Reader Tips

Tonight’s amusement en route to the Tips is a performance of a few tunes that were played in the 16th and 17th century during masques:

A masque was a spectacle performed at court or at the manor of a member of the nobility; its purpose was to glorify the court or a particular aristocrat. The masque included diverse artistic elements at different stages in its development but invariably included choreographed dances by masked performers; members of the nobility were often participants.

Here are Markus Wuersch and Peter Solomon (bios under the video) creating a remarkably orchestral sound with just an organ and one trumpet as they play a selection of early English Masque Dances in a church in Switzerland.

  1. Obama apparently thinks the media should stop reporting the news, and start promoting his agenda:
“I’ve been surprised by how the news cycle here in Washington is focused on what happens this minute, as opposed to what needs to happen over the course of months, years,” Obama told the crowd at George Washington University.

  2. The missing link isn’t anywhere now, but it was from the Obama quote. Fixed with alacrity.
Nice Masque music, EBD. Very bright and shiny.

  3. I mean in the sense that there is no non-existant link anywhere anymore. The link itself, sans participial adjective, is now in place. Wait, what?

  4. You are NOT going to believe this. Go to
http://www.swiftcurrentonline.com and go to the story about the Shaunavon man who has been busted for – you are not going to believe this – “possesion of Mary – Juanna!!!!
The compelling story goes that the police stopped a vehicle and discovered that Mary – Juanna was present.
The report goes on to say that the dangerous offender has appeared in court and is scheduled to re-appear in court on Friday. Until his re-appearance the alleged accused is most likely presumed to be sleeping it off.
Glad to hear that our police are keeping these dangerous criminals away from “the rest of us”

  5. Globe and Mail, Thursday.

“Lana Lawless, a former police officer who underwent a sex change operation five years ago, is challenging the LPGA’s ban on transgender players.”
“There is no such thing as born female. Either you’re female, or you’re not.”, the newspaper article quotes Lawless.
Not so fast. If your XY chromosomes say you’re male, there may well still be physical characteristics derived from that, which may give you an advantage over the XXs.
And a decade ago, when a transgender woman wanted to serve as a counselor at a Vancouver rape crisis centre, she was rejected. Apparently back then, being born a woman did matter.
Anyway, here’s the second instance in a few days of the feminist politically correct types not being able to keep their stories straight.

A quite devastating report by HM Inspectorate of Constabulary has admitted that the British police have staged a 30 year ‘retreat from the streets’ and abandoned the public to endemic thuggery which has blighted the lives of millions of people.

Oh crap, that’s not really a Reader Tip.

  8. Asked about what the questioner saw as an increase in racial tension Thursday,
President Obama said a “tribal attitude” can come as a result of economic hardship.

This news article reminds me of the story about Jimmy Carters visit to the Apache tribe of Arizona.
Carter promised to increase water supplies for their crops, income for their braves,
and free health care for the entire reservation.
As he was about to leave,
one of the tribal elders gave him a large silver medallion with the inscription “Walking Eagle.”
Carter waved and grinned to everyone as he left,
but one of the reporters asked the old elder what “Walking Eagle” meant.
The old elder smiled and said:
“Walking Eagle’ is the title we give to a leader that is so full of shit he can no longer fly.”

“Every day, an estimated 50 containers loaded with 800 tonnes of textiles and shoes illegally imported from China and Vietnam arrive in the Czech Republic. Some of this merchandise will be sold on the local market, and the rest will be shipped on to other European countries.
The last few months have seen a dramatic rise in the scale of fraud in Asian textiles. For Czech customs administration spokesman, Jiří Barták, “All the indications are that Asian dealers are using the Czech Republic as a hub for products illegally entering European Union’s single market which allows for the free circulation of goods.”
Authorities are largely unable to identify the “organisers” of this illegal trade who hide behind companies that are often specially created to receive only a few consignments. During the first months of their existence, these companies purchase millions of tonnes of clothing, and then vanish into thin air when required to declare and pay for VAT on sales. Registered owners turn out to be frontmen or foreigners who have left the Czech Republic long before the fraud is discovered.

  10. For the ‘stinking giant fans’ file:
William Connolley barred from editing climate related articles and biographies of climate scientists by his former wikipaedian cronies. It’s really that bad.
    Developing.

  11. Check out the front page of the globe and Mail’s online edition. “Meet Michael Ignatieff, struggling family man.”
If he’s struggling, it’s because he’s Liberal, and not because he’s a family man.
On the lighter side, my application to become a member of the online edition of the G+M has failed again. The reason, it says my Sask. postal code “is not in Canada.”
Great way to keep Conservatives from commenting on their site.

  13. I did a thorough check on the Globe and Mail and the problem with Saskatchewan Postal codes.
Many people misinterpret postal codes. For example, S-O-H-O-B-O is “S” zero “H” zero “B” zero. But this was not the case here.
The Globe and Mail does not allow you to write your postal code as S0H-0B0 or S0H 0B0. Nor does it want soh-obo or soh obo. It HAS to be written as S0H0B0 all in caps with no space.
Remember, that is “Tranata” you’re dealing with, and not the town of Cracked Axle, Saskatchewan, or Broken Shovel, Alberta. And last but not least, it is a Liberal paper!!
