The phrase “Harper Tories” is more than hack branding, it’s a precise definition. The boy from Leaside created the modern Conservative Party and turned it into the party of government. Barring the unforeseen – the Prime Minister being revealed as a cross dresser, Stockwell Day getting his wetsuit out of mothballs, a sudden outbreak of socialism in rural Alberta – the Conservatives are likely to remain the party of government for the indefinite future.
The Gods have more.

The gods smile upon the land . . . they have an feux Canadian called Iggy running the Liberals and a wannbe Marxist masquerading as a big hearted socialist running the NDP.
Bring on the election
Harper is from Etobicoke, not Leaside. The first of many errors and lapses of logic.
oh ye of little faith and patience..i disagree strongly with the critique…
PMSH cannot afford to alienate the wavering nervous ninnies and nellies voters he is weaning from statism…i keep telling you…get the majority in Parliament and the tumbrels will be rolling the next day..
Harper was born in Leaside and spent the first 12 years of his life there. How come you didn’t know that, Fister?

John: Being a conservative in the Terrance Corcoran vein I certainly hope you are right. I met Stephen Harper back in the Reform and UA days and felt the same as you do now. However, over time I’ve become disillusioned with his run away spending/stimulus and realistically have to wonder how much different from the Liberals has he become?
Stephen Harper is a patient man,…for the most part, and has long term goals and vision. Otherwise he would not be able to stomach the deceit and skulduggery of the liberal mindset, espoused by those sitting across the aisle week after tedious week in the House, as well as their best friends at CBC, CTV and the other media hacks.
He realizes that the work cannot be done which really needs to be done under a coalition government, but as he continues to keep his poker face on and govern from a position of straight-forward thinking, he is satisfied with winning many small “l” – liberals who are seeing Harper as a pragmatist. This is what the liberal mindset will tolerate without the shrieking of bloody murder which we are hearing from the US leftist media.
Politicians are like Hobbits, you give them the ring and they turn into Gollum.
All of them!
well i am confident harper will get a majority govornemnt.
The clowns he is up against will make it easy for him but there folllowers may not!!!
Harper is a realistic conservative.
He knows you can’t rip the teat away from the lips of all the rent seekers and those who believe they are entitled to their entitlements.
It is a slow gradual process of cutting off the supply of free milk at the teat . . . until they finally just get tired of sucking & coming up dry.
That was a brief but decent read. It did make me laugh though, as I had actually forgotten small fartin junior was ever PM, not hard to do I guess. But then the memories come back, not of PMPM, so microscopic was he I can’t remeber anything noteworthy save that stupid look with the guitar when it was all going wrong. My source of laughter was the “board”. My God, when I remember the egos on this band of never weres.
David Herle, that smug squishy fat nobody from Canada’s dripping A$$hole, the Peg.
John Duffy, that effette little boy who got squashed by another by another Duffy.
Equipment boy Webster
Mike Robinson another smug nobody
Elly Alboim, only regarded as somebody by other nobodies at the CBC.
The most enjoyable part of watching these guys fail and flail was that two of the worst political hack journalists were so taken in by these clowns that they made complete mockeries of themselves, namely Delacourt and Boag.
I don’t blame Harper for the ongoing suffocating climate of political correctness in Canada, but he’s the only person with a realistic chance of breaking through the media-imposed code of silence when it comes to any kind of criticism of the politically correct progressive “Canadian values” agenda. And while he may not be rocking boats as hard as somebody else would, he still gets the same treatment as they might, because it is assumed by our progressive elites that he thinks this way.
So why not take the opportunity to engage in battle and represent our hidden viewpoints on such issues as climate fraud and free speech, possibly even the private enterprise model of health care? Why not get in the face of the liberal elites and challenge all their assumptions, instead of this stealth campaign where even the closest supporters don’t know for sure what the man really thinks?
Given the size of the base who agree with those positions, you can’t lose support by being more vocal and principled, you can only gain support by appealing to voters who have dropped off the bandwagon, or to those who might appreciate the sheer novelty of a Canadian politician saying what he really thinks (from a non-leftist perspective, that is).
This concept that we will sneak in to majority government and then expose the “real” Harper is probably going to disappoint some of you, if we get the chance to test it out, because I think what we see now is the real Harper, and he’s a guy who does not seem to have a very strong foundation in these critical areas — granted, he’s strong on the economy, but that’s for the finance minister not the prime minister.
I take the contrarian view (around here) then, that we need a brave man, we need a cave man — we need somebody who can lead a counter-revolution, not wait patiently inside 24 Sussex Drive hoping there might be one by some happy accident of fate.
Peter, your analysis of PMSH is too simple. He is a very deep thinker, he has kicked the CBC in the teeth and told them to go get dentures. Their bite on his a$$ is only as good as their denture cream. They know it and are mad as a three year old with her ice cream cone on the hot pavement on an August summer day! He has taken away their entitled entitlements and they can’t do a thing about it.
I don’t think PM Harper is short on the gravity end of his convictions and plans. It is the sheeple with whom he has to spoon feed the truth of change and decency which are the bitter pill of sobriety that the teat-suckers are so reluctant to swallow.
He has to turn a super tanker around in a very large worldwide storm. We, the armchair critics, can give all the solutions we want from the sidelines without any consequences, he makes a move and the whole country is either praising or throwing stones. Not a position of envy. I tip my hat to the PM!!!
The CBC has a poll on Harper today.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/pointofview/2011/01/stephen-harper-what-do-you-think-of-his-performance-as-prime-minister.html
Peter O’Donnell: When you say, ” … we need a brave man, we need a cave man …” you may be right, but Canadians don’t take kindly to brave cave men. We are ever so timid, much to our disadvantage.
I’m with begley, glacierman, and Fred. Prime Minister Harper, by necessity, has had to creep up on the complacent, snoring beast to get his agenda through — and he’s only managed some of it. Any sudden or bold movement — heck, even the smallest disturbance — rouses and riles the snakes and komodo dragons across the aisle and their media accomplices.
If PMSH gets a majority and I’m wrong about him then tackling the CBC and the CHRCs, just two examples of institutions that need to be dramatically curbed or scrubbed altogether, I’ll hold his feet to the fire.
Right now, discretion is the better part of valour — and the patience of Job, which the prime minister, fortunately, seems to have. His detractors in the Opposition, both elected and unelected, aka the media, are vicious, lying bullies.
The G&M also has a poll on Harper, 65% say he’s done a terrible job as PM.
But 99% of the people I know think the G&M is a left wing rag not worth reading,so there ya go.
Stephen Harper,no matter what complaints we may have about the man, he’s so much better than the alternatives,SO MUCH BETTER.
Repeat this to yourself: Prime Minister Ignatieff.
‘The CBC has a poll on Harper today’
Thanks for pointing that out custom10 – done.
PMSH probably the best PM in the last 50 years. Imagine what he could do with a majority!
Re that poll, I’m glad they added the “this is not scientific” tagline. What do you expect from a group of Hate-Everyone-Right-of-Libby-Davies neanderthals? That poll is like hanging a piece of meat above a pit of starving dogs and asking this poll question: “Are you a vegetarian?”
@custom10 That CBC poll needed some help so I helped it 😉
dmorris: Link please to the poll. I haven’t been able to locate it. Thanks.
“The CBC has a poll on Harper today.”
I voted. Considering that his strongly disaprrove “ratting” is at 47%, when I voted, I guess the commies are feeling their oats. I suspect that every CBC, CTV, TO Star, CUPE, PSAC, CAW and assorted union Big Government Nanny Stater had to post their vote before they left on Friday, say 2:15 pm, or get fired.
Regarding the future of Canadian politics . . . I’ve long felt that pundits in the mainstream media are severely mathematically challenged. Given the current makeup of the country and that we have 4 major parties, it’s actually quite amazing that any party has even come close to a majority. Until the Bloc Quebecois fades away, it’ll be really, really hard for anyone to achieve a majority gov’t. Yet, if you listen to the narrative of the MSM, you’d think that any day now the Liberals are going to achieve just that.
There would have to be some major fracture within the Conservative Party. I have little doubt that J. Taber, L. McQuaig, & J. Simpson each pray for this at little shrines set up in their closets, but short of Voodoo Magic doing the job, how do they expect the successor to Iggy (and rest assured, there WILL be one after the next election) to get it done?
Anybody! Link to the poll, please, at the Probe and Fail.

Direct link to CBC Poll on Stephen Harper
Thanks, AS. I guess if it’s a CBC poll, I won’t be able to find it at the Globe and Mail site!
Does anyone have a link to the poll run by the G&M yesterday? I’ve looked everywhere and it seems to be down — either that, or my Luddite tendencies have hampered my search … 😉
Mop and Pail poll, scroll down about a third of the way through the article (which in itself is an interesting read).
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/ottawa-notebook/mulroneys-advice-to-harper-do-something-big/article1879648/
Well when you consider that only extreme leftists go to the CBC website I’m surprised that only 47% are opposed. One would think it would be closer to 98% opposed and 2% undecided.
Patience is a virtue. 5 years of minority government is quite the feat, especially in this country, and especially for a conservative.
Best PM in my lifetime.
PS, I’m a fan of Mises & Hayek.
Joe; when poofters get angry they turn to the CBC polls for comfort and comments, just like a sympathy letter from Sheldon on TV.
Peter O’Donnell (and batb)- “…we need a brave man, we need a cave man…”
Like, for instance??:

Thanks, Colin from Mission B.C.. What a load of rubbish that 63% of those who responded to the G&M poll said PMSH was “unworthy of office.”
All this poll proves is how disconnected from reality G&M readers are or that there’s been a leftard assault on the poll.
What Ron said. Prime Minister Harper is the “best PM in my lifetime.”
Snagglepuss, that song takes me way back! 😉
I second Batb’s motion at 1:19.
It appears that those 63% of the Globe voters who said PMSH was “unworthy of office” would most likely prefer Hugo Chavez.
The next election could be interesting as the polls seem to be flat lined.
Mr. Harper reminds me of my former Chief Engineer
a canny operator with a good vision, handcuffed by bs politics
I guess you all know who I’m voting for, I just wish my local MP wasn’t such a #@#!
Partisan politics though……
[d]
Given that the CBC poll is, after all, a CBC poll, it would be quite revealing if they asked folks who vote on the poll how they voted in the last election.
My guess would be 75% Liberal/NDP. That would about say it all, no?
o’donnell is an enthusiast….NOT any kind of tactician or strategic thinker……
and so obviously patently impatient and imprudent regarding politics and the long game.
i dessay warren kinsella has more sense of Canadian history and the pragmatic than o’donnell…and both of them light years less than PMSH.
I keep hearing that Harper is ‘weaning’ us off that state and that The Majority (TM) is right around the corner, as it has been for a half-decade. To the tools folks who keep saying this I ask: do you have a shred of evidence? Are you able to interface with reality? Can you reason? ARE YOU ON CRACK?!?! I’m sorry if this is elitist sounding but you see I’m a university student I can’t help it.
Well having read that last bit of tripe is beyond debate that libertariansaresmarter is not a libertarian. No one who posted that piece of nonsense could be smart.
@Joe: I take it your answers were no, no, no, and…?
As long as the Bloc exists, “majority” for any party will be nothing but a pipe dream. There are some days that I’d like to re-ignite the Western separatist movement and get ‘er done this time.
fakelibertariansarestupid:
Um, exactly where is it that you “keep hearing” that “Harper is weaning us off the nanny state”? Not here. Where do you keep hearing that a majority is around the corner? Not here. There are plenty of posts wishing that those were true, but not so many that say such things are actually happening. In fact, if your reading comprehension skills exceeded that of a third grader, you’d have noticed a great many people here chiding Harper for not moving faster and more boldly.
So, if it’s not too much trouble, why don’t you address your ridiculous questions to people who’ve actually posted those assertions instead of using the lazy, vacuous, and blanket catch-all “I keep hearing”?
As far as the original post goes, why do people have to keep positing these false dichotomies, as if one could only be alleged serial felon Conrad Black-style Conservatives, or satirical economic columnist Terence Corcoran-style Conservatives? Why can’t one be a small government Conservative who understands the realities of minority government, the realities of the current economic environment (which is not just a failure of the banking system or a recession; it’s the end of an era where people with a high school education – which includes most university degrees these days – could aspire to the middle class), and, as others have pointed out, that you can’t turn a supertanker on a dime? Harper is doing what he can. I’m sure he’d like to do more, and do it more quickly. But, in the absence of a single compelling issue that might provide a majority, he can’t afford to force an election, and for all the reasons pointed out repeatedly, not one of the opposition parties wants or can afford an election either. So it’s minority for a while. If we’re lucky, Ontario will kick out McGuinty in the meantime, and maybe federal electoral prospects will pick up. But that’s wishful thinking, not a prediction.
Well-spoken, KevinB, totally unlike the absolutely ridiculous and mendacious drivel coming from the computer of libertariansaresmart. S/he proves every time s/he posts the exact opposite.
Kevin, you are entirely right. We’ve been over this ground so much I’m getting thoroughly bored with it. What too many here do not understand is that politics is the Art of the Possible. You referred to wishful thinking. Well that’s exactly what “getting in the face of liberal elites”, “engaging in battle” and other high-flown, empty rhetoric is.
The simple political fact in Canada is that the Liberal Party of Canada is and has been for nearly 100 years the default party of government. Since Wilfrid Laurier, Canadians have generally chosen to vote Liberal in federal elections, if they lack any strong motivation to vote elsewhere. Throughout the 20th C., Conservative governments were elected only in times of considerable upheaval and were usually quickly expunged after.
Are some of you insane? Do you expect a century of Canadian political history to be overturned overnight? Do any of you understand that you catch flies with honey, not vinegar? Even after the Tories get a majority government, IF they get a majority government, they will still have to move relatively cautiously. Otherwise like John Diefenbaker, they will be a one term majority wonder. Or like Brian Mulroney be hated and vilified two decades after the fact.
So get used to it, people. If you want to achieve a fundamental change in the political direction of Canada you’re in for the LONG haul.
