  1. But, but, we’ve only controlled the congress for five years, and the white house for uh, just about three…can’t be our fault!

    Wretchard:
“What I like about Ariana Huffington is that she is the purest example of an opportunist extant, and I admire her for that. She unfailingly hitches her wagon to what she thinks is the fastest rising star and will unhook from it at the slightest sign of faltering. When it was cool to be conservative she was a ‘conservative’. When she sensed the rise of Obama, her admiration for him knew no bounds.
Watching her shove the knife into Obama in the video above conveys more information than a thousand columns by Peggy Noonan. Like some kind of vulture Ariana has an unfailing nose for dying things. Watching her perched over President Obama’s political carcass, just waiting for it to stop twitching fills me with a kind of awe — awe at her ruthlessness and not a little sympathy for the occupant in the White House. Here’s a lady who’s not afraid to put her best interests first. And whatever you say, that’s some gal, though one you’d best avoid.”

“Hearing Prime Minister Stephen Harper refer to the interim NDP leader Nycole Turmel’s past ties with the Bloc makes me wonder whether we shouldn’t examine more closely Harper’s past.”
Yeah, because the Canadian media have been so easy on Stephen Harper all these years. I’m sure the CBC overlooked his membership in the Aryan Brotherhood.

“The eurozone is at “serious risk” of collapse and is lacking in political leadership as the debt crisis threatens to plunge Europe and the global economy into a recession.”
“Romano Prodi, the former president of the European Commission, said the eurozone had a “problem of power” and that it was unclear who was in charge.
His comments came as one of Europe’s senior economists warned that, without a co-ordinated response, the eurozone could “break into its constituent parts”.”

    “*I. NAMING OF PARTS
To-day we have naming of parts. Yesterday,
We had daily cleaning. And to-morrow morning,
We shall have what to do after firing. But to-day,
To-day we have naming of parts. Japonica
Glistens like coral in all of the neighboring gardens,
And to-day we have naming of parts.
This is the lower sling swivel. And this
Is the upper sling swivel, whose use you will see,
When you are given your slings. And this is the piling swivel,
Which in your case you have not got. The branches
Hold in the gardens their silent, eloquent gestures,
Which in our case we have not got.
This is the safety-catch, which is always released
With an easy flick of the thumb. And please do not let me
    See anyone using his finger.”

  5. Remember how the US and NATO refused to press the attack in Iraq and Afghanistan because of Ramadan?

AMMAN – Syrian security forces killed at least 18 civilians in attacks on tens of thousands of protesters demonstrating against the rule of President Bashar al-Assad on the first Friday of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, activists said.

  6. A Syrian friend tells me that we missed our chance in 2003. There was huge hope among the general population for American help. I know it sounds hard to believe, but had Bush invaded Iraq via Syria, there would have been popular support. The current uprising is unfortunately mostly Jihadis.

  7. A civilized and eminently sensible rebuttal to Margaret Atwood’s defense of the present library system in Toronto:
    http://opinion.financialpost.com/2011/08/05/lawrence-solomon-atwoods-library/
In reality, library branches have evolved into community centres that show kids how to carve pumpkins and provide pedometers for adults who want to keep fit. They rent out spare rooms, they help people find jobs. Worthy functions, all, but none are needed for an appreciation of the written word, and all would be better performed elsewhere, either at the city’s actual community centres or at the many churches and non-governmental organizations that provided the role of community centre before the library system invaded their turf. The many non-book readers who now use libraries have little in common with each other, partaking of library services mostly because they’re provided for free. By returning these community functions to the churches and NGOs that boast a real community, these institutions couldn’t help but be strengthened.
The Toronto Public Library spends in excess of $180-million a year, the great majority of it on salaries and very little of it — less than 10% — on books and other library items. Discarding non-library functions, and selling needless local branches and other assets, such as the bookmobiles that act as travelling kiosks, would realize a one-time windfall from sales of perhaps $100-million, while eliminating the lion’s share of the $180-million annual expense. Those immense savings can then be applied to doing real, and not fictional, good.
Did you hear that, Peggy: “… doing real, … not fictional good”?

  8. About one hundred and fifty loyal supporters arrived last Saturday in the late afternoon at the home of Barbara and Donald Tober to salute the work of Planned Parenthood Mid-Hudson Valley, and to enjoy a glass of wine and an hors d’oeuvre or two under the setting sun.

“Ontario wants money back from Navistar”
“The Ontario government plans to go after Navistar International Corporation to recoup some of the taxpayer money it gave the company to help keep its Chatham truck assembly factor from closing.
Chatham-Kent Essex MPP Pat Hoy told QMI Agency: “With the announcement of the immediate, permanent closure of Navistar truck facility in Chatham, Navistar has failed to meet their commitments under the agreement they signed with the Ontario government in 2004.”
He added: “Navistar has been notified that they have failed to fulfil their obligations and therefore our government will be pursuing our right to recover funds as outlined in our agreement with Navistar.”
However, Hoy didn’t have any details on why the government believes Navistar has breached its agreement, nor how much money the government wants to recoup.
Calls and e-mails sent by QMI Agency to Economic Development Minister Sandra Pupatello’s office for specifics were not returned.
Navistar announced the closure of the Chatham plant on Tuesday.
The province joined with the federal government to provide more than $60 million to the company after it announced plans to close the plant in 2003.”

  12. I should declare a bias first; I am probably the the most recent reader of “Atlas Shrugged” of my generation and am half way through “Reckless Endangerment”.
I am unable to NOT draw a mental comparison between Standard & Poors support for the rapacious promotors of Asset Backed Securities and the convenient downgrade of the U.S.A. credit rating.
My thinking keeps recycling around the scurrilous destoyers of many comforable retirements are now putting into place a programme of forcing the interst rates for U.S. Treasury notes to be raised.
    They will then lock in their ill-gotten wealth as the Equity Markets ratchet down and move into various luxurious dens of iniquity and live a life of ease until they can steal into the sunshine to:? Cheers;

  13. Peter Hitchens (Christopher’s brother):
It’s the drugs, stupid. In hundreds of square miles of supposed analysis of the Norway mass murder, almost nobody has noticed that the smirking Anders Breivik was taking large quantities of mind-altering chemicals.
In this case, the substances are an anabolic steroid called stanozolol, combined with an amphetamine-like drug called ephedrine, plus caffeine to make the mixture really fizz. I found these facts in Breivik’s vast, drivelling manifesto simply because I was looking for them.
The authorities and most of the media are more interested in his non-existent belief in fundamentalist Christianity [emphasis mine]. I doubt if the drugs would ever have been known about if Breivik hadn’t himself revealed this. I suspect that mind-bending drugs of some kind feature in almost all of the epidemic rampage killings that Western society is now suffering.

    “Buruma And The Warriors”
“Geert Wilders has been acquitted, but the progressive press is continuing the trial. Indeed, new evidence has been found, in the abject person of mass murderer Anders Breivik. Through their words and writings, Wilders and other criticizers of Islam would be partly responsible for Breivik’s crime.
Such nonsense does not deserve a reply. But that has changed since Ian Buruma joined the debate. This epitome of political correctness distinguishes himself from his less subtle ideological companions by his sense of nuance. He does not insult, he does not slander, he considers pros and cons, he argues. It is worth the while to consider his arguments. It is an instructive exercise. What do we see? Buruma has developed a way of reasoning which creates the false impression of an impartial investigation.”

  17. macd,
I get a similar impression from Buruma, who frequently turns up in the op-ed pages of the Globe and Mail. Timothy Garton Ash too.
