Don Cherry vs. The Pinkos

A newly formed Vancouver-based group is challenging Don Cherry to a debate on Coach’s Corner to offset criticism that the fiery commentator is using Hockey Night in Canada to promote militarism and the war in Afghanistan.

Apparently it’s an outrage to have even one conservative on the CBC speaking unopposed – mostly about hockey – for five minutes a week.

Hockey Fans for Peace plans to rally outside the HNIC broadcast of Saturday night’s Vancouver Canucks game against the Detroit Red Wings at Rogers Arena in Vancouver to make the point that hockey fans have the democratic right to speak out against the war in Afghanistan.

Spokesman Kimball Cariou said Wednesday the group is calling on the CBC “to either stop the promotion of militarism during hockey broadcasts, or else to allow one of its members to debate Cherry during an upcoming Coach’s Corner.”

Cariou was the Communist Party of Canada candidate for Vancouver Kingsway in the 2006 federal election.

  1. I wouldn’t give those pinkos the time of day. No one is stopping them from speaking out against the war, they don’t actually have any privileges on Hockey Night in Canada, Don Cherry does.
Let them find their own venue where they can howl at their luna.
CBC should pay Cherry extra for the great service he does in mentioning the fallen soldier on air. I see it as a value added feature.

  2. Sorry to Bogart this string, but I think the commies in question should be directing their whining to their politicians. Last time I heard, Don Cherry doesn’t quite have the power to bring home the troops. I believe Ottawa has some influence in that matter.

thank goodness the compassionate, intellectual left is always there
to cool off all that thuggish conservative rhetoric…
“Too bad Iggy’s not coming to your riding, eh? You could
Glock him but good, just for being against the repeal of
    the machine gun registry.”

  4. First of all, no. Hockey talk and political talk are in different arenas (figurative ones, not the literal ones).
Secondly, our troops are doing a fine job.
Thirdly, one would see Don Cherry destroy these mental midgets with the pure force of his personality. Is that a fair fight? I know leftists enjoy playing dirty but should one stoop to that level?

  5. Just ignore them – they’re unimportant and don’t deserve a platform of any kind.
I have to say that Uncle Don dressed unusually acceptable this past Saturday. Still had the big collar of course, but in place of an old lady’s bedspread was a classy suit of blue pinstripe with coordinating striped blue shirt. The man looked pretty classy, somewhat Bay Street-ish, but in a good way.

  6. Kimball Cariou speaks for 162 people in the Vancouver area, and he may be the editor of this newspaper:
    http://www.peoplesvoice.ca/
He seems to be, for “the people”..
If it’s ok for politics and sports to mix outside of the odd skating / photo opportunity, I’d like to see Georges St. Pierre fight him in a cage. But, that’s just me. uff, Kimball, not Don Cherry!

  7. We in BC are only doomed if we stand by and allow such nonsense. Much the same as the rest of the country.
Look what happens when folks stand by and do nothing in places like Caledonia. We should have been howling from the rooftops from coast to coast with that travesty. That complete outrage and assault on our freedom. The people of Caledonia have been greviously affronted. It was done to them , then it was done to us as Canadians. Same with these communist vermin insisting on the right to ‘debate’ Don Cherry because he reveres and supports our troops.
Our troops are there for us. We should not tolerate this kind of nonsense from anyone, anywhere. Nor should we put up with the CBC and their shilling for the libs with our money.
When WILL we stop complaining and start demanding. Often and in large numbers.
I am tired of the twits and ignorant of both Canada and the US having the ‘say’ online and on television. IF we let them they will bulldoze us into putting up with all this nonsense.
In large measure, we already allow far too much . These libs get away with ‘determining’ the voice of the country, largely unchallenged.
Time we challenged and hard. Loud. And often.
We want and need SunTV but we can vocalize a lot on our own, just as Kathy, Kate, Mark and Ezra do all day long and at huge personal expense.
British Columbia is in a pickle because the idiots have had control of the airwaves for far too long over the HST and recall initiatives ( the first of which is not going too well in Gordon Head)Thank God!-
Vander Zalm and his failed political hacks have been successful duping the ignorant over the HST.
Once more and more of the facts come out, a lot of people are outraged they did not ‘know’ more about it before they signed the petition. ( Why one would not undertake to educate onself before running with the herd to throw themselves off the cliff by signing that thing, I cannot fathom)
One gentleman on the radio recently said he was ‘duped’ into signing twice and is now up for a $5000 fine from Elections BC. … hmmmm.. should he not have thought more carefully when they were wheedling him to sign twice? …..
The recall campaign in Gordon Head is not going well because people see through the effort to overturn an election and know that a recall is not to be used for this purpose.
Most there in that riding feel that if their MLA had done something wrong, it would be up to them to take measures.
As it is, having a pool of outsiders trying to upset the process they have already determined in the last election is not sitting well with those whose job it is to decide if they want to sign this thing to get rid of Ida Chong, whose only crime it seems is that she is a BC Liberal MLA.
Mr. Vander Zalm had to resign as premier in disgrace and his co-horts are a bunch of ne’er do wells who cannot seem to find a party that fits their ambitions. These are not the kind of people I want determining political decisions and using the populace as sheep being herded into decisions that suit them and not the well being of British Columbians.
As for Mr. Don Cherry , I see his comments regarding hockey and our troops as the only bright spot on a network dedicated to making sure the citizens of Canada continue to be led around by the nose to suit their political agenda and ambitions, AND have us pay for the privilege.
Frankly, if it were not for the aspect of giving the communists a platform, I would dearly love to see Don tear these bozos apart.

  8. Geeze.. Our town just attracts useful idiots by the score.. Attracted by our fool of a mayor , with his love of the homeless, druggies, chickens, home for homeless chickens, if you can believe that one, bike lanes, chicken only lanes, just kidding on that one.. City of no fun, nanny town..

  9. The right to speak. Didn’t HRC say that was an American right?
The right to not listen isn’t enshrined anywhere but in my mind but I like it.
All you need is one reply sign, ‘Isn’t Your Mother Proud.’ Oughta do it.

  10. Don’t even ask me what I think of First Secretary Kimball Cariou.
Go Don, tell those left-wing pinkos what you really think.

  11. Cherry would do a verbal bombing run on them all till they run screaming, as their brains are microwaved by reality.
    JMO

  12. Shamrock at 11:51 PM: “Who would want to watch that?”
Exactly, but then when did CBC ever worry about whether anyone is watching?

  13. Just wanting some of Don’s popularity for himself. Right of centre gets 15 minutes on CBC ever week. Can’t he find an opening in the other 10,065 minutes!

  14. If anyone else in Metro Vancouver would like to join me this Saturday to photograph the Commies, just drop me a line via my blog. The game starts at 7pm PST so I figure I’d get down there about 5:30pm to catch these nutters doing their thing.

  15. You’d be weird too, if your mommy named you “Kimball”. Bet he’s never been to a hockey game in his life!

  16. Do it!
Have Don stand up and call them pinkos and bring Milbury in to call them pansies!
Then if Milbury would just beat the Cariou over the head with his own shoe. Then and only then would I believe there’s a God!

  17. Geeze.. Our town just attracts useful idiots by the score.. Attracted by our fool of a mayor , with his love of the homeless, druggies, chickens, home for homeless chickens, if you can believe that one, bike lanes, chicken only lanes, just kidding on that one.. City of no fun, nanny town..
That’s what we get when Soros money is involved. Tides Foundation.

  18. Heh. “Hockey Fans for Pece” my butt. I’m willing to bet that very few of them have ever laced on a pair of skates.
But even though it has been a couple of decades since I played in the juniors (never was good enough to be considered for the show), I would be willing to do a one on one with at least one of these asshats, and demonstate to them what hockey, and by extension, life is all about.
They would find themselves bruised and bloody…but that’s hockey…

  19. Who gives a crap what this commie thinks! Hey, Cariou if you don’t like Don Cherry and Coach’s Corner, don’t watch it dipshit. I’m not entirely sure why this A-hole is afforded a podium in the first place. Other than a misguided, insufferable, self importance, why do we care what he says?

  20. “Hockey Fans for Peace”
There is something profoundly wrong with that name. Makes as much sense as Kosher Hog Butchers.

  21. “Apparently it’s an outrage to have even one conservative on the CBC speaking unopposed – mostly about hockey – for five minutes a week.”
Sure, because if you asked every other CBC commentator they would claim they are neutral.
CBC will do it….trust me this will go to court.
and our courts will back the communist.
But, be honest you would all watch.

  22. I lived in Van for 5 years before leaving due to the insane cost of living there. Miss the ocean and the mountains but certainly not the people. Too many PC self absorbed lefties with no sense of humor running around.

  23. Well, at least there’s almost twice as many Libertarians as commies in that riding. I’m curious what Cariou’s views were on the Russian occupation of Afghanistan that created the current mess. Was he protesting the Russian invasion in 1980?

  24. Cariou’s debate strategy would no doubt involve taunting and baiting until Cherry gets angry and uses some politically-incorrect language as he has been known to do from time to time. Cariou can then proclaim that Cherry is a neanderthal and a warmonger.
Don Cherry has nothing to prove to these cretins and he should simply ignore them as everyone else does.
If the infantile fools wish to carry out their petulant little protest, have at it. It’s a free country.

  25. Cherry is an entertainers nothing more and I find that people who cling on every word he says as some gospel truth need to visit a shrink.

  26. In the contest between Don Cherry and the Pinkos, I back Don! We don’t need these dirt-bags interfering with our “Hockey Night in Canada” broadcasts. If the Pinkos want their own forum, why don’t they take whatever money they saved from their subsidies from Moscow and buy their own station and rail against P.M. Harper from there! If “Kimball the Commie” is unhappy living in Canada, he can always move to North Korea or Cuba, where his blather may be more appreciated by the powers that be! I am a patriot and make no apologies for it. If your heart is not in Canada, get your arse out!

  27. These commies are smart, they know they will get a voice/publicity if they protest through the CBC/Sherry instead of properly using the democratic channels through Government.
And the CBC will gladly comply and provide them a voice…
    Get rid of the CBC!!!

  28. loki, most likely Cariou’s views on the Russian occupation of Afghanistan would have been bringing soviet democracy to the people.
This comrade and his group of Bolsheviks are just looking for public exposure.

  29. This past Saturday,Cherry did a dedication to the Toronto cop who was killed in the line of duty by the nutcase that stole a snowplow and went berserk with it.
The Officer’s wife is left with a baby to raise by herself, while the bleeding hearts will pour sympathy allover the misguided “victim” who killed the husband and father.
So what in hell’s wrong with THAT,Mr.Cariou?
Cherry is the only Canadian “personality” to support our troops and cops, the rest usually support the perpetrators.
Like Abe said above, don’t give Cariou and his bunch of bottom feeders the time of day.

  30. If you ask me(and you didn’t), a bunch of commie pinkos protesting at a hockey game is just gay.

  31. The pink panty set just want a few minutes on TV.
I suggest background music be “Money for Nothing”.

  32. I think Cherry should accept the challenge…well as soon as David Suzuki debates Lord Muncton or other climate realist on ‘The Nature of Things’ or gives Mark Steyn a recurring role on ‘Little Mosque’

  33. If the pinkos really wanted to get their message out they should buy time on TSN. Go Grapes!

  34. Kimbol does not want to debate Cherry. He simply wants to be close enough to Don to dry hump his leg.

  35. They sound like your A typical sissy brigade who are hyjacking hockey to expand their “Commie Agenda”.

  36. Rob “If Kimball gets to debate Grapes on HNIC, then Ezra debates Suzuki on The Nature of Things.”
I like it. That is one of my favourite things, role reversal and watch the confusion and backpedaling. When in government one of my favourite sayings was, “What would business do and how would you deal with it?’ Different standards.

  37. “Hockey Fans for Peace”, cute but I doubt if a Taliban would go to the penalty box. Achmed, two minutes for roughing and a five minute misconduct for IED.

  38. “Cariou was the Communist Party of Canada candidate for Vancouver Kingsway in the 2006 federal election. ”
We spent billions of dollars and untold lives deposing fascism from western political and governing systems. Our mistake was not seeing communism as the same threat to life and democracy as fascism was. Marxism/communism/anarchism/nihilism have no place in our culture or society. Why do we not do the right thing and outlaw it?
Look at the antisocial freaks it attracts.
