Will There Be a Canadian Federal Election in 2011?

This video, shot 4 days ago, makes me wonder.
Do you think there will be one? If so, what’s your prediction about when it will occur and what issues do you think the Liberals will try to make the election about?
How will Michael Ignatieff answer this question, if asked: “If the Conservatives win the most seats but are unable to form a majority government, will you negotiate with the other parties to take control via a Coalition?”
Open Question: At 0:46 into the video, just after Ignatieff mentioned John Baird’s name, a man’s voice can distinctly be heard saying something. What words do you hear? (h/t Simon)

  1. Me thinks the only one who really wants an election is Buffo Bob. Iggy isn’t smart enough to realize that Bob is in the wings plotting his takeover from ‘within’. Seriously, to much water has passed under the bridge for Bob to have changed his political thought. Trying to be ‘pragmatic’ (contridiction in terms) he realized the NDP would never pull it off so he jumped to the Liberals who don’t stand for anything but power at all costs.
PMSH is a good enough student of history to have husbanded his forces for the inevitable campaign that will lead to majority. Great days are coming.
The idea of the West voting as a bloc is long overdue. Reform had it right all the time. The issues in Canada are economic and who subjugates who. This country has been run by the HB Co mentality for 400 years!

  2. You know, I think ct has it: as far as the Liberals go, it makes sense to work the election angle, if they want to supplant Iggy with B00b (after the miserable failure). Backfires if the Libs win, though, so B00b would have to sharpen the knives for some close-in wetwork. (aw, crap. more violent metaphors.)
@Paulie: Nice. That, my friends, is how satire is written.

  3. The Issue – Conservatives cut off taxpayer subsidies for all political parties, causing “the coalition” to go ballistic, while majority of voters love it
The Result – Conservative majority + another Liberal leadership change

  4. It seems the Liberals have few or no issues for an election campaign.
The Liberals may follow Frank Graves’ advice to piss off Alberta and steal from the NDP at the same time. Not sure what they would choose, oilsands and AGW are not currently hot issues — legalize pot? But pot-heads don’t vote. They can’t go too anti-American because of Iggy’s self-identification.
They could try a pro-union platform. Hopefully they enlist Buzz Hargrove’s help again.
The Liberal campaign will be defensive, likely trying not to be offensive (both meanings intended) other than cliches of mean-spirited Conservatives. They will be hard pressed to maintain what they have (Danny Williams gone, Ford doing well in Toronto, their platform of 2 years ago appearing to be from the carboniferous era). Yet with Sun tv soon challenging the Liberal’s CBC, this year my already be too late for the Liberals.
How many new Liberal MP’s were elected January 23, 06? They may want to wait out their 6 years to be eligible for pension.

  5. I think Harper has Iggy and the liberal in a very tight spot.
The Bloc and the Liberals get the majority of their cash from the $1.95 per vote subsidy.
Apolitical people that I talk to absolutely hate the idea of their tax dollars going to fund a separatist party.
Harper needs to frame the per vote subsidy issue as one of voting for Canada and the conservatives who will get rid of the subsidy to the separatists or voting for the liberals and the Bloc who wish to keep funding the separatists with our tax dollars.
It’s a live wire issue that will ensure huge voter turnout from those who are sick of the separatists and even sicker of the fact that they are forced to fund them.
    “Vote for Canada, vote Conservative.
Why vote for those who wish to give your tax dollars to a party dedicated to breaking up Canada?”
If Iggy doesn’t fight the cut to the subsidy the liberals go broke, if he does fight it he supports funding the separatists.

  6. Why vote for those who wish to give your tax dollars to a party dedicated to breaking up Canada?”

I liked your whole comment, but this is the “money” quote for me.
Not only do the Liberals want to give our tax dollars to the Bloc, but during AdScam they actually funnelled some of the taxes they stole to the Parti Quebecois and then claimed that the Liberal Party used the AdScam money to fight for Canadian Unity and prevent breakup!

  7. I’d imagine that stIffy resents his predecessor, who for all intensive purposes showed the Liberals’ hand shortly after the 08′ election. This shortsightedness, in a desperate attempt to wrestle power from the legally elected government will hang around the Liberal’s collective necks until they can legitimately contend for government on their own. And rightfully so. The question in my mind is: why didn’t the coalition members anticipate PMSH’s prorogation tactic? Or did they? It seems a little rich to me to believe that all participants in the coalition were surprised by prorogation. To me, it’s more likely that the Haughty Professor was gullible enough to be maneuvered into a high risk action, which would inevitably damage the Liberal party regardless of the coups success(or lack there of). There was absolutely no downside to the coalition for the Bloc nor the Dippers; but, it must have been obvious to all but Pion that such a coalition would cause untold damage to the Liberal brand. I’m dumbfounded by the fact that the Liberals would sign-away their credibility by crawling into bed with their avowed foes. Pure stupidity, but I digress.
Finally, I’ve spoken to many over the last few years that dislike PMSH and the Conservatives; but, their #1 political moral is “I will never vote NDP”. I hope that we can win these swing votes. This might be the final push the Conservatives need. That said, I am stuck in the echo chamber out west, and this anti-NDP sentiment might not exist elsewhere. Who knows.

  8. ‘The Issue – Conservatives cut off taxpayer subsidies for all political parties, causing “the coalition” to go ballistic, while majority of voters love it’
    Also, remember 08′!
The Liberals and the Dippers WILL find something else wrong with the budget. They will never admit to bringing down the government over political party welfare. If you recall, the ‘crisis’ was officially due to a lack of stimulus spending on part of the Conservatives. The opposition was loathe to pass a balanced budget, and demanded that for the sake of ‘keeping up appearances’ for the international community that the Conservatives spend more. Such will be the same in 11′. The opposition will never admit that they too are entitled to their entitlements.
One last thought… depending on the timing of the next election, the new news channel from Sun Media might have a part to play in determining the narrative of the up-coming election. One might also think that it is in the best interest of the Liberals, the Dippers and the Bloc to put this election behind them before the Sun Media channel has its legs under themselves. Just musing here.

  9. As things stand right now, I don’t think there will be an election this year. There are several reasons I think that way, some are:
    + polling continues to show the CPC in solid minority territory;
    + PMSH has significantly enhanced his personal standing with Canadians, other leaders have not;
+ the only issues the opposition have are either pork barreling or social spending.
While it’s a guess, I think that the CPC would jump at an election regardless of the official position — another reason for the opposition to shy away. We’re going to continue to be subjected to the “scandal of the week” in hopes that they can get something to stick.

  10. Dont care if you love him or hate him You dont callout for someone to be Killed.

Well Bryant, Liberal SCOTT REID who appears regularly on Solomon show also said the exact words “KILL HIM’ and other terrible things about the PM.
I guess M Ignatieff wants canada to be like Europe and the NDP and Bloc(liberals’ coalition partners want Canada to be like Greece.

  11. WalterF: “If [Iggy] doesn’t do well, the Liberal poliburo will replace him with Rae by the time Canadians wake up the next morning.”
Baby Point socialist Bob give-away/waste-taxpayers’-money-while-living-high-off-the-hog-far-from-the-madding-crowd Rae is salivating stage left to usurp his “friend” Iggy’s position at centre stage playing the part (badly, as it turns out) of Leader of the Opposition.
Rae may be the only one who benefits from an election at this point. It’s clear that Ignatieff has lost any pizazz he (n)ever had and that things aren’t looking up for the LPC. Rae, however, would just love to take over the Librano brand, so Iggy’s unpopularity plays right into his hands.
Prime Minister Harper has said many times, however, that Canadians don’t want an election, so with that in mind, I’m thinking no election till 2012.
But, who knows, in this crazy deranged dominion?

  12. Check out the CPC Truth Ads, the Conservatives responding to the Ignatieff Election Threat:
    http://www.conservative.ca/multimedia/our_tv_ads/conservatives_respond_to_ignatieff_election_threat
    They’re all 30-second zingers:
    Ignatieff Coalition
    Ignatieff Taxes
    Ignatieff Canada
    Ignatieff America
There’s one about the CPC and PMSH’s accomplishments, “Rising to the Challenge,” which runs a full minute — that’s how much the Conservatives under Prime Minister Harper’s able leadership have accomplished!
    And one called “NDP Ambition.”

  13. Re CPC Ignatieff ads, they begin with “Michael Ignatieff is back in Canada” and end, “Ignatieff: He didn’t come back for you.”
Brilliant — and not a word of a lie or even hyperbole. Michael Ignatieff: the gift that just keeps on giving.

  14. SUPPORT YOUR LIBERAL CANDIDATE
As a rule, I don’t pass along these “add your name” lists that appear in emails BUT this one is important. It has been circulating for months and has been sent to over 20 million people.
We don’t want to lose any names on the list so just hit forward and send it on. PLEASE keep it going!
To show your support for Michael Ignatieff please go to the end of the list and add your name.
    1. Mrs. Ignatieff
    2.

  15. Spring planting time on the prairies (so the Liberals don’t have to go out trying to woo the rural west vote) and probably some cockamamie reason like Harper’s Iron Fist micro-management, long census forms depriving the social fabric of Canadian society or war mongering with F-35s.
As an aside, will anyone have the cajoles to say that a National Leader’s Debate should only include leaders of truly national parties that actually have a member of parliament? Yeah, Gilles and Lizzy, I’m talking about you two.

  16. “I have no fear for our friend John. In Canada, unlike the U.S., we have civility and reasoned discourse. Moreover, unlike the U.S., we have gun control.”
    That was a facetious classic,Paulie,thanks!
I predict an election in October, the issues, the usual Liberal mountains out of molehills.
    Result: Conservatives: 145
    Liberals: 88
The rest to the Bloc and Dippers.
And Elizabeth May will once again fail in her bid for the Trough.

  17. I still think the Liberals will get rid of Iggy before the election. They only have so many kicks at the can.
Anyway the American health system seems to have done a pretty good job on Gabrielle Giffords.

  18. Like others I noticed the reference to internatioinal citizens, is this the ‘intellectual’ Liberals foray into a one world government.

  19. Nicole Timmerman
“Anyway the American health system seems to have done a pretty good job on Gabrielle Giffords.”
    Please elaborate.
Surely you’re not suggesting that Obamacare has done a good job taking care of Congresswoman Giffords. Are you? Surely you’re being sarcastic.
And SDA’ers, please don’t give NT a ‘clue’ as to the ridiculousness of the above statement.

  20. Indiana Homez – a little quick out of the gate, aren’t you?
    1) Obamacare is “operating” yet.
    2) Members of Congress/Senate have their own plan … they won’t be using Obamacare.

  21. ‘And SDA’ers, please don’t give NT a ‘clue’ as to the ridiculousness of the above statement.’
I guess you missed the part where I asked not to give a ‘clue’. You have now taken my/our opportunity to point this out after NT has responded.
    Thanks:(

  22. Indiana Homez – Sorry, I thought NT’s statement was reasonable … she said she didn’t see anything anything that needed fixing.
    Louise – err … that’s infinity squared.

  23. No prob:) now we can together laugh at the irony of your statement.
“Indiana Homez – a little quick out of the gate, aren’t you?”
    cheers

  24. anyways, you might be correct, that’s why I asked NT to ‘elaborate’. I don’t recall her being a troll, and I was likely too obtuse to catch the subtle nature of her comment.
    bygones

  25. CPC Truth Ads are quite to the point. Zingers is right. Thanks batb for posting this.
I suspect that there will be a federal election this spring, as the political ads that being aired, the active campaigning by the leaders and PM Harper throwing down the gauntlet of eliminating the per vote subsidy to the parties.

  26. Wow “kill him [John Baird]” called from an intelectual, compasionate, and oh so tolerent Liberal. But that probably some how makes it Sarah Palins fault in Libreal la la land.

  27. Was no one else retching as they listened to Iggy reciting his panegyric to Liberal nanny-state intrusions from the turdo era and before like medicare and the charter of “rights”? The “things that made our lives possible…Liberals understand this”. Yeccchhh!

  28. Kevin B
I know he is old but in the video he said he grew up in a Canada with unversla health care, public pensions and charter of rights, i.e. the Liberal meme that these things have ALWAYS existed instead of being recent programs.
Or maybe Iggy has only recently grown up.
