Take a Hall Full of Narcissists

… add Ricky Gervais … what could possibly go wrong?

The 68th annual Golden Globes veered into Cluedo territory last night as the event’s host went missing for nearly an hour. Ricky Gervais’s absence from the stage, following an opening monologue that drew more gasps than laughs, led excited observers to speculate that the British comic may have been collared backstage and fired … or worse.

Update:

When someone comes along and throws a spanner through that fantasy, like a Tunisian rioter breaking the windows in a dictator’s villa, there was bound to be trepidation.

  1. I thought he was delightfully irreverent to a group of ego maniacs who take themselves and their profession far too seriously. They are actors not scientists, doctors or anything useful, they are in show biz.
When they dabble in politics we see how vapid they really are.
I also think most of what he said was true or very close.

  2. You could tell that a lot of the celebs weren’t sure whether they should laugh or not. I found the bit very funny. Reminded me of “Extras” and his “Out of England” standup.

  3. Gawd, I sat through that whole thing ’cause it was the only thing on (gave up my cable subscription a while back — rabbit ears!).
Terrible. Hollywood multi-millionaire crack heads eulogizing other multi-millionaire crack heads for movies eulogizing such endearing historical figures such as “Doctor Death” (Kevorkian) and “Carlos the Jackal” (the mass-murderer South-American/Palestinian terrorist Carlos Ramirez Sanchez).
    Lovely.

  4. Good for Ricky Gervais, Hollywood’s huge ego needs to be deflated more regularly. It is funny to see the most dysfunctional profession in the world get a taste of its own medicine.
Not all of them are uptight ninnies. From the Daily Mail:
“But not everyone took offence to Gervais’s wisecracks and at one point, Alec Baldwin was seen wiping a tear from his eye as he laughed along from the audience, while Robert De Niro was in stitches of laughter.”

  5. I’m just upset that “The King’s Speech” did not get all the awards it truly deserved. There was the typical nod to gays on screen (yes, there was). Does anyone need any further proof that awards are political?
Some people can’t take a jab at themselves, I guess.

  6. I recently watched a Ricky Gervais movie On DVD because I couldn’t find anything that looked any good. It was called “Cemetery Junction” After the place where it happens. I really enjoyed it. Check it out if you get the chance.

  7. Watching the crowd, they seemed nervous. They didn’t know whether to laugh or be insulted as they could have been the next ones in the cross hairs.
The mocking was perfect! So British, too bad it has gone to such depths in order to make them all “appear” to be shocked. This on public airwaves…pity!

  8. “the event’s host went missing for nearly an hour”
Robert W. (Vancouver) at 4:11 PM: “But he lashed out at others and received a big spanking! LOL”
Fred at 4:13 PM: “he really screwed the pooch when he mocked the scientologists.”
    =======================
My hunch is they had to find Tom Cruise to deliver the spanking. That’s why it took so long.

  9. Only watched for about an hour. I aslo don’t have cable and it was the only thing on.
Thought Gervais was quite funny. The only time he got a little over the line was with Robert Downy who actually has recovered and seems to be doing very well. Downy took it very well and went on to do a very funny bit himself.
My favourite part was watching all the nervous half-smiles and open mouthed gapes from the tinseltown trash oh and the Hugh Hefner bit- cringe inducing yes- but funny.

  10. Cool! Now I love Ricky Gervais.
I hope Tom Cruise doesn’t destroy him. Because Tom’s a scientologist, you know. NTTAWWT.

  11. Yeah, Black Mamba, Tom’s a Scientologist!!! Oh! Oh! Oh!
‘Watched Downton Abbey, beginning at 9:00 on WNED, but enjoyed Gervais taking the mickey out of the Hollywood crowd for an hour. ‘Funniest, like others have mentioned, was watching their not knowing how they should respond: We can say these things … but, but, but, who does this Brit prick think he is?
    Rickey Gervais is THE BEST!

  12. I really enjoyed that – and Black Mamba, sadly, it took me only a millisecond to figure out that acronym, because I use it a lot in various conversations.

  13. Hmmm. Comparing this with the gales of laughter elicited by Wanda Sykes – including laughter from the sitting President of the United States – when she accused Rush Limbaugh of ‘treason’ and ‘joked’ that she’d like to see Limbuagh’s kidneys fail.
There was no nervous hesitation in the laughter then.

  14. A talentless poseur. The original “Office” on Brit TV was as funny as watching paint dry. He’s as funny as a wet haddock, and deserves deep, deep obscurity from now on.

  15. The reference to the scientologist was actually for John Travolta, as he is now outed for his male rendezvous!! That was my take on the remark.
And Ricky had the whole gag thing right about Hugh!

  16. If you listen to Gervais’s comments re Scientologists, there’s a plural reference. Uh huh.
    One John and one Tom?

  17. Hillarious. These hollywood twits do what they do, then expect everyone to accept that as normal? They deserve to be mocked.

  18. Rickey Gervais is THE BEST!
I agree batb. My daughter introduced The Office to me a few years ago and and bought me a DVD set of his Extras which we watched over the holidays.
Pace Patick B (is he havin’ a laff?), I find him to be a very gifted, inventive comic.
YES, the priceless aspect of that clip is that the gathered, despite all that ego and putative self assurance, really, really didn’t know how to take the cat. RG doesn’t do PC! I saw a terrific clip of Larry David (who is hilarious, but with whom I have “some issues”) AND RG somewhere. Fascinating discussion on theory of good comedy.

  19. Me No Dhimmi – it’s interesting that Larry David does the whole Comedy of Horrendously Awkward Social Embarassment and Humiliation schtick which has traditionally been so much a British thing, e.g. in the Office (I haven’t seen the British Office but I’ve read about it; I know the gist).

  20. Ricardo, Gawd, I sat through that whole thing ’cause it was the only thing on (gave up my cable subscription a while back — rabbit ears!).
You be da man…I couldn’t make it that long! What dribble…

  21. Hm. Less than a week ago, a liberal friend of mine opined on FB that she is “more classy” than Sarah Palin (in the wake of Palin’s statement on the Tuscon shootings).
Today, she praised Ricky Gervias’s tasteless and awkward monologue at the Golden Globes, proclaiming her love for the man…
I think my irony meter just broke.

  22. Many more than John and Tom, batb. You forgot to mention all the women who worship Xenu in lotus land. It’s hardly surprising that the greatest and most successful fraud of all time has had its greatest success in Hollywood.

  23. I say good for him. Not a person or group not left out of his mocking sitting right there. Bet they all wanted a trophy after he was Dextered.
    JMO

  24. i dunno…i thought gervais’ monologue was great fun…
did he lie anywhere in his bit?
    no..he didn …so what’s the fuss..
i can see this is traumatic for a lot of you folks that are ‘fans’…

  25. @ Richardo, I’m amazed at how many people are giving up cable and all the pap it delivers. I did the same thing about four or five years ago, and I put my TV in storage. I doubt it will ever be hooked up again. I hope Sun TV broadcasts some of it’s stuff over the net.
