He (Iggy) shows again and again that he is uncomfortable in Liberal Party of Canada skin. He cannot be himself and toe the Party line at the same time. That’s one of the problems being out of the country for so long. Iggy’s positions are more in tune with the Liberal Party doctrine his parents generation forty or fifty years ago. Not only that, but the current flavour of Liberalism has consistently shown they have no idea what Conservatism stands for today. Their notions of what it means to be a conservative are based on notions that are also forty or fifty years out of date.
Iggy is not only uncomfortable in Liberal skin, he’s uncomfortable in a politician’s skin. It shows in the interviews he does. He hasn’t mastered the skill of spin and deflection and is too d@amned honest to the point that he betrays his party and shows that his true colours are more akin to modern conservatism. His real views on torture, the Iraq war, the UN, etc., etc. are at odds with what comes out of his mouth and that’s why he’s finding the Liberal Party leadership role so difficult.
If he ever does become PM he’ll so much better if he stays true to his own conscience, but he’s shown that he’s too easily manipulated by and too willing to kow-tow to the currently prevailing capital “L” liberal stance.
I think the Libs thought they were getting a new Trudeau, but whatever you think about Trudeau, unlike Iggy, he was his own man and said and did what his conscience dictated, not what other party members might have wanted him to do.

This party has debts that have not been repaid, they have few donors, but yet they have no end of money for ads and jets, Martin could’nt even get credit for liberal jet fuel in Vancouver in 06, and now Iggula can push elections every 2.5 years, things just don’t add up. I did and do appreciate Mr. Ignatieff’s new found honesty regarding the issue of the coalition (formal or informal). Now that he has admitted what we all knew was the real motivation for the election, it might be useful to consider the role of the Governor General in all this. The reason I say that is that I am not convinced that Mr Harper’s 2 scenarios are the complete picture. The way I see it, there are 4 possibilities.
Mr Harper says there are only 2 possibilities: the coalition or a majority CPC government. These are certainly 2 of the 4 possibilities but there are 2 more. He said before the election something like “they will deny it every day of the election, but the next day they will do it.” Up until yesterday, he was correct about the Liberals regarding the first part of his statement. The second part is the issue. There is a difference between “they will do it” and “they will request permission from the GG to do it”. I, like Mr. Harper, am not in doubt about the desire by the 3 parties for a coalition; it is the certainty of it happening that I doubt although I concede that the GG could make a bad decision and we could have a coalition government. That is only in the event that the GG makes a bad decision. He will have to consider the factors. The third possibility follows.
First, the GG needs to ensure that any government that is formed is in Canada’s best interests. He will weigh two decisions that are both within the letter of the law: the idea of the coalition as it would work out in practice, and the idea of dissolving Parliament and calling another election in the summer. Yesterday, Mr. Layton called the idea of a second election in 2011 ridiculous. Hopefully, the GG will be more thoughtful in his analysis.
The GG will need to see through the optics of the 2008 written deal where the role of the Bloc was not mentioned as part of the formal Coalition but the Bloc did agree to not vote non-confidence to bring down the coalition government for a specified period of time. The GG will need to see through this because an agreement to simply not vote non-confidence does include being absent from the House during a vote. An absent Bloc vote during a non-confidence vote would ensure the Conservatives could bring down a Liberal/NDP Coalition government at any opportunity if they hold more seats than the combined Liberals and NDP. Therefore, a simply agreement to not vote non-confidence is insufficient; an agreement to always vote confidence over a specified period of time would be required. In essence, a formal Coalition agreement between all 3 parties would be required; it would need to be even stronger than the 2008 agreement.
Although the idea of Quebec separating is somewhat dubious, the GG should give some weight to the idea that a Bloc supported Coalition would increase the odds of the Bloc pursuing its agenda, and should it accomplish that agenda in its entirety, an instant Conservative majority would emerge. However, I am unsure as to how much weight the GG should give to this argument.
There are other more political arguments that can be used against the idea of the Coalition, but the main point is that the GG will need to be convinced that the government can actually govern and that it is in Canada’s interests. So while Mr. Layton may be right in saying that it would be ridiculous to have two elections in 2011, the GG may decide that the idea of a Coalition is even more ridiculous and a second, summer 2011 election would be called.
The fourth possibility is that in a minority Conservative government, Mr. Harper modifies the budget oh so slightly, and gives one of the parties wiggle room to go back on their campaign promise to vote against the budget and things carry on as they have over the last 5 years.
Of course, there is also the possibility of a majority Conservative government.
The CPC war room has been earily quiet on twitter lately. People have claimed there is not much going on ad wise on tv either. Something is being cooked up. Lets hope it’s good.

My family and I have benefited greatly from the economic boom in Saskatchewan and I am gravely concerned for western Canada. Jack and Iggy have both admitted in no uncertain terms that they ARE running on a ‘Western Alienation’ platform.
I’ve asked two questions on John Gormely’s show lately, and I think they are very pertinent:
1) what will the cost be to Canada if the Conservatives DON’T get a majority?
2) How many jobs must be lost in Western Canada until we stand-up and do something about it?
These are the questions Canadians and especially western Canadians should be asking themselves.
Finally, regarding garrysworld’s Western Block Party suggestion; I think you’re a bit premature. The NEP was generations ago, and Gen X’ers (myself) and younger demos haven’t experienced such devastation personally. We were too young to understand such things. A Carbon Tax and a stolen election will be the necessary reminder to old folks and the wake-up call for the youts before any serious momentum can be gained. Think of it as the Tea Party’s BO moment.
And, FYI, I hosted an unscientific poll asking: Should western Canada separate from Canada? I believe the numbers were 96%+ ‘YES’ out of 500+ ppl that took the poll. Also, I’ve spoken personally to close to 100 people regarding this and rarely get any resistance; even from Progressives. Whether you are Right or Left, western separation is an easy sell for a westerner. For Progressives, you need only explain how many junkie needles we could hand-out if we didn’t transfer 10s of billions to Quebec every year.JMO
Old Butch
John was in the fertilized egg business. He had several hundred young
layers (hens), called ‘pullets,’ and ten roosters to fertilize the eggs.
He kept records, and any rooster not performing went into the soup pot
and was replaced.
This took a lot of time, so he bought some tiny bells and attached them
to his roosters. Each bell had a different tone, so he could tell from a
distance which rooster was performing. Now, he could sit on the porch
and fill out an efficiency report by just listening to the bells.
John’s favorite rooster, old Butch, was a very fine specimen, but this
morning he noticed old Butch’s bell hadn’t rung at all! When he went to
investigate, he saw the other roosters were busy chasing pullets,
bells-a-ringing, but the pullets, hearing the roosters coming, would run
for cover. To John’s amazement, old Butch had his bell in his beak, so
it couldn’t ring. He’d sneak up on a pullet, do his job and walk on to
the next one.
John was so proud of old Butch, he entered him in the Renfrew County
Fair and he became an overnight sensation among the judges. The result
was the judges not only awarded old Butch the “No Bell Piece Prize,” but
they also awarded him the “Pulletsurprise” as well.
Clearly old Butch was a politician in the making. Who else but a
politician could figure out how to win two of the most coveted awards on
our planet by being the best at sneaking up on the unsuspecting populace
and screwing them when they weren’t paying attention.
Vote carefully this year, the bells are not always audible.
Iggie just bought 1/2 hour air time on Global and City on easter sunday. There’s no way that isn’t the whole load being blown right there. I think this explains the lack of action from CPC at this time. They’ve been waiting for Iggy to blow all his cash.

Just a point or two: I agree with James, B.C.probably wouldn’t be interested in a Western Bloc. Nor would Manitoba, cuz they have no large oil concerns that the spendthrift Eastern socialists would be going after. However, what should be so very obvious to all of us dumb prairie folks is that the most success and potent political party in Canada of the last 5 or 10 years has been the Bloc Quebecquois, nes pas? There is a very real need for a Prairie Bloc Party, not (necessarily) as a separatist organization, but so we can send strong representatives to hostile Ottawa (and the Eastern media – which in itself is a Bloc party for Ontario) where they would stand up for Prairie development and argue and vote against anything that woould hurt the West.

A colonel is not exactly a nobody but at the same time what this story tells me is how high the military rated Count Ziffy MIA’s advice. If his advice was a high priority he would have been talking to a general or an admiral not a colonel. As it was the colonel was tasked with getting the highbrow way of justifying the war and they picked Count Ziffy MIA. Of course Count Ziffy MIA and his ego could not turn down the opportunity to offer advice to the American military and would have given the same advice to an acting lance corporal without pay but that’s a tale for another day.
