Loyal SDA readers have been putting up with dog shows all year – what’s one more? Here’s Ch. Nancolleth Markable winning Best In Show at Westminster Kennel Club, 1932.
I’d post footage of new Can.Am.Ch.Minuteman Underworld winning the Miniature Schnauzer Club of Canada National yesterday, but our videographer had to take him into the ring for me. So this ringside candid taken last month in Long Beach (where he finished his AKC title at the MSC of Southern California specialty) will have to do.

Way to go, Kate! And congratulations on all your great work on Canada’s best blog.
Racket lookin’ great, Kate, and congrats on decimating the competition! It’s not like you!….yeah, right!
Seriously, do you ever do anything…just for the heck of it? I mean, just not being the best?
Remember how Obama and the Democrats and their union buddies fought against GOP Governor of Wisconsin, Scott Walker, who wanted to get the state public service employees to pay, part, part, of their own benefits and pensions…rather than having the taxpayer pay it all?
Remember how Obama supported the union fight? How the Democrats in the State Congress went absent to Illinois so that the State couldn’t pass the bill? Well…
“Some school districts went from a $400,000 deficit to a $1,500,000 surplus as a result. Why?
It seems that the insurance company that provided all the “so-called benefits” to the teachers was an insurance company owned and operated by the teacher’s union. Since they were guaranteed to get the insurance business from the teachers, and the State had to pay for it and not the teachers, they were increasing the annual costs every single year to become the most expensive insurance company in the state.
Then the insurance company was donating millions and millions of dollars to their favorite (democrat) politicians, who when they got elected, guaranteed to keep funding the unions’ outrageous costs.
In other words, the insurance company was a “pass through” for Wisconsin taxpayer money directly to the democratic politicians who kept the whole scandal going.”
That’s why Obama and the Democrats sent in the thugs to protest against Gov. Walker.
ET
Probably nothing going on with PSAC or CUPE like that.
syncrodux – heh- I’ll bet that PSAC and CUPE does exactly and precisely the same thing. Except, of course, the laundered money is given to the Liberals.
ET
Kinda goes with the dipper decision on leadership…no?
Well, congratulations and High Fives, Kate!
… and High Paws to champion pooch Minuteman Underworld! 🙂
Congratulations Kate. Have fun.
ET, that was interesting about the insurance company and the teacher’s union in Wisconsin. Not surprising though.
“Except, of course, the laundered money is given to the Liberals”, or to the NDP, at least in Saskatchewan. The public service unions of whatever nature are thick with the natural governing party in Saskatchewan and union leaders switch jobs back and forth between union leadership and as NDP MLAs. One big happy family fleecing the taxpayer.
Wow! What a beautiful, sturdy boy. I always think Schnausers have devilish look about them. Big congrats to you,Racket, and your multi-talented filmer on the Specialty win and Am Ch.
Is Venus cleaning up too?
Oops, Schnauzers, what was I thinking?
In the 32 vid we dont see much of the Schnauzer, but the one there looks groomed quite differently than Can. Am.
I know nothing of dog shows, but it looks like styles and fashions change, at least for some. Tough to do with a short hair.
Congratulations to you Kate.
James Delingpole has just published an hilarious piece entitled “The 7 Kinds of Trolls”
Venus is doing well, too. She won the breed in the morning and went on to a group placing over about 90 dogs, while in the afternoon was, for all intents and purposes, “runner up” to Racket.
Good deal…take care.

The process of reconstruction, of rising from the ashes, of overcoming the trauma of having been deceived, exploited and manipulated – is drawn-out. It is difficult to trust again, to have faith, to love, to be led, to collaborate. Feelings of shame and guilt engulf the erstwhile followers of the narcissist. “Layoffs, Layoffs Everywhere You Look There Are Layoffs”
“This summer the pace of layoffs seems to be accelerating all over the nation. Just check out what has been happening over the past few weeks….
-Lockheed Martin has made “voluntary layoff offers” to 6,500 employees.
-Detroit is losing even more jobs. American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings has told the remaining 300 workers at its manufacturing facility in Detroit that their jobs will be ending in early 2012.
-Layoff notices have been sent to 519 employees of Milwaukee Public Schools, and more than 400 open positions are going to go unfilled.
-The Gap has announced that up to 200 stores will be closed over the next two years.
-Cisco has announced plans to lay off 9 percent of their total workforce.
-Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel says that 625 city employees will be losing their jobs as a result of cutbacks.
-Pharmaceutical giant Merck recently dumped 51 workers from an office in Raleigh, North Carolina.
-Perkins has revealed that they will be closing 58 restaurants.
-This week, Goldman Sachs announced that they will be eliminating 1,000 jobs.
-Cracker Barrel is rapidly reducing staff at its headquarters.
-Telecommunications and web marketing firm Crexendo has announced that it will be laying off about 30 percent of its workforce.
-Borders has announced that they will be shutting down their remaining 399 stores and that 10,700 employees will lose their jobs.
-Now that the space shuttle program has ended, thousands of NASA employees will be losing their jobs.
Sadly, there are hundreds of more examples of recent layoffs and job losses. One website that tracks these layoffs daily is Daily Job Cuts. It is pretty sad when there are entire websites that are devoted to chronicling how fast our economy is bleeding jobs.”

I want my new dollar/inflated dollars to be colored purple.
I think purple is the prettiest colored monopoly money made..
Anyone else like purple?
Fearless Leader, purple is good but the money should probably be white… all the good bled out of it.
Maybe they could start with just a corner faded white, then as as the inflation proceeds the fading could proceed with it, until in five years your US dollar would be a Whiteback with like one green corner.
They should also start printing them on more absorbent paper, so we can still get some use out of them when they’re not money anymore.
Nice doggie Kate. Does he gnarr on your hand if you pull his beard? That’s the most important thing, y’know. The hand gnarring. There should be a section for that at dog shows.

Just in case anyone missed this article by Lorrie Goldstein, on phony refugees to Canada:
http://www.sunnewsnetwork.ca/sunnews/opinions/archives/2011/07/20110721-093938.html
Immigration Minister Jason Kenney deserves credit for trying to tighten Canada’s porous borders when it comes to phony immigrants.
But such is the insane political correctness of our times that not even a Tory majority government is prepared to take the two steps that would solve the far bigger problem of phony refugees.
First, make the detention of all refugee claimants arriving in Canada mandatory for up to one year, until the veracity of their stories can be determined.
Second, invoke the Constitution’s notwithstanding clause to overturn the 1985 Supreme Court of Canada ruling known as the Singh decision.
That judgment, which meant anyone getting a foot onto Canadian soil was entitled to the protection of the Charter of Rights, destroyed the credibility of our refugee process.
Congratulations, Kate! Beautiful dogs.
A-hem….
To the citizens of the United States of America, in the light of your failure to elect a competent President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective today.
Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths and other territories. Except Utah, which she does not fancy. Your new prime minister (The Right Honourable Tony Blair, MP for the 97.85% of you who have until now been unaware that there is a world outside your borders) will appoint a minister for America without the need for further elections. Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire will be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed. To aid in the transition to a British Crown Dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:
1. You should look up revocation in the Oxford English Dictionary. Then look up aluminium. Check the pronunciation guide. You will be amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it. The letter ‘U’ will be reinstated in words such as ‘favour’ and ‘neighbour’, skipping the letter ‘U’ is nothing more than laziness on your part. Likewise, you will learn to spell ‘doughnut’ without skipping half the letters. You will end your love affair with the letter ‘Z’ (pronounced ‘zed’ not ‘zee’) and the suffix ize will be replaced by the suffix ise. You will learn that the suffix ‘burgh’ is pronounced ‘burra’ e.g. Edinburgh. You are welcome to respell Pittsburgh as ‘Pittsberg’ if you can’t cope with correct pronunciation.
Generally, you should raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. Look up vocabulary. Using the same twenty seven words interspersed with filler noises such as “like” and “you know” is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. Look up interspersed. There will be no more ‘bleeps’ in the Jerry Springer show. If you’re not old enough to cope with bad language then you shouldn’t have chat shows. When you learn to develop your vocabulary then you won’t have to use bad language as often.
2. There is no such thing as “US English”. We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take account of the reinstated letter ‘u’ and the elimination of -ize.
3. You should learn to distinguish the English and Australian accents. It really isn’t that hard. English accents are not limited to dorkney,upper-class twit or Mancunian (Daphne in Frasier). You will also have to learn how to understand regional accents – Scottish dramas such as Taggart will no longer be broadcast with subtitles. While we’re talking about regions, you must learn that there is no such place as Devonshire in England. The name of the county is Devon. If you persist in calling it Devonshire, all American States will become shires e.g. Texasshire, Floridashire, Louisianashire.
4. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as the good guys. Hollywood will be required to cast English actors to play English characters. British sit-coms such as Men Behaving Badly or Red Dwarf will not be re-cast and watered down for a wishy-washy American audience who can’t cope with the humour of occasional political incorrectness.
5. You should relearn your original national anthem, God Save The Queen but only after fully carrying out task 1. We would not want you to get confused and give up half way through.
6. You should stop playing American football. There is only one kind of football. What you refer to as American football is not a very good game. The 2.15% of you who are aware that there is a world outside your borders may have noticed that no one else plays American football. You will no longer be allowed to play it, and should instead play proper football. Initially, it would be best if you played with the girls. It is a difficult game. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which is similar to American “football”, but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like nancies). We are hoping to get together at least a US Rugby sevens side by 2005. You should stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the ‘World Series’ for a game which is not played outside of America. Since only 2.15% of you are aware that there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. Instead of baseball, you will be allowed to play a girls’ game called rounders, which is baseball without fancy team strip, oversized gloves, collector cards or hotdogs.
7. You will no longer be allowed to own or carry guns. You will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous in public than a vegetable peeler. Because we don’t believe you are sensible enough to handle potentially dangerous items, you will require a permit if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.
8. July 4th is no longer a public holiday. November 2nd will be a new national holiday, but only in England. It will be called Indecisive Day.
9. All American cars are hereby banned. They are crap and it is for your own good. When we show you German cars, you will understand what we mean. All road intersections will be replaced with roundabouts. You will start driving on the left with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and conversion tables. Roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour.
10. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French fries are not real chips. Fries aren’t even French, they are Belgian though 97.85% of you (including the guy who discovered fries while in Europe) are not aware of a country called Belgium. Those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called crisps. Real chips are thick cut and fried in animal fat. The traditional accompaniment to chips is beer which should be served warm and flat. Waitresses will be trained to be more aggressive with customers.
11. As a sign of penance 5 grams of sea salt per cup will be added to all tea made within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, this quantity to be doubled for tea made within the city of Boston itself.
12. The cold tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all, it is lager. From November 1st only proper British Bitter will be referred to as beer, and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as Lager. The substances formerly known as American Beer will henceforth be referred to as Near-Frozen Knat’s Urine, with the exception of the product of the American Budweiser company whose product will be referred to as Weak Near-Frozen Knat’s Urine. This will allow true Budweiser (as manufactured for the last 1000 years in Pilsen,Czech Republic) to be sold without risk of confusion.
13. From November 10th the UK will harmonise petrol (or Gasoline, as you will be permitted to keep calling it until April 1st 2005) prices with the former USA. The UK will harmonise its prices to those of the former USA and the Former USA will, in return, adopt UK petrol prices (roughly $6/US gallon- get used to it).
14. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you’re not adult enough to be independent. Guns should only be handled by adults. If you’re not adult enough to sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist then you’re not grown up enough to handle a gun.
15. Please tell us who killed JFK. It’s been driving us crazy.
16. Tax collectors from Her Majesty’s Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all revenues due (backdated to 1776).
Thank you for your co-operation and have a great day.
If anyone talks to you about the famine in Somalia, remember this….
(RNW) — For Somalia’s Al-Qaeda-linked rebels, the drought devastating parts of the country is being exploited by external enemies, claiming that local Muslims were adequately addressing the crisis.
The Al-Shebab insurgents have expelled several foreign aid groups from regions under their control since 2009 and reiterated recently that the ban was still in force after the United Nations declared famine in two regions they rule.
Shebab spokesman Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage denied there was famine in the southern Somalia regions of Bakool and Lower Shabelle as declared by the UN, but admitted that there was drought.
In a speech to the rebel radio, Rage said local traders and other residents have been the main providers of help to the drought-hit population and that “God did not make them need an outside enemy or non-Muslims, the people in the country fed them very well.”
“We need Muslim people to be aware that the external enemy especially non-Muslims have been thinking of a new strategy.
“The new strategy is to transport them abroad, especially in Christian countries like Ethiopia and Kenya, so that their faith can be destroyed and that they could be staff and soldiers for the Christians,” Rage charged.
Thousands of Somalis have fled to neighbouring Ethiopia and Kenya to seek relief from the harsh drought that has affected some 12 million people across the Horn of Africa region.

“Right Wing Hacks Twist the Facts”
I spent most of most of last week camping. Not only is this a relaxing activity but it is a great chance to people watch (in a non-creepy way). The almost perfect weather meant lot of families were out and about on the walking paths, playgrounds and beaches. The reason I mention this is that there has been some interesting books and columns in the last few months about parents and parenting.
Today the globe and mail has the oddly titled “Do big families affect the ‘quality’ of children? ”
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/economy/economy-lab/frances-woolley/do-big-families-affect-the-quality-of-children/article2114025/
In theory, there is a trade-off between the quantity and “quality” of children.
…This theory raises two questions.
First, what happens in the real world? Do parents really invest less in each child when they have more children?
Second, when parents spend less money on expensive activities, are children worse off? Does their academic and other performance suffer?
Personally, I think that quality vs. quantity theory is completely wrong except in extreme cases (octomom, for instance). To back this up is a book from Bryan Caplan, Author of Selfish Reasons to Have More Kids
http://reason.com/blog/2011/07/21/do-parents-matter-qa-with-brya
In a world of Tiger Moms and helicopter parents who monitor and agonize over every minor activity in which their children engage, the father of three says that parents actually have minimal influence over long-term outcomes for their children. Rather than fretting over whether junior is admitted into Baby Einstein violin programs, Caplan argues that parents should relax and learn to enjoy their kids’ childhood.
Basically, his theory is that genetics is the determining factor not poetry, art and other enrichment activities. This theory, IMO, is backed up by better studies than the G&M article.
Oh,yes, here is a third article that I would love to send to my Tiger Mom/Helicopter Mom S-I-L but won’t because of the inevitable passive/aggressive warfare it would cause.
http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/print/2011/07/how-to-land-your-kid-in-therapy/8555/
Until, one day, another question occurred to me: Was it possible these parents had done too much?
Here I was, seeing the flesh-and-blood results of the kind of parenting that my peers and I were trying to practice with our own kids, precisely so that they wouldn’t end up on a therapist’s couch one day. We were running ourselves ragged in a herculean effort to do right by our kids—yet what seemed like grown-up versions of them were sitting in our offices, saying they felt empty, confused, and anxious. Back in graduate school, the clinical focus had always been on how the lack of parental attunement affects the child. It never occurred to any of us to ask, what if the parents are too attuned? What happens to those kids?
shouldn’t they have just rubbed his head and made three wishes ?
(Emirates 24/7) — A Saudi man is believed to have been gripped by jinn (ghosts) during a picnic with his friends in a valley which is reputed to be haunted. But he was later treated in an exorcist-style session by the Gulf Kingdom’s religious police.
The unnamed man and seven friends from the western town of Makkah were vacationing in the nearby Taif city when they decided to descend into Wadi Al-Amak (the deep abyss) despite warnings by local people.
After a short evening trip in the valley, the colour of the man’s began to change and his behavior became aggressive before he lost balance and fell down.
When his friends tried to talk to him, he shouted and pushed them away while his eyes were fixed at an area deep in the valley.
“Friends then overpowered him and washed his face with cold water…it was clear the man was haunted by a jinn,” Sabq Arabic language daily said.
“They then decided to carry him back to town…they were told that the valley is haunted and that there were two similar cases in the past.”
The paper said the man was taken to the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, the most influential Islamic law-enforcement authority in the conservative Moslem Gulf nation.
“The Commission brought experts in such cases and subjected the man to a session of Koran recitation and incense burning until the jinn was forced to get out of the man through his hand…once the session was over, the man began to restore his strength…after a while he fully recovered and started to ask his friends why he was brought to that place.”
A conservative speaks:
“Real change is supposed to come slowly, deliberately.”

RWHCW @ 1:06 p.m.:
The Kinsella article appeared in the Toronto Sun on Sunday as well as other newspapers.
He criticizes Glenn Beck, Pat Buchanan, Michael Coren, and Mark Steyn for comments they made after the Norway massacre. Some of those comments are more debatable than others, in my opinion.
Then he comes up with this gem:
“The facts about Breivik, as reported by the New York Times … are quite different. The Times has reported Breivik is “a right-wing fundamentalist Christian …”
Which is precisely the kind of “fact” that various columnists have refuted over the past week and a half, and which has led to a decline in the reputation of the New York Times over the years.
As I interpret it, Breivik believed that Europe’s culture had been dominated by Christianity for centuries, and therefore was willing to regard it as historically “Christian” in nature, but he did not personally have a strong religious faith and did not accept Christ as his saviour, which (if I’m not mistaken) is what most Christians will tell you is the single defining characteristic of a genuine Christian.
The bottom line, in case anyone was considering it, is that there is no evidence to justify any interfere with freedom of expression, including that of the press.
Re falling concrete slab in Montreal:
The reason for crumbling infrastructure is the same reason for a struggling justice system: politicians are wasting money on vote-buying handouts which don’t leave them enough money to undertake their proper functions.
The justice system is a proper function of government whereas transportation is not. But the latter isn’t going anywhere soon, and it’s a lot more useful to the public than vote-buying handout scam programs, therefore at present it should be near the top of the funding list after justice. It’s practically everything else that has to go.
