I sincerely suggest you read the linked piece in my earlier post about the Mississippi. There are no easy answers. If you say “Let nature take its course”, then the lower Mississippi from Old River to New Orleans will soon become a silt-clogged stream, and New Orleans/Baton Rouge and a host of industries (including 12% of US gas refining capacity) will be virtually out of business, while the Atchafalaya basin will be flooded, putting tens of thousands of people out of homes, farms, and businesses. If you try to maintain the present course of the Mississippi, then you have the problems you have today. If you try to reduce flooding upriver, you exacerbate problems downriver.
As I said, it’s a long read, but it’s very well written, and instructive.
