some people do not like to involve with it in controversay attached to it in histroy of two groups maybe
replace gun registry cost to buy falg making cost all still is cost in different ways of spending
I think differnce between two group one look like saving money but spend it in war zone more or less
I saw too many farms that their land registered espcially near 401 highway east that
siad this land orginally appendix A belong to crown and queen
even if you buy it
if road like to expand we do not give you any money or you can not complain
or after century of 80 years of buy or sell so many right reserve for queen and crown
I saw that registry is kind of weired
it means like you pay for it still
queen and crown has hand on so many big acres farm land
as appendix A attached to it.
if any water damage came they are not responsible for it I ask so many people they do not know
\who make this appendix A and
how to get rid of it!!!
so many false title owner land farm in Canada seen too unfortuantly and strange people live in 401 east too sorry be frankly
If title sold has wrong then crown can made who can own the land perhaps!!

“When will Harper make the trains run on time?”
Good question! If we continue to keep our immigration doors wide open to the Third World it won’t be just the trains running like crap.
California still doesn’t grasp the concept, even while the state slowly spirals into ghetto Mexico outside the walls of Hollywood’s liberal elites gated communities.
When will ulianov realize that having the government take your car so you have to ride the train is not a good thing?
And when will he realize that -giving back- a right previously stolen is not fascism?
Go trolls, keep proving the Phantom’s point!
If we continue to keep our immigration doors wide open to the Third World it won’t be just the trains running like crap.

Bingo, that’s why we keep the ulianov’s and ilk back on track (pardon the pun).
When will Harper make the trains run on time?

They’re running just fine on diesel and electricity.
1. The red and white colours are based on the official Canadian Heraldic Patent signed off c.1923 by King George V.
2. The flag’s pattern of red-white-red is taken from the flag of the Royal Military College of Canada, which has been in service since 1876.
3. The pattern of the Maple Leaf is simplified from the Maple Leaf badge pattern used by most of the battalions in the Canadian Corps in 1WW.
4. The Maple Leaf, in black, was applied to the funnels of HMC Ships beginning c.1915.
5. The single Maple Leaf, in red, has been in the RCAF roundel since c.1925.
