Fewer crime are committed in rural areas not because long gun ownership somehow acts as a deterrent; it’s because there are fewer people all around, and the populations that do live there tend to be older, more stable, and more homogeneous. The most crime also occurs in the areas with the fewest bales of hay. Maybe bales of hay deter crime.
