Edward Aczel is an office worker and part-time comedian who performs his comedy incorrectly. He reads from hand-held notes, doesn’t even vaguely attempt to amp up the crowd, draws elaborate and awkward attention to his inability to connect with the audience, and….uses charts. It’s quite funny. Here’s Edward Aczel in performance at the Edinburgh Festival.

Jay Solomon at the WSJ:
“Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, adopting a tone reminiscent of the Bush administration, blasted Arab governments for stalled political change, warning that extremists were exploiting a lack of democracy to promote radical agendas across the Middle East.
“Mrs. Clinton, addressing a conference on democracy as she wrapped up a four-nation tour of the Persian Gulf region Thursday, said the situation is exacerbated by dwindling natural resources and the difficulty of the region’s large population of young people in finding jobs or channels through which to express their aspirations.
“If left unaddressed, such limitations could set the stage for more violence and political turmoil, she said.
“The secretary of state’s speech marks a contrast with the tone of the Obama administration so far. President Barack Obama has been criticized by democracy activists for not more aggressively pushing leaders in the Arab and Muslim world to pursue political openness…”

Years ago, on the Ed Sullivan show no less, I witnessed a similar performance by a magician. Things went wrong in all his tricks, which he tried to cover up unsuccessfully. It sounds dopey, but it was really quite funny.
Hilarious! My kind of funny!
Of course, the sophisticants would say he’s no Letterman or Bill Maher.
Absolutely! says I.

Yes Allen, Kahn possibly was one of the last classical liberal economists.
Today’s liberal economists have taken their training from Commissar Sokolnikov’s acolytes in the universities.
Excerpt from Monique Stuart’s “How the Right Will Lose The War”:
The right doesn’t have to play dirty like the left in order to succeed, but they have to play. As our president said, if we bring a knife to the fight, they’ll bring a gun. Well, I say to that, if they bring a gun then we’ll bring a flame thrower or a tank (Once again, let me reiterate, this is not an incitement to violence. Please, do not try to kill liberals with knives, guns, flame throwers, tanks or any other weapon. Please, don’t try killing people. Period.) If they want to keep ranting that this is about civil discourse, then we need to keep reminding them which side is uncivil. I don’t see Tea Parties burning Obama in effigy like we saw “peace activists” do to Bush for eight years.
It is the left that time and again projects their sins onto the right and the media and celebrities reinforce all of this. Too many members of the right are too scared to stand up and be made fun of because of what we believe. I would take it as a badge of honor to have the likes of Jon Stewart and other liberals hate me and try to marginalize me. That would mean I’m doing something right. Too bad too many on the right just don’t get this. Eff being invited to the cool kid party! There are always more dorks than cool kids. I would rather gather up my fellow ‘dorks’ and have my own party that the co-called cool kids aren’t invited to. I guess that’s the difference between a leader and a follower. I guess I’m just disappointed to realize that we have become a nation of followers.”

Just listening to Patrick Moore live on QR77 – he’s one of the founders of Greenpeace, from UBC, who abandoned the organization because he said he was the only scientist on the board, and the organization took on weird battles. He’s in favour of nuclear power and selective genetically altered crops. He is a realist about oil as a fuel as well. I like most of what he says – not all – but most. Maybe the show will be archived after it plays live.
Strange. Years ago, I linked to Patrick Moore and not a peep/response of any kind.

The only thing that Patrick Moore said that really rubbed me the wrong way was “seal slaughter”. Don’t get me started . . . . .
Thank-you for link to Monique Stuart, EBD. Monique lays out the battle plan and the success of the left Progressive thinkers in a very clear essay. I have often wondered why common sense people with a desire to be independent farmers/store owners/ artists etc. are so easy to deflate when they are pounced upon by some fanatic who demands that they ‘give back’. The left, with it’s shrill sobbing ‘poor widdle moi’ stories make limp spaghetti out of ardent Conservatives. The left NEVER ‘give back’, they take and demand more until free enterprise is on it’s knees; then the left laugh and grab all the builder’s assets at bargain basement prices. New minted land/business owners are not ‘nice’ to any new employees because they want to keep the workers in a vice grip so that they can’t pull the same punches that the ‘new’ employer did when he/she was agitating for ‘workers’. There is a petri dish example of this scenario right here in Yukon, Canada.
The left has no sense of fair play because of their belief system. Monique takes the right to task for rolling over when they are winning to make the sniveling whiners ‘feel better’ – the “I’m O.K., you’re O.K” mime. A person should never let those greedy losers get a leg up off the floor when they are pinned down by their own greedy, envious natures. Keep them pinned down infinitely – let them wait for their intrepid pals to charge over the hill on their pink ponies; take the safety bars off the Carosels and the ponies won’t have riders.
Great read.

“China-style dictatorship of climatologists”
“NASA’s Hansen prefers rule by decree to fight ‘global warming'”
“November’s election made it quite clear that the people of the United States do not want to radically change our society in the name of global warming. Pretty much every close House race went to the Republicans, while the Democrats won all the Senate squeakers. The difference? The House on June 26, 2009, passed a bill limiting carbon-dioxide emissions and getting into just about every aspect of our lives. The Senate did nothing of the sort.
The nation’s most prominent publicly funded climatologist is officially angry about this, blaming democracy and citing the Chinese government as the “best hope” to save the world from global warming. He also wants an economic boycott of the U.S. sufficient to bend us to China’s will.
NASA laboratory head James Hansen’s anti-democracy rants were published while he was on a November junket in China, but they didn’t get much attention until recently. On Jan. 12, the hyperprolific blogger Marc Morano put them on his Climate Depot site, and within hours, the post went viral. In a former life, Mr. Morano was chief global-warming researcher for Sen. James M. Inhofe, Oklahoma Republican.
According to Mr. Hansen, compared to China, we are “the barbarians” with a “fossil-money- ‘democracy’ that now rules the roost,” making it impossible to legislate effectively on climate change. Unlike us, the Chinese are enlightened, unfettered by pesky elections. Here’s what he blogged on Nov. 24:
“I have the impression that Chinese leadership takes a long view, perhaps because of the long history of their culture, in contrast to the West with its short election cycles. At the same time, China has the capacity to implement policy decisions rapidly. The leaders seem to seek the best technical information and do not brand as a hoax that which is inconvenient.”
Has this guy ever heard of the Gang of Four? Or the Cultural Revolution, which killed those who were inconvenient? Or the Great Leap Forward, which used the best technical information to determine that a steel mill in every backyard was a good idea?
Mr. Hansen has another idea to circumvent our democracy. Because Congress is not likely to pass any legislation making carbon-based energy prohibitively expensive, he proposed, in the South China Morning Post, that China lead a boycott of our economy:”

*Meet Mao Stlong:
“By 1966, Strong had moved up again in government. He became Director General of Canada’s External Aid. He also became President of Canada’s YMCA. Strong’s primary job was to deliver the foreign aid promised by Lester Pearson’s government. Rather than hire a staff, Strong contracted with a Quebec-based engineering firm called SNC-Lavalin, to supply “technical facilities” with the proviso that the firm would hire only those individuals approved by Strong. External Aid was transformed from a one-man operation to the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) in 1968, which Strong headed. His mentor, Lester Pearson, created another institution called the International Development Research Center (IDRC). The IDRC was a quasi-government agency that had unique authority to receive charitable donations — and issue tax deductible certificates — and give money directly to individuals, governments, and private organizations. Strong became its head in 1970.
Through his creation and direction of CIDA, Strong controlled the implementation of aid programs on the ground — including who was hired to do the work, and through the newly created IDRC, Strong controlled the issuance of tax deductible certificates and the distrubution of both private foundation money as well as government money. He was in the perfect position to make many friends around the world. Dewar describes the arrangement this way: “He had helped create a federally funded but semi-private intelligence/influence network that could have impacts both in Canada and abroad.”[6]”

“Cold Will Hold in East and Plains through Mid-February”
“While we are in the heart of winter, many residents from the Plains into the East are sick of the cold, as evidenced from feedback on our AccuWeather.com Facebook page.
There has been a lack of brief warm spells people can often look forward to during midwinter, and it looks like the cold will hold strong through at least mid-February.
Unlike December, which was coldest compared to normal in the Southeast, the cold air on the way through the middle of next month is expected to be most extreme overall in the Northeast. The upcoming cold is likely to result in higher heating bills for many, as people crank up their thermostats.
A healthy snowcover in place from the northern Plains into the Northeast will act to intensify each cold air outbreak into the region.”

beagle you do realize that MLK was a republican don’t you? Like almost all that seek true liberation he was right wing. Most of his detractors were liberal Democrats as is to be expected as they just want to keep everyone down on the reservation.
Beagle, Martin Luther King was vehemently opposed by the Democrats in power and assassinated by a like-minded individual. In 40 years you’ll be saying Sarah Palin was a Democrat.
And just to pile on here, the only big name Dem involved in the passing of the Civil Rights laws that Dr. King so championed was LBJ. It was only with the help of the GOP in congress that LBJ was able to out play Dems like Albert Gore, Al’s papa and Robert Byrd and get those laws passed.
today in white house history:
Jan 18 1991
The United States admits that the CIA paid Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega over $300,000 during his career as undercover narc.
p.s.:
“beagle you do realize that MLK was a republican don’t you?”
no I didn’t. but I didn’t say he was a democrat either. democrats had a LOT of support in the south and we all know what those ramifications were regarding the timing of meaningful civil rights action.
beagle, there’s a nice write-up on Ace of Spades about MLK – well worth a read, and the general tone is “nobody’s perfect, and this guy was pretty awesome”. Cheers.
beagle – it’s January 18th @ 1129 specifically. I must admit I try to emulate King as much as possible when debating politics. Some people get pretty fired up, and you wouldn’t believe how people slander me at the HuffPo when I’m over there. But I try as much as possible to keep calm and rational, whilst quietly taking their rhetorical blows. It’s nowhere even near what King faced of course, believe me I understand that, and the comparison pales in the glare of reality. But if I find it hard to sit there and take the hate and malevolence, it gives me a sense of what this guy and his followers did being subject to real insults, beatings, and ultimately murders.
Comments at the CBC’s website coverage of Sgt Russell’s funeral running about like what you would expect…….Not all of course, but a disturbing (at least to any rational human being) amount.
My first reaction was negative:as a libertarian, the news that he had a 100% success rate as a prosecutor made me uneasy.
Then he said “wait til I’m really pissed” in a news conference, and I said, “heh!”.
And I liked him.
Liked him even more when he put a teacher’s union in its place and began cutting government expenses.
THEN, he praised Obama’s Arizona campaign-memorial complete with cool Ts.
Not good.
THEN, he suggested that Sarah Palin (her attempt to staunch the blool libel) should be “less scripted” while evidently forgetting about Obama’s teleprompters which he uses even in an elementary classroom
And I started to dislike him. Distrust him.
And now I read that Chris Christie’s selling out to the Islamists.
In hindsight, we should all remember that Darth Vader was the Good Guy.

I was shocked. Then I remembered my main take-away from Efraim Karsh’s superb book, Islamic Imperialism: A History, namely that Islam could not not have expanded as it did without the active collusion of the secular and religious elites. Clearly, that’s what happened with the Eurabia project and that’s what’s happening here.

the analogy I like to use regarding the Left, is the ‘bad guy’ wrestler who’s been beating your a$$ for ten minutes with a chair who then falls to his knees and begs for “mercy” once the tables have turned. Most often the ‘good guy’ is fooled by the plea and is then clobbered again (usually with a foreign object) when the ‘good guy’ lets his guard down.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — An all-but-overlooked provision of the health reform law is threatening to swamp U.S. businesses with a flood of new tax paperwork.
Section 9006 of the health care bill — just a few lines buried in the 2,409-page document — mandates that beginning in 2012 all companies will have to issue 1099 tax forms not just to contract workers but to any individual or corporation from which they buy more than $600 in goods or services in a tax year.

(Reuters) – President Barack Obama on Tuesday ordered a government-wide review of regulations, both old and new, in a broad push to curtail rules that retard job creation and economic growth.
In a move to improve his relations with the business community, Obama ordered government agencies to consider the costs of regulations, maximize public input in their development, ensure they are underpinned by science, and consider their impact on small businesses.
Some rules place “unreasonable burdens on business — burdens that have stifled innovation and have had a chilling effect on growth and jobs,” Obama said in an op-ed piece in the Wall Street Journal in which he unveiled his plans.
Obama said he would require that in the future, government agencies “ensure that regulations protect our safety, health and environment while promoting economic growth.”
