Researchers have discovered that contrary to popular belief half of the ice flows in the Karakoram range of the mountains are actually growing rather than shrinking.
The discovery adds a new twist to the row over whether global warming is causing the world’s highest mountain range to lose its ice cover.
It further challenges claims made in a 2007 report by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that the glaciers would be gone by 2035.
Although the head of the panel Dr Rajendra Pachauri later admitted the claim was an error gleaned from unchecked research, he maintained that global warming was melting the glaciers at “a rapid rate”, threatening floods throughout north India.
The new study by scientists at the Universities of California and Potsdam has found that half of the glaciers in the Karakoram range, in the northwestern Himlaya, are in fact advancing and that global warming is not the deciding factor in whether a glacier survives or melts.

to explain their propaganda; they usually keep the story focused on the future predictions…Showing the recorded past with it’s cycles of ups and downs would give the lie away. The past will be mentioned only if it fits the narrative like in this case.
CTV will never mention the 1930’s which were as hot or hotter than anything we have seen between 1988 and 1998…And of course the fact that the 70’s cold period grew between certain years and then started to warm up again after. In other words, what if 2012 has more sub zero days than this year and 2013 and so on?…ONE THING THEY ALL REFUSE TO TALK ABOUT IS THE SUN (SOLAR MINIMUM) WHICH IS THE NUMBER ONE DRIVER…THE SUN’S FLARE ACTIVITY HAS BEEN DECREASING SINCE 1998 AND REACHED ZERO FLARE IN 2009: THE COOLING EFFECTS OF THIS WE HAVE STARTED TO FEEL EVER SINCE.
I’ve been saying “it’s the sun”, for years Terry Tory, and I’m not a scientist or a polititian huckster or a fruit fly specialist, or a train engineer, I just know, when the house is cold I go to the THERMOstat. I will bet almost anyone who comments here, knows common sense tells us, it is the SUN that dictates all life here on earth, not scare stories from the wolf wolf crowd and their puppet masters. When I drive the Icefields Parkway and stop at the Columbia Icefields, there are little posts with dates on them showing the recession of the Athabasca Glacier. The 1849 post showing how much farther the glacier extended during that time, is way beyond the parking lot–almost up to the road itself. I wonder what sorts of 19th century emissions could be blamed for the shrinking glacier then?
I paste the following from Wikipedia (a completely impartial source as you all know): “The Little Ice Age was a period from about 1550 to 1850 when the world experienced relatively cooler temperatures compared to the present. Subsequently, until about 1940, glaciers around the world retreated as the climate warmed substantially. Glacial retreat slowed and even reversed temporarily, in many cases, between 1950 and 1980 as a slight global cooling occurred.”
So coolings and warmings appear to have occurred before in the absence of pervasive carbon emissions–unless one can argue that burning coal in London and clearing fields increased during periods of warming.
Perhaps this if off topic but I’d be interested in seeing if some of you agree with my observation. In this article, a report on glacier recession by the North Cascade Glacier Climate Project: http://www.nichols.edu/departments/glacier/glacier_retreat.htm partway down, there are two photos of the Milk Lake area purporting to show that the glacier entirely melted away since 1988. When I look closely at the photos, it seems to me they were taken from a completely different angle and point of view and in a different season. The one showing the lake (and no snow) was taken from a vantage point further to the left and farther back. The one showing the previous glacier (now supposedly melted all away) was, in my opinion, taken during the winter (showing lots of snow) and from a point over a ridge farther to the right. The “lake”, supposedly all that remains of the melted remnants of the glacier, is not even in the same valley. You can see the mountain way in the distance, with permanent snow clinging to the slopes–in fact, looking quite normal in summer mode. It’s just my unqualified opinion.
How many times, and by such small unchallenged acts, has the notion of climate change been tweaked to support a particular desired conclusion. I’m not questioning that the Rocky Mountain glaciers are in recession. They are. But they responded to changes in climate that occurred long before man had any particular influence, and they’re not likely to advance even if I start riding my bicycle everywhere.
The well documented history of the current Recent geologic period shows a clear pattern of long periods of glaciation – in the 100,000 years+ range interspersed with shorter periods, in the range of 20,000 years of “Warm” periods.
We are currently in the very late stages of the current Warm period. The next Ice Age could have started last week for all the IPCC knows, or cares
Remember, at the peak of the last Ice advance, Toronto, Ottawa & Montreal were under about two miles of ice.
No need to pray for an asteroid when we know Mother Nature has her own plans for the center of the Canadian Progressive universe.

The cracks are turning into ravines for the leftist Global Warming ideaology. I drove the Columbia glacier this winter and yes it has retreated and has been retreating for generations.The fact is they still exist and if the ones that are debris covered in the Himilayayas are advancing then they will be around for generations to come. There is record snowfall in some of the mountain areas this winter.
On another note. I listened to Drew Lerner who is a Senior Meteorologist @ WorldWeather Inc. in Overland Park, Kansas. His commentary and presentation was very detailed and very informative and he basically poopooed the Global Warming Alarmists. In his view and study of climate there are three basic things that will affect the earth’s weather patterns. They are sunspot activity that in 2010 is in a distinct declining to negative trend. The La Nina and ElNino effect; which is related to the temperature of Ocean water between Australia and the South American Coast. We are currently in a very strong La Nina which will bring more snow and wet weather to North America,wet weather to Australia adn Hot dry conditions to Russia and China. The other effect on weather is what is called the Arctic Oscillation. In recent history this anomoly has been in positive territory creating warmer temperatures in the temperate latitudes. In 2010 there was a steep decline into negative territory thus giving colder conditions in the temperate latitudes. check out http://www.arctic.noaa.gov/detect/climate-ao.shtml for a more detailed explanation. The climate is a very complex system that is affected by a multitude of things mostly beyond human control and not completly understood. The climate will go through a multitude of cycles that will create weather patterns that may be alarming but as Mr. Lerner put it very succinctly we have been here before. The science from the greenies is full of holes.

rita, there is also a marker showing the location of the toe of the Athabasca Glacier in, if I remember correctly, 1854. (I took a photo of it but can’t locate it at the moment). It is located part way up the slope east of the Icefields Parkway, right beside the upper parking lot of the Visitor Centre. The was 50 years before the invention of the automobile, when the only access to the area was by horse or on foot. Obviously the recession of the toe of the glacier from that time had nothing to do with ‘AGW’.
I was also on a cruise to Alaska and the Glacier Bay National Park wardens indicated the location of the toe of that glacier when it was visited by Captain George Vancouver in 1794 and also the location of the toe 100 years later when John Muir visited the place. The glacier had receded almost 50 miles during that 100 years, once again long before anyone had ever heard of ‘AGW’.
Allberta Clipper – I’ve seen that post at the Icefields Parkway–didn’t know about the Alaskan one. Most people agree that the climate is changing. I don’t even dispute that human activity might be contributing to it–though I don’t think anyone can say how much. Perhaps our activity is even beneficial. However, I disagree with the proposed remedies because no-one can demonstrate that they would make any difference, they all appear to be designed to enrich particular individuals or groups, or they’re an excuse for more taxation and wealth redistribution.
I was intrigued by the photos in the report I found (when I was trying to refresh my memory on glacier recession). Just as the Globe and Mail invariably publishes a photo of smokestacks (where the majority of the emissions consist of steam) when they write a story about dirty emissions, the writer of the report deliberately chose 2 photos that appeared to emphasize his point but were not of the same scene. They were taken in the same vicinity, but not the same time of year or at the same viewpoint. How could a true scientist or scholar justify presenting that as evidence?
That melting Himalayan glacier hoax was known to be bogus from the get go.
North of Kashmir in the area where India, Pakistan and China met is the Siachen glacier….it forms the disputed border between India and Pakistan. It has been a active battle-ground for over 60 years. Both antagonists have sustained a few casualties from enemy action but both have lost thousands to exposure and altitude sickness in that hostile environment. India holds the glacier while Pakistan holds the surrounding high ground. Both sides lose people with every weather front. A veteran of that discribed it as the Battle of Bostogne, being fought on Mount Everest. The Siachen glacier is growing and is about 70 km long…..general knowledge for both India and Pakistan as well as China.
