Both, curiously, have Canadian connections.

When I read the comments in the NY Times after the article about committees, it was quite apparent the many articulate, long articles represented the “committee class” of responders.
When I had to register for the first time with the NY Times commenting group and returned to the article comments were closed.
With your indulgence this is what my comment would be; President “Silent Cal” from the twenties seems to have taken the correct approach in a financial crisis.
This of course does not fit with the many articulate responses here,(NY Times)which take several sentences to say a few words.
My apologies for this long comment; Cheers;
… and the conclusions of the “liberal” commenters is, in that case, the president is doing a good job but … Bush is still responsible. Uh huh.
– – Which all goes to show if you are a reasoned and politically stable individual not prone to follow the utopian flights of fancy and authoritarianism sewn by the hard left, you must leave Canada to have your voice heard above the din of lockstep media cheerleaders or the political speech censors.
Canada, at this point, is doomed to fall into the abyss of global centralized authority and collectivist forced austerity which is the destination/end game of any nation infected with self destructive hard left utopianism. My God even our Tory party acts like green party thugs and robbers.
If there ever is to be a social revolution to free us of hard left dogmatism/despotism, it will have to come from the grass roots, lead by the very conservatives who seek refuge for free speech outside Kanada.
I always thought the Reform partys super RRSP where the individual could manage their own investments for old age was a good idea.
That or Insurance company’s route, where you pay a certain amount a month for a pension.
Franky how could theybe worse than Governments using pension monies for general revenue.
Charles Krauthammer has always been a favorite with me. I don’t always agree but he sems to have a differenr way of seeing things that are interesting. I can attest to his humanity. He’s & a few others are the onlyones who ever wrote back when I send an e-Mail about a piece they wrote. Fine man, & very polite.
I believe he’s a bit naive when it comes to Islam but like the rest of us is learning.
Not suprised at a Canadian connection. Half of Canada, including Empire Loyalists are American decended.
I hope it does not hurt him though. Mark Styen another guy I admire is coming under assult in the States even over his accent of all things.
The Obamites are in full rage.

I like Krauthammer 95% of the time, but he tends to revert back to his “left of Center Days” occassionaly.
@ Revnant Dream – “Half of Canada, including Empire Loyalists are American decended.”
You can count me in as one of those, and I am just as proud that I am an American Citizen now (actually 30 yrs ago) and couldn’t be happier!
David Brooks has come half way from his leftist days. He is a Red Tory.
I much prefer Charles Krauthammer.
I knew there was something civilised about Krauthammer! 🙂
But seriously, his article makes me think of the things that constantly stand out for me when I read things like social security, retirement, ect. What are we handing down to our kids? We’ve nearly exhausted the benefits. Even if we acted today, would it be enough?

I was told a couple of years ago by a descendant of the original settlers on a small island near here that over 40% of the population there now are American-born. Americans fit in well in rural BC; the values are about the same.
And, according to the biogs, both are Jewish.

Aye. Give me a conservative over a Conservative any day….
Krauthammer was wrong about only one thing. Bismarck was not being arbitrary when he picked the age of entitlement. It was deliberately chosen to be after the average age of mortality. There was nothing coincidental about it; population statistics and national mortality rates in the 19th C were more than good enough to do this.
