Will There Be a Canadian Federal Election in 2011?

This video, shot 4 days ago, makes me wonder.
Do you think there will be one? If so, what’s your prediction about when it will occur and what issues do you think the Liberals will try to make the election about?
How will Michael Ignatieff answer this question, if asked: “If the Conservatives win the most seats but are unable to form a majority government, will you negotiate with the other parties to take control via a Coalition?”
Open Question: At 0:46 into the video, just after Ignatieff mentioned John Baird’s name, a man’s voice can distinctly be heard saying something. What words do you hear? (h/t Simon)

  1. Aside from political issues, it’s clear that the Liberals are going to attempt to paint the Conservatives as being equivalent to the American conservative movement
Witness Bob Rae on today’s Question Period (CTV) in replying to the Conservative Party commentator as going back to speak with his “fellow Tea Party members”.
In the wake of last Saturday’s events, it’s clear that he’s attempting to use it as a smear. Typical Liberal. Typical Bob Rae.

  2. Last time it was global warming, carbon tax and raising gst to 9 percent.
None of these this time, but it will be about sucking more money out of the West for Ontario and Quebec.
The Liberals will not have Danny’s ABC bonus this time around.

  3. The NDP and the Bloc must be the only ones who want one. I’d put the odds of a conservative majority around 50%; and the odds of a Liberal minority around 10%, and 1% chance of a Liberal majority.
What polling figures are the liberal strategists seeing? Certainly they might do very well in urban ridings, but with their stances on gun control, I can’t see them wrestling more than half a dozen rural ridings from the conservatives. So realistically, best case scenario for the Libs is a weaker Conservative minority.
It’s hard to judge the NDP, but an election could turn them into a fringe party, as I could see quite a lot of strategic NDP voters moving to the libs (or vice versa depending on the riding). But again, I can’t see them wrestling power from Harper.
Then, there is the wild card. How many voters will vote conservative primarily because they’re tired of several years of minority government, and just want some political stability for more than 3 years?
Finally, the media. How many voters will vote according to what the MSM advises? How many will actually research party platforms?
Barring a major error by one of the 2 leaders, I feel these 3 issues – unrelated to any party platform – will end up deciding the next election. 1. Left voters voting strategically to defeat the conservative candidate. 2. Voters tired of monority government 3. # voters influenced by MSM.
Results will likely be very similar to 2 years ago, which is what no one wants – except the Bloc & NDP.

  4. The issue: long form census
    The date: June
The result: 20 percent drop in votes for Liberals and NDP

  5. How many new MPs are coming up on the ‘six years and fat pension for life’ deadline?
I wonder if they want to rock the boat?

  6. Quite a number of years ago at the same time ND Bob Rae was Premier in Ontario, the Toronto Sun featured Barbra Amiel as a columnist.
Today Liberal Bob Rae smear Conservatives with “Tea Party” innuendo, it’s time to remind the public Amiel described Premier Rae as a “crypto-communist” while he was governing Ontario as a New Democrat.
The percipience of Barbara Amiel regarding Rae is astounding!

  7. I think it’s time for those on the right in Canada, that if they’re going to use the “Tea Party” as a reference to what they want in Canada, to start using the full name of the “Tea Party” that the left here so fear. That is, “Taxed Enough Already” / TEA.
and I doubt that John Baird is shaking in his boots from the Liberals, he’s won his past 2 elections by about 5000 votes.
Has anyone asked Iggy what his next 5 year plan is? How many more years is he going to sit and whine in opposition about the good old days of Liberal governance?

  8. Iggy’s polling too low to sanely consider forcing an election, which means there stands a good chance he will do just that.
If this happens I think the G20, F35s and Sun Media will be the left’s main targets.
As for how Iggnottief would answer the coalition question, I don’t think he will easily, but will squirm and weasel around it to the best of his ability. But, if he absolutely got pinned down and was forced to answer in some definite yes/no fashion – YES .. something like “… the liberal party will govern in accordance with the majority of Canadians who did not vote conservative..”
And the only reason I think Iggy would say YES now is that Harper preemptively suggested the contrary a few weeks ago in the media, saying that the liberals would deny forming a coalition every day of the campaign, only to form one on the first day after the election (should it be another minority situation).

  9. No Guff, Bob Rae’s tea party comment illustrates a big problem the Liberals face. This will be Iggy’s first election as party leader. He’s going to keep himself busy explaining how torture is necessary if it keeps us Americans safer.
I think this election is going to be about the Liberals deciding if they are going to be a centrist party or compete with the NDP in a mad dash to the left. Bob Rae’s tea party comment was probably meant position himself for the next Liberal leadership convention.
Btw, did Mick Gzowski upgrade his cell phone? This video was not quite as grainy as Dion’s swan song.

  10. I think this is a show your face and fundraising tour. There are rifts with the question of whether to wait for an election to replace the leader I think.
The census is pretty lame for an election. Gun registry will come up I think.
The US thought is good but the ‘pubs are doing okay and people see where they are with the Dems so that could backfire. I did hear Reform on the CBC to-day.
Looks like East-West, tar sands and Puff the Magic Energy to me. Oh and we hate Haiti and Africa.

  11. ‘upa’ et al: If Iggy does concede that he would “not rule out” entering negotiations to form a Coalition, do you think that would drive quite a few voters over to the Conservatives?
I’m just guessing, but if the Conservatives played it correctly, I think it might. Because I’m not sure how many outside of Quebec would enjoy seeing the Bloc Quebecois as part of the ruling government.

  12. Bob Rae; Canada’s Great White Dope, the only ones stupider than this clown are the Craig Olivers and his ilk that give someone of this mental capacity a podium, wasn’t Gore available CTV.

  13. The Coalition is the gift that keeps on giving to the Conservatives. In the next election, the Liberals are going have to answer for every loony NDP policy and Bloq traitorous uttering. The Liberals are desperate to change the channel from the Coalition. The MSM will be on their side. It is only web sites like this that will hold to the truth.

  14. If you listen at the 0.46 mark, right after Iggy mentions John Baird, you can clearly hear someone shout “KILL HIM!”. I would expect nothing less from vitriolic hate-mongerers who attend a rally such as this. You don’t hear death wishes such as these at Conservative rallies. I think the RCMP should be called and the shouter should be subjected to a psychological assessment. It’s abhorrent and despicable. How many deaths will Iggy and his ilk personally be responsible for?

  15. Harper is counting on a reasonable odds for a majority and significant reduction in Liberal votes. That’s why he’s already talking about ending the vote subsidy. That way when he gets a majority, it can’t be spun by the Liberals as being trite meanness on Harper’s part. I really think ending the vote subsidy was not about the Liberals, but the Bloc. At the time, the Liberals could have benefited more than the Conservatives from a weakened Bloc. If Harper gets a majority, it’s going to be too late to predict gains for the Liberals in Quebec — the Liberal machine in Quebec is going to rust out soon in the absence of power and patronage.

  16. Why would Dippers rush to vote Liberal to stop Harper?
The ONLY way Iffy can stop Harper is by forming a coalition with Dippers,
so it makes sense for Jack to campaign on ‘putting more NDP MPs in a coalition government’.
Iffy will be asked the question,
and no one will believe any answer other than ‘yes’,
not even the media will believe he won’t seize government if he can.
    Liberal campaign issues:
what ever they decide to steal from the Dippers.

  17. IF it were up to the opposition, PM Harper could sit two or three terms without having a general election. The only way there will be an election this year is if there is a huge accident on the opposition’s part.

  18. I didn’t access the video link.
Is it of Iggy walking around the Parliament buildings with a handycam talking about how he’ll soon be homeless after getting a “B” and dissing the war?

  19. I just wish that I could think that Stephen Harper was better than the least of the evils.
The jiggering around with the official inflation rate is nasty. The Yanks of course have done it,
but it looks as though the Canadian gov’t have done it too.

  20. I can not see any Party saying they will or won’t be in a coalition. They are all going to win or there is no point. The talk will come after the election and depend on the numbers. Not a Liberal leader is a possibility.
At any rate in should clean up a couple of Parties. I look at the Libs and I think if not Iggy than it is Bob and I don’t know if he is electable. I don’t see anyone else.

  21. If I could ask Ignatieff one question it would be “As Liberal Party leader, what policies have you proposed that in your view are different from what Trudeau would have proposed, where he alive today?”

  22. How old is this Iggy fellow? He grew up in a Canada with universal healthcare (1968), public pensions (1967), government knew it had to create the charter of rights & freedoms (1982). Gee, he looks old for a fellow who is in his mid-forties!

  23. On Babble last week the Dippers had a thread on targeting Conservative seats in the 2011 Federal Election. They seem to believe the only election question this year is spring or fall.
Reading that thread I really enjoyed the unrealistic dreams of 50 plus seats, followed by endless arguing. Quite entertaining.

  24. Yep. 0.46 mark there is a clear “Kill Him!” Yelled out referring to John Baird. In light of what just happen in Tucson we can’t take any chances; this must be turned over to the RCMP.

  25. This is just a hunch, but in my opinion, the election is on… and it’s gonna get ugly. The desperate, hateful, partisan tone of Igg’s sermon was a good example of how personal and nasty the “Libs”, and their media stooges are going to act. The left are desperate for a return to power and they are going to go hyper-partisan, crazy ass to get it. It’s also my understanding that the coalition of losers document doesn’t expire until July of 2011, so no need for more embarrassing coalition photo-ops with the Separatists when it comes time to seize power. Just a hunch.

  26. I just hope that PMSH can have a handful of JTF2 boys to watch his back. I trust bed wetting lefties not at all. Crazy mean is what some of them are.

  27. I heard the same “Kill Him!” as you, Simon and Trent.
Where are the CBC/CTV shrills? Oh! slipping in their own drool as they follow Icky around hoping for a nice comfy fur seat in a coalition. They don’t know Mr. Ducippe very well – he is a Communist and Communists hire their own pals to sit on the comfy fur seats!

  28. Simon & Trent make a most interesting point: At 0:46, just after Ignatieff mentions John Baird’s name, a man does appear to say “Kill Him”.
Do others on here agree or might the words have been something else?

  29. A definite “Kill him” from the crowd, right after Iggy mentions John Baird. (0:46-0:51 of segment)
Thereafter Iggy describes John Baird as the ‘take no prisoners’ face of government.
So far, I don’t believe we seen any war crimes bodies piling up under John Baird. More ‘over the top’ rhetoric right after the Tucson ‘shoot em up’.
Blunt but hardly subtle…he then introduces the Liberal candidate as a ‘peacekeeping medalist’.
Obvious ‘battle lines’ are being ‘politically sculptured’. Iggy definitely wants to mount the ramparts; but may find he is hoisted by his own petard. Just stand back and watch the fireworks…

  30. “Kill him” is what I heard, and I just fast-forwarded to that point and have no idea who John Baird is, so I wasn’t hearing what I wanted.

  31. Liberal “international citizens” – yes, that’s exactly who I want running my country….

  32. What would really screw the NDP, and the Liberals is if all of Western Canada, make the lack of equal representation in Western Canada the issue. The Liberals, NDP and the Bloc are fighting to keep Harper from giving us our extra seats due to the census. This has been blocked since Martin was PM. With the extra seats we are entitled to, Harper no longer needs Quebec. In fact no party needs Quebec. It will end the Blocs rule and minority governments.

  33. Surprised how unhealthy looking and ill at ease the Iggster appears. The camera work seems very contrived. The “kill him” outburst could have come from a far left Bob Rae supporter so that would be ok with the MSM.
Most obvious scenario would be that Iggy is pushed over the cliff into an election disaster by his left wing Rae faction, resigns, Rae comes in and merges the Grits with most of the NDP and sells out to the Bloc under the table.

  34. Dave in Mississauga: “Barring a major error by one of the 2 leaders, I feel these 3 issues – unrelated to any party platform – will end up deciding the next election. 1. Left voters voting strategically to defeat the conservative candidate. 2. Voters tired of monority government 3. # voters influenced by MSM. Results will likely be very similar to 2 years ago, which is what no one wants – except the Bloc & NDP.”
In a nutshell that’s the political NO EXIT we face in Canada: The CPC — forming policy for the good of the average Canadian across the country — in a minority government, two legitimate but weak, leftist parties-in-waiting, circling like vultures, and one ethnically/culturally partisan party that wants to break up Canada and separate from our Dominion. In the next election, Canadians won’t be debating issues of importance to the average Jane/John but those socialist, partisan, free-lunch ones so dear to the left-libbers’ hearts, with the MSM cheering them on and framing the “debate.”
Three parties in Canada — the LPC, NDP, and BQ — want to continue to suck at the public teat and too many Canadians seem to think that’s OK, because they like doing it too — as though it’s a “free” snack when, in fact, we’re all paying through the nose via taxes that are way too high. Too many Canadians, including members of the Liberal$, Dippers, and Blockheads, are living in a time warp, proof of which is their visceral hatred of the Taxed Enough Already movement in the U.S. Accusing C/conservatives of being Tea Partiers should be a compliment instead of a nasty put-down (what else would one expect from Baby Point socialist Bob Rae?).
‘Definitely heard “Kill him!” shouted out when Iggy referenced “snarling, contemptuous, take-no-prisoners, hyper-partisan” John Baird.
How amazing that Iggy kicks off his latest bus campaign (destination: NOT IN SERVICE — see Aislin’s brilliant cartoon over at Dr. Roy’s Blog) with a snarling, contemptuous, hyper-partisan tirade against John Baird! Just shows how politically, morally, ethically bankrupt this clown is. Just after being introduced, he said to the cheering crowd “It’s great to be here,” with absolutely no expression on his face, his tongue darting in and out of his mouth. (‘Wonder what that particular body language says?)
    I’m voting Conservative.

  35. I am not sure what Iggy’s lip licking means in Liberal speak. Maybe snake. With horses, lip licking is a sign that the horse is willing to submit.

  36. Quebec is still a fly in the federation ointment; the mere mention of coalition makes me long for sovereignty-association.

  37. @glastnot
It makes me long for an address in a Bloc Riding. Just for use during a referendum.
“Do we give les separatistes le boot?” OUI.

  38. Boy is Iffy becoming homophobic? Calling the MP some ugly names not nice, of course fom the decorum and civility crowd the MSM shall ignore his behavior like they always do. I heard kill him as well.

  39. Kill Him! Now if that had been a conservative saying that, what would be the reaction from the left?
But, No No its ok for the left Just like the Liberal MP caught on tape In the HOC calling for Former PM Mulroney to brought to the HOC & Hung!!
there was no reaction at all. Dont care if you love him or hate him You dont callout for someone to be Killed.

  40. Iggy can honestly say he would not allow a coalition.
If he doesn’t do well, the Liberal poliburo will replace him with Rae by the time Canadians wake up the next morning.

  41. -Toronto’s 905 region and even downtown 416 are ripe for the taking largely due to Jason Kenny’s non stop talks with the ethnics for a couple of years now…With the advent of Rob Ford’s landslide election, I believe Toronto is turning. For years the Liberal machine along with the Immigration dept have been pushing their brand on new Canadians. The problem for the Liberals is that many of these new Canadians have very Conservative values ingrained in them from their old country and I’m not just talking fiscally Conservative, culturally too.
-The Lib’s leader is way past is best before date to a point that fuzzy growths and funny smells are starting around him…The Liberals time is ticking and they must make a move very soon…The economy is getting a bit better, Obama not doing that good down south…In the Lib’s power corridor, where the haunting shadows of Johnny Cretin and Paulie Desmarais are still very present, I’m almost sure the “Go” has been given.
These 2 main bullet points is why, I personally believe an election will be held between the budget and June of this year.
The poison pill: The elimination of political party tax support via per vote per diem.
The NDP and especially the Bloc’s survival depends on that money thus they will not be able to support the budget.
    All IMO, of course.
FINAL NOTE: I really hope that this time, the Greens, the party with no seats in the House will not be given a seat at the TV debate. The last time was very painful with Lizzy Mayhem there and took away precious debate time from the others. The Bloc should not be there either BTW…This is a national debate, not a Provincial (Quebec) one.

  42. I have no fear for our friend John. In Canada, unlike the U.S., we have civility and reasoned discourse. Moreover, unlike the U.S., we have gun control. Also, our social programs reduce the inequality that results in all crime to a shadow of what the Americans are prepared to tolerate. Most important, the Americans are harangued incessantly by demagogues on Fox news, where we have the fair and balanced CBC. Finally, if Mr. Baird is harmed he will receive the world’s best free health care.
