  1. I’ll trade you two Englishmen for four…

More than a million of the highest-qualified and best-trained Britons have gone to live abroad and are contributing to the wealth of other countries, a report found yesterday.

They have made up more than half of the British emigrants who have gone abroad over the past 14 years to work in countries including America, Australia, or, increasingly, Germany, it found.

The report from the immigration think tank MigrationWatch warned of a new brain drain and said that no other country loses as many university graduates through emigration.

It’s an exchange program of sorts:

But at the same time British immigration rules are offering entry clearance to the country to engineers and other highly qualified technicians because the country is suffering from shortages…

  2. “Wage rage.
I like that phrase, coined by the newsroom at Radio NL in Kamloops, to lead their story on yesterday’s BC Government release of public sector salaries.
You know things are completely out of whack when you read a report like this, see someone making a quarter million tax dollars for pushing paper and managing people, and you almost think to yourself: “Hey, that’s not a bad deal.” Uh, yes it is.”

  5. Government Sues Biggest U.S. Banks Over Mortgage-Backed Investments
    EXTRACT
-“the U.S. government on Friday sued 17 financial firms, including the largest U.S. banks, for selling Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac billions of dollars worth of mortgage-backed securities that turned toxic when the housing market collapsed.”-
    http://tinyurl.com/3pqlzh5
    This is a big deal.
In essence it is the Obama government and the Democrats attempting to hang the housing bubble on the banks(capitalism), and flee from the responsibility of regulating it into existence with the CRA on the basis of race.
This will either be like a Soviet show trial or a half-naked attempt to extort some of the $Billions-in -taxes the U.S. government used to bail the banks out and use it to grease the Democrat election bid.
The optics are…millions of Americans are mad at the banksters from foreclosing on them and theirs, and the Dems are using the banks as a whipping boy, which will be popular on both sides of the aisle.
Man… if I think I’ve seen the Liberals go lower than a snakes rectum and they can’t get any lower, it`s always my own sense of morality that limits my imagination.

  6. Oz @ 1:05 a.m.: I posted a link to that last night, but it got lost in the filter and never showed up. I agree with you, it’s a very big deal.
This could well be a big part of the way the “community organizers” planned to destroy a country.

  7. Here’s a great post from WUWT by “Ken Harvey”:
I can see the problem that the warmist scientists have. They have spent years, half of a working lifetime some of them, promulgating a sort of pseudo-theory. Whether they are there for the money, the prestige, simple belief, or all three, they are now painted into a corner. Their pseudo-theory is crumbling away, day by day. It must be difficult, to say the least, for a man who claims the appellation “scientist” (as it would be indeed for any of us) to acknowledge that he has spent much of his working life promoting a major intellectual error.
That their thinking early on was in error is, of itself, no disgrace. The disgrace lies in the fact that they produced no hypothesis that could be falsified. They are painted into a corner because of not what they did, but because of what they failed to do. When is man to come to appreciate that a computer is no more than a super fast version of the Facit calculating machine which I used for currency conversions back at the beginning of the ‘fifties. Correct answers come automatically, but only if you put in the right numbers. What a pity it is that we don’t know all the “right numbers”, but in the meantime collectively we can spot numbers in there that give us pause.

  9. Article in Macleans: Why your teenager can’t use a hammer.

Wow, in the last 2 locations I’ve lived in neighbouring husbands couldn’t drive in a 3 penny nail without 10+ strokes.
Before I was their age I could fence in a thoroughbread exercise coral driving 6 ” spiral spikes with 2 strokes, one to set them and one to drive them home.
Was at an M&M Meats(not a patron) fronted funding drive for teens in acting arts in Airdrie Alberta buying some burgers.
Two teenage girls about 14-15 yrs old(we bought 4 burgers from them at a total of $10.50) and I gave them a twenty +.50 cent change and we argued with them for several minutes over the obvious simplicity of getting a ten back.
The girls finally gave in and we got the ten, but they muttered that the next time they should bring a calculator1!!?
I wonder if we can start a new fad by introducing the abacas as a cool new thing?

“Voracious mining has hollowed out vast tracts of the north of China, leaving three million people living on ground that could collapse at any moment.”
“To keep its glittering skylines alight, China now uses more coal than the United States, Europe and Japan combined.
In the dust-blown mountains of China’s coal belt, locals have lived for years with choking clouds of soot and the continual roar of mines that never sleep, digging for 24 hours a day. Now they face being buried alive as China tries to extract every last nugget of coal from beneath them.
Shanxi Huang Jia Po is a village on the edge. For centuries, 500 farmers have lived here, carving stepped fields into the side of their mountain and planting corn, marrows and aubergines in the fertile yellow soil that covers Shanxi province.
But the children of the farmers will have to live somewhere else, because it is only a matter of time before the village falls into the honeycomb of mining tunnels below. Standing in his courtyard, Lu Linhu points to a 30ft deep hole that has opened up in the cement outside his front door. Behind him, wide cracks have appeared in the walls and ceiling of his bedroom. The 38-year-old Mr Lu, like many other villagers, has used gaudy posters to cover the holes and ease his state of mind.
“We cannot really sleep properly any more,” he said. “At night, we can feel the shaking of the ground when they use dynamite in the mine. And when it rains, the water comes flooding in through the cracks.”

In Obama, we have a president more grounded and comfortable in his own skin than many of the people he has to work with to govern this country. He’s bigger than most of us. So the petty slights that get a lot of us riled up probably don’t register to him. He’s a thinker and plotter with his eyes on the prize down the road, not the daily hysteria taking place on the road to get there. That’s why I’m praying that when the real fight comes, the president will show Republicans — and the American people — that he’s not the pushover they believe him to be.”

“Canadian PM becomes latest world leader to visit Libya
    Updated: 2004-12-20 09:44
Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin became the latest in a parade of world leaders to meet Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi as the once pariah nation cements its emergence from diplomatic isolation.
Martin was expected to use his two-day visit to push for a liberalisation of Libya’s economy, political system and human rights policies and to make a strong pitch for Canadian business as the Libyan economy opens.
Speaking to reporters following talks with Kadhafi, Martin announced that a Canadian engineering group, SNC-Lavalin, had signed a one-billion-dollar (750-million-euro) contract to carry out one of the final phases of a vast irrigation project.”

The process of reconstruction, of rising from the ashes, of overcoming the trauma of having been deceived, exploited and manipulated – is drawn-out.
