Now is the time at SDA when we juxtapose!
United Press International, Aug.24th – USGS ups Marcellus Shale reserve estimate
New York Times, Aug.25th – Geologists Sharply Cut Estimate of Shale Gas
h/t Don B. who asks “Are the reserves up to 84 trillion or down to 84 trillion? It depends on whether or not you hate fossil fuels.”

NYT: Ugh! those UPI types are probably even Tea Party members!
New York Times = Ministry of truth
I’m only surprised the NYT didn’t convert the numbers to cubic meters of gas to make it seem even smaller.
Here a trillion, there a trillion. Ask Obama. It’s just a number.
at 5$ an mcf ,there isnt enough gas to pay the debt
I wonder how long it took the NYT to find the guestimate from the Potential Gas Committee to make this a downer of a story?
Uh, oh. Trouble at the White House.
Michelle is spending way too much taxpayers money on her vacations. Apparently, Barack is not amused.

Probably the first estimate is BOP (Before Obama Bolitics) and
the second is AOP (After Obama Politics).
Second paragraph of the USGS release that the Times links to:
“These gas estimates are significantly more than the last USGS assessment of the Marcellus Shale in the Appalachian Basin in 2002…”
The 410 tcf, is an estimate from the Energy Information Administration.
“We consider the U.S.G.S. to be the experts in this matter,” said Philip Budzik, an operations research analyst with the Energy Information Administration…..“They’re geologists; we’re not. We’re going to be taking this number and using it in our model.”
The Times headline is misleading.
“Geologists Sharply Cut Estimate of Shale Gas”
The Geologists increased their estimate.
This is not a story about the Marcellus gas reserve estimates, but rather about the Energy Information Administration and why they are publishing estimates that are not created by the experts.

Excellant summary and conclusion.
This is just another rearguard action by the evil lefties (and they are evil)to protect their progress at deconstructing industrialized society, especially the US, which is their biggest impediment to achieving global/UN government with them in charge.
The Marcellus formation exceeds, due to location, the impact of the Bakken, Barnett formations’ and the Canadian Oil Sands’ ability to provide secure, abundant, cheap energy to fuel the US economy.
Hence the desperate, hopefully futile, BDS/PDS like push to discredit fraking and to promote unreliable/expensive solar/wind energy.
Timing and location are everything. This amounts to the restoration of the early Pennsylvania oil fields/coal fields slap under the prodigious energy market that is the industrialized, high density US North East/Mid West. This could possibly even polish the rust off the rust belt.
This not only is a shot in the arm of the US economy but transforms global politics by diminshing the influence of the ME energy fields….even lessens the significance of Alaska Northern Slope energy. Imagine the benefit of locally obtained secure, abundant, cheap energy with out the need, expense, or risk of shipping hydorcarbons from halfway around the world.
Very Early in WW2, the US failed to recognize the strategic importance of Carribean and East coast shipping….unlike the Kreigsmarine and the RCN who made this an early priority. Donitz’ U-boats later referred to this period as “the happy time”.
East coast(Canada and US) petroleum inventorys were critically low…there was the ignominity of US tankers slipping out to join RCN escorted convoys…..Canadian escorts only made available by temporaliy suspending RCN patrols/shipping in the Gulf of St Lawrence and Lower St Lawrence.
Gradually US Admiral King relented and ended his opposition to convoying, escort and antisubmarine air patrol.
Belatantly internal pipelines were a construction priority and hastily assembled tanker trains were instituted to supply Texas/Gulf oil to the US NE and eastern Canada.
In a desperate reverse of Lend Lease, Canadian constructed “Flower Class” corvettes were transferred to the USN and USCG to escort those critical convoys. Diversion of, British ordered, Lockheed Hudsons to the USN and USAAF for anti-submarine patrol. This, in turn, allowed a resumption of anti-submarine patrols/shipping in the Gulf and Lower River…U-boats had been frequently sighted even a far up as near Quebec city.
In a momment of revisionist history, consider the implications if the Marcellous had been exploitable during those desperate times of the early ’40’s.
As far a CO2….that has for the most part been debunked as environmentally benigh and to just make the grass grow greener and the corn to grow taller.
The left wants to get the economically recoverable reserves down to 0: this bonanza will kill off the left’s propaganda campaign.
Obama has received his marching orders on shale gas, and he will do his masters’ bidding. The SEC ( yes! ) is investigating the fracking industry, with the goal to uncover securities fraud, no doubt. They want to paint these firms as polluters, with attendant, huge, contingent liabilities that must be reported on their balance sheets, driving them out of the business.
The conflict is between the prior estimates of the USGS and the EIA.
SEC as a political tool of the left?
et…
Ironic…
And yet …. Al Gore Chicago Climate EX fraud got a pass … while US resource developers are getting cornholed.
