  1. I’m sure it was a fine video, but between the annoying advertising and the inordinately long time to buffer whatever it was we were supposed to see…. I guess I’ll never know.
I’m so old I actually remember when the internet was free of advertizing.

  2. A bit of “A Star is Born”, a bit of “Singing in the Rain” with the gimmick of “Silent Movie”. That could work, because a good story is a good story.

  3. Quote: was the terrier that plays Valentin’s faithful four-legged companion. Named Uggy, he looked like a shoo-in for this year’s Palm Dog prize for best canine acting.
They have an award for best canine acting? That says it all, Hollywood is sooo lacking in entertaining ideas, it isn’t going to the dogs it is the dog and a short, shaggy, irrelevant mutt humping it’s self.

  4. I’ll go see it primarily because of the comment in the first line, “festival-goers who’d been wondering if Cannes this year was going to be about more than dysfunctional families and sexual deviancy”. I’m soooo tired of this tripe that I’ll support just about anything that isn’t dysfunctional, dystopic, dysthymic, or deviant. Unfortunately, that doesn’t leave me much to watch or read.

  5. When will they ever bring back 8 track tapes…I just loved how they worked in my car when it was minus 20 outside; oh and those “clicks” in the middle of a tune; just charming.
Now, what about black and white tv’s in huge oak cabinets with one mono low-fi audio speaker?…Don’t forget the rabbit ears…Why does that vertical picture control knob always has to be behind the cabinet in the most awkward place?
Only “progressives” can get away with “regress” and have it declared ‘cool'(By other progressives of course…Right wingers have no say in cultural novelty)
Case in point: It is much cooler to “text” with a cellphone than to actually speak to the other party ‘live’…The telegraph came before the telephone didn’t it?…Texting is progress?
The only “retro” stuff I find cool is the Detroit car makers bringing back the old body styles…Camaro, Challenger, Mustang. They did not bring back drum brakes and 2 miles to a gallon carburators though. Just yesterday’s look with today’s technology.
Now, let’s talk about bringing back Thalidomide for mommy’s morning sickness…(For progressive mothers only 😉 )

  6. I had to look at that hand in the coat thing a second time.
    Too early in the morning…..

  7. I’m a little hard of hearing from sandblasting water towers and bridges for too many years, so it’s not like I was going to the movies to listen to the dialogue, most of which seems to be delivered in a needless whisper during a rock concert or jet fly-over scene.
Haven’t seen a good movie in at least 5 years, this one looks OK and John Goodman is in it.

  8. the annoying advertising and the inordinately long time to buffer whatever it was we were supposed to see.

Just turn your head around and watch FOX news during the commercial….
A woman stuck her 8 year old girl in the face with botox.. Lost custody!
    Anyway.. everybody’s a critic.
?Where are the closed caption lines,
didn’t spend enough for old 1920-1930 cars,
and the dog stole the show.

I’d suggest using adblock plus and noscript.
They are firefox extensions. It may help.

  10. I remember a portrayal of the same plot in a Sid Caesar TV episode back in the later 50s or early 60s … the plot was the same … a huge silent movie star named Rex Handsome moved to the talkies where it was discovered that he had a girl’s voice and then was shunned and went down the tubes. It was very funny. Perhaps the idea for this movie came from that great bit.
There is a mature audience who are starved for some acting and a plot. I think it may do fairly well. The same audience that likes the King’s Speech will go and see this movie.

  11. Second what Celina posted. You will not go back to watching any youtube type video on IE again.
Cute enough looking film, but not something I would pay to see in a theatre.

  12. I don’t watch B&W productions or films that need an English subtext.
    Silent films?
    No way.
    B&W mimes, no way.

  13. Hockey Night in Canada would be much less annoying if we had just the crowd noise and eliminated the bad actors doing play by play and colour.

  14. Why would I need to go to the theater? They just showed me the whole movie!
Besides, I’m sure they’ll find a way to twist this goof’s unfaithfulness and fall from grace into an indictment of Christian marriage. From the trailer it looks like ManTrap Girl does good. Not exactly a ringing endorsement for decent behavior.
Stealing somebody’s man is -dishonorable-. Women should have honor too.

  15. What better way to avoid Harpers daconian HRC’s than have a silent picture. No one can accuse you have offending them.

  16. What better way to avoid Harpers draconian HRC’s new laws, than have a silent picture that can offend no one. No one can accuse you of saying the wrong thing .

  17. The women were too skinny. Even movie actresses weren’t that skinny in the late twenties.
