We Don’t Need No Stinking Giant Mirrors

From Ed Morrissey:

Breaking: FBI raids Solyndra

And coincidentally… [the] company made a lot of visits to the White House over a two-year period while getting the taxpayer subsidies, too…

  1. woo. Looks like embarrassing Obama is dangerous. Taking $500 million in Federal funds and then going bankrupt, no problem. These things happen.
Making Barry look bad… now that’s a problem. Call the FBI shake-and-break squad.

  2. Yesterday a caller to Mark Levin’s show provided a lot of inside insight into what happened at Solyndra. I suspect that a whole lot of fraud went on here, between the Obama administration and close pal of theirs, George Kaiser. But as long as Eric Holder is in place, there’s no chance of a legitimate investigation occurring.

  3. Curious to find out how much of the $500 million has made it into Obummers re-election fund.

  4. Now that the FBI has entered the picture, Rep Issa can no longer call a congressional inquiry.
    Hmmm

  5. Comments on a few other blogs suggested that the FBI +DoE are simply the cleanup crews….remove, store or thread. I tend to go along with this meme.

  6. Seems to resemble the now well worn GM script by now.
Those on the crony capitalist fast track borrow huge amounts of govt money,
fill factories with state of the art machinery, and then promptly declare bankruptcy.
Do a reorg and get back to business with a much reduced debt load and an even
bigger begging bowl stuck out for still more money.

  7. You’re missing the point [again], the problem isn’t solar technology. It’s simply not economically feasible to produce PV solar in North America. The labor costs here are prohibitively expensive and environmental regulations which keep our air, water and land from being heavily polluted don’t exist in Asia, so nearly all of the PV production is over there where they can pollute and keep their production costs low. The electricity to run their PV solar factories comes from dirty coal and the factories dump pollution into the environment. The same goes for their wind turbines.
Stop knocking alternative energy, you’re missing the forest for the trees. The problem is all government subsidies and lack of prudent fiscal management.
A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. 8. The point would be ….. that after how many months of criticism based on experience and reality ….. the US Justice department is looking into this scam ….. NOW?

  9. North of 60, all around this part of the province there’s farmers with -big-, -expensive-, solar arrays out behind the barn. These things cost upwards of $200K, many situations I see the solar array cost more than the house they’re beside. Like, ‘way more.
These arrays, because of the installed cost, will -never- pay off even at the inflated rates we pay for electricity out here in the Not-Toronto sticks. They can’t even run the farm off the damn solar array because there’s no storage facility. Lead acid batteries to store 200 amps x 24 hours worth of electricity cost cubic yards of dollars.
Ontario government promised to pay these solar “pioneers” $0.80 per kwh, and many were built. Then somebody twigged a gray cell that the government couldn’t possibly pay for that, so they dropped it to $0.50/kwh. At that price the building has stopped, but the owners of existing units would break even in ten years or so. Maybe.
But then somebody twigged another gray cell, and figured out the province can’t even pay for having all these systems hooked up. Rural lines are TOO SMALL. They will -melt- the lines every time the sun comes out. Transformers will go on fire. Daily. Breakers will blow and black out whole grid sections. Daily.
So now all those guys are -screwed-.
Solar tech is suitable for remote locations off grid, and small-load appliances like road signs. Not to generate power for the grid.

  10. Too bad it wasn’t publicly traded. Short-selling solar companies is like printing your own money.

  11. Taxed…@ 4:18 “Curious to find out how much of the $500 million has made it into Obummers re-election fund.”
But that’s a kickback TEA, and and I’m sure there’s no illegal or shady dealings going on herre.
    Move along now.

  12. Phantom’s solar example proves my point perfectly, thanks.
The technology worked perfectly. When the sun was shining electricity was generated. What the story proves is that government meddling and subsidies can screw almost anything up. Nothing new there.
Then there are examples in Alberta where people have invested their own money in grid connected rooftop solar arrays without government meddling. Over a year they generate more electricity than they use. They’re quite happy with the arrangement.
Appropriate application of technology is important. A violin makes a poor hammer.

  13. What most are unaware of with these emotional arguments and heresay anecdotes…is that PV cannot in optimum locations (none in Canada) cannot, produce enough energy to replace the energy used to manufacture, ship and assemble during the mean time before failure.
The current nonsense is that “small wind generators” provide a return of the investment while the big “stinkin’ fans” never can…
Funny thing is that I have noticed the early inovators 5-10 years back have allowed their wind-mills to become derelict and have not beenrepaired nor replaced …small versions of the wind-mill graveyards in Californica’s Altamount Pass..
Solar panels installed during Carter’s time on the WH were removed during the Clinton period and OBOZO has not had them reinstalled…because they simply cost more than the return….didn’t work.
Wind mills and solar panels are a passing fad……pet rocks……

  14. Can you say Sponsorship? Wait and see what the donations history looks like.
    A story to watch.
