Vivian Krause shares the Tides Foundation details in the Financial Post;
Like most protests, the one against oil tankers has all the look and feel of a Canadian grassroots movement. The campaign against Alberta’s oil sands also seems to rise out of the people, but the interesting thing is that there are very few roots under that grass. Money comes in from a small core of U.S. charitable groups. One of those groups — the U.S. Tides Foundation of California (Tides U.S.) and its Canadian counterpart have paid millions to at least 36 campaign organizations. (See list at right.)
All the money, at least US$6-million, comes from a single, foreign charity. The Tides U.S. campaign against Alberta oil is a campaign against one of Canada’s most important industries. It’s fair for Canadians to inquire about who’s funding this campaign and why. The trouble is, nobody knows.

Shame on those that gave money to any of these scamming, low life Marxists!
…The Tides Center’s Board Chairman is Wade Rathke, who is also a member of the Tides Foundation Board. Rathke, a protege of the late George A. Wiley, serves as President of the New Orleans-based Local 100 of the Service Employees International Union, and is the founder and chief organizer of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN).
ACORN connected to Tides foundations?
…anyone surprised Tides is nothing but trouble?

When we all go back to nuts `n` berries it will be a pleasure indeed to see those Red union goofs starving.
“who’s funding this campaign and why. The trouble is, nobody knows.”
Tides was set up with the express purpose of laundering charity money so it cannot be determined who gave what.
Tides Canada has been funding Vancouver politicians and buying elections here.

We need a law that allows those providing funds to any activists who damage property to be fined and sued for damages, including all court costs. They are every bit as responsible for the damage as the radicals who are caught in action.
Astroturf! Astroturf!
‘Has all the earmarks of a money-laundering scheme. ‘No surprise that ACORN’s involved.
I’m reading Michelle Malkin’s Culture of Corruption: Obama and His Team of Tax Cheats, Crooks, and Cronies . All of this fits. The pro-Obama MSM thugs should have dug this stuff up before the Obamanation was elected POTUS.
‘Unethical practices everywhere. What we need is a good dose of the Good Book and people on their knees once a week doing an examination of conscience — like things used to be. Who says religion’s always a negative thing?
Wow, it’s simply shocking how few environmental groups are monitoring the oilsands.
We need at least a couple hundred more Eco orgs, everybody doing the same thing, because obviously dozens and dozens of them doing the same thing isn’t enough to improve the environment. (Or maybe it’s because they’re simply doing nothing but mis-spending donors’ money, shhh…).
I’m sending a copy of this to my MP (Conservative, of course) and asking him for comments and/or to look into this matter. If US interests are trying to influence Canadian policy they need to be brought into the light and not hide like the cockroaches they are.
with a few moments looking at search results, there seems to be a George Soros connection.
yeah I know, I was surprised too.
Got news. CEI is 95% assuredly a rent-a-front group for “foundations” that serve corporate interests. The corporate interests that would be competitive with the tar sands producers.
Hey, that’s business. Natural Resource Defence Council and EDF have been fronting for banksters and others wanting to squeeze out profits from cap and trade.
Mr. Soros, a champion of liberal causes, has been directing his money to groups that work on health care and the environment, rather than electoral politics.

I read this post and the comments, then turned on Glen Beck. His topic today-Tides and Soros and some plan they have for schools and churches.
mary:
Just watching … fascinating stuff.
There’s no real surprises here. Underneath all this you will find a good deal of corporate competition by other means. The oil and gas companies were contributing heavily to antinuclear campaigns in the 1970s and ’80s. As late as 2005, Enbridge was a large contributor to Ontario Clean Air Alliance and the Suzuki Foundation. It would hardly be surprising of some of them were laundering through store-front operations like Tides.
At the center of all this Tides crap is the Hollyhock Institute

If I am King (The vengeful, nasty, blood covered hands, autocratic kind) for a day, I wear to god that the guillotines & firing squads & general clean up crews will be VERY VERY busy.

Ecoweenies, corporate fraudsters, former MP’s, MPP’s,PM’s, wicked & clever lawyers, excess bureaucrats, soon to be former terrorists.
Pol Pot and Mao and Stalin will be jealous: finally a right wing dictator who shows them how it’s really done.
Call me a “conspiracy theorist” but look for Mickey and Jack and their crews to be providing political encouragement to the Yanks to destroy the oilsands industry. I honestly believe they hate conservatism that much — that they would deliberately effect an economic recession in Western Canada in order to get progressives back in charge of government. Progressives in this country have long ago abandoned their respect for the voting booth and their fiduciary duty to the taxpayer.
Iggy, Jack and their cohorts have demonstrated time and again that they are willing to interfere in government in ways that go far beyond the traditional role of healthy opposition in Parliament, breaching all protocol and meddling in National interests abroad.
Evidence:
1) Copenhagen — where not only the leaders of the Opposition showed up (on taxpayer dime) to oppose Canada on the International stage, but even bureaucrats like Toronto’s Mayor Miller was there to diss Canada on the environment.
2) Vancouver Olympics — Opposition leaders pooh-poohed it as too “Nationalistic”.
3) The G-20 — it was simply Canada’s turn to host, but the Opposition used it as opportunity to promote as much civil unrest as possible and pooh-pooh Canada again on the International stage.
4) The U.N. Security Council seat — Iggy unashamedly proclaimed before they voted: “Canada doesn’t deserve a seat on the Security Council”. Then after Canada lost the seat and the Iggynoramus got his wish, he conveniently blamed the government.
What an embarrasmment and destruction to the Canadian National interest these weasels have been! I’m sure Portugal and Germany also have strong opposition parties, but they would never breach protocol by embarrassing the leader of Government on the International stage when he/she is representing the National interest in the normal course of his/her duties.
Somewhat related, found this at Instapundit, the EU suckers have been sending all their jobs offshore for no benefit.
WALTER RUSSELL MEAD: Kyoto Fraud Revealed. “The left leaning Guardian newspaper in Britain let the cat out of the bag yesterday, reporting that while the EU’s emission of CO2 declined by 17% between 1990 and 2010, this apparent progress was bogus. If you add up the CO2 released by the goods and services Europeans consumed, as opposed to the CO2 thrown off by the goods and services they produced, the EU was responsible for 40% more CO2 in 2010 than in 1990. The EU, as the Guardian puts it, has been outsourcing pollution — and jobs — rather than cutting back on greenhouse gasses.”
There’s a website called activist cash that often has good info on such things.
You can see why the Marxists went green after the fall of the Berlin Wall. That’s where the money was/is and you can cloak your agenda in green. Arguably, one of the biggest problem areas in a troubled world is the lavish funding, (corporate, individual and taxpayer) for all the green hysteria masquerading as AGW and other benign, eco friendly pseudo-causes de jure. The West is economically doomed unless it can return to reason and stand up to this onslaught.
If you check the Board of Directors of Tide USA you see the name of Joanie Bronfman, yes of the booze Bronfman family- under the link below it says the Bronfmans are major contributers to Tide:
http://www.smokershistory.com/Bronfman.htm
So we have to wonder why a family so entrenched in the Canadian economy wants to see it cutting off a source of its energy literally and firgureatively.
Here ya go ………
…… (http://www.activistcash.com/)………
Al the Fish, this is precisely the problem with Canada’s entitled and wealthy l/Liberal$: They’ll sell the rest of us down the river, because they’ll always be able to afford whatever form of energy is available after they’ve done their best to take down the most efficient, most accessible forms of energy which they don’t happen to favour. To hell with anyone who isn’t them. Their motto? “I’m OK (I’m rich and powerful) and I could care less if you’re OK.”
I’m sick to death of the Suzukis, Laytons/Chows, Ignatieffs, Dions, Trudeaus, Raes, Bronfmans, Those-I’ve-Missed, who live high off the hog but profess to be concerned about the size of everyone’s carbon footprint but their own — because theirs is gimongous and they’re quite content with that because, for some reason, they’re special.
So now the CPC and Prime Minister Harper have not only the Disloyal HOC Opposition and the Unelected MSM Opposition against them but also the filthy rich international opposition who give to “green” causes in order to defeat duly elected governments.
Who said the Wall’s come down? It looks like all that that’s done is unleash the undemocratic, leftist, spores to take hold in the rest of the world.
‘Talk about End Times.
It is frustrating that the motivations of organizations that self declare as champions of the environment are never questioned by the MSM. For every one that genuinely cares about conservation there’s gotta be a dozen that are anti-development, anti-human, anti-capitalists or just competitors looking for market advantage. Meanwhile, every skeptic has his or her background completely reviewed for any links to Big Oil or right-wing think tanks.
Pew center for excellence in journalism produces leftists.
Gets money trough Tides foundation.
Main Stream Media promotes left causes.
Tides gets more donations from left endoctrinated people

If the people in charge dont know that its middle east oil interests funding the anti oil sands groups, then maybe somebody should got back to how business works. They are the biggest losers by oil sands production.
O.K.
I have a doozy and i think moslty everyone in here will enjoy and i do encourage you to do it as well just to get them to boil!!!
Here goes
I recently “retired my ride” through the old cash for clunckers insentive program…….now now now just wait a minute don’t get all hissy at me.
so i filled out there forms and then they asked me will i use public transportation more or less …i chose never (yes it’s an option) and there were so many questions like why are you using retire your ride ? i answered becaseu my car has been polluting the earth for over nine years it leak’s this everywhere and spew’s that everywhere …also i put so i could buy an older f-350 diesel to go hunting (there is a multiple choice and a writting block for you to answer in youro wn words also and yes you can use both just click both boxes and type away). My buddies were getting tired of sharing there f-350’s with me so now we can all drive our own individual vehicles more room for deer carcases ,gun cases, ammo, safety equpment, and camo, and food. LMAO
I also made a point of making it very clear that i really don’t care about the recycling program i could care less but since i am a capitalist i am tring to get top dollar for my car and there is no way that car could ever be saftied so it’s only other option was a scrap yard witch offered me 140 bucks for my car and i just had to get more for it and that retire your ride was the only sucker around they offered me 300 bucks for my car so i took it .
UUMMM oh yeah one other question that i answered with words was how did you here about us ?
to witch i replied abunch of friend were making fun of how stupid the retire your ride program was as opose to draining all the fluids out of it removing the baterry and letting it rot in a field.
These may seem stretched but trust me there was room i made it ,some let you ramble on and some only gave youl ike a couple of sentences and i made good use of them all !!!

Well, that’s odd – the excitable types who twisted themselves into knots over the NRA meddling in Canadian matters haven’t uttered a peep over this.
I’m starting to think that they have an agenda or something.
Tides funds all kinds of astroturf in the USA and Canada. Like gun control for example. All astroturf. Take a look at any piece of anti-gun research or other propaganda, you usually find Tides, Pew Charitable Trust, and a few more.
There are many “charitable trusts” in the USA that lobby Canada and the provinces for lots of Liberal causes, usually through some kind of astroturf cutout as we see here. Tides is one of the most perniciously Communist.
The reason they bother us is they can get legislation enacted here with a relatively low expenditure of time and money. Once the policy is in place in Canada, they then parade it before the various DemocRat and RINO Republican poobahs in state and federal governments.
Why do you think we STILL have single payer medicine? Common sense alone would have canned it twenty years ago, but it staggers on.
You will probably find that once conservative charitable organizations have had their BoD hijacked over the years and the donations from beginnings to present might have a right to left drift.
IIRC, there was something once brought up that Tides, or someone involved, had put money into settling a million missing dollars at either ACORN or SEIU.
IIRC, one of the ACORN/SEIU organizers left or was dismissed because of the problem.
Come to think of it? Glenn Beck had a show that covered something along these lines…
“Why do you think we STILL have single payer medicine?”
Because Ralph Klein is a Liberal at heart(journalist before he got into politics) and had too much invested in the status quo.
Oz, I mean federally. Two-tier medicine is considered to be a vampire rising from the grave by -all- Canadian political parties and MSM alike. Two tier medicine is a no brainer for Canada, its inevitable, but if you say that you’re a baby eating monster. Why is that?
Same reason the tar sands are “dirty oil”. Because there are people paying a great deal of money to make it that way, that’s why. These trusts among them.
Canadian policy made in America. By Communists.
It would sure be interesting to know whether the individuals or groups who are funding the Tides Foundation are in a position to make money from the non-renewable energy industry.
The Natural Resources Defence Council – its high profile attorney is Robert Kennedy Jr. He and this organization have, or have had, an office in Victoria B.C.
There is a book titled Cloak of Green (1995) by Elaine Dewar that explains what goes on in the environment movement. Governments in Canada (all parties) have been paying these groups for years. It can be read here:
http://windfarms.wordpress.com/cloak-of-green/
PS: For those in YYC it is in the CPL.
Phantom….being in AB, I get Oz’s point. When Klien was in,he actually tried to start so called “two tier” health care in AB. The Feds said, do that and we cut off all your health care Fed benefits and stated the so called Health Care Act. He calved…but the funny(or not so funny)thing about it is, AB recieves ZILCH from the Feds for healthcare,we send it all to Quebec and the Maritimes (and soon to be Ont.)
But back on topic….how much does Dr.Fruitfly’s foundation get from Tides?? Anybody got any numbers??
Oh, please. This type of stuff goes on all the time, from both sides.
Most of you have never heard of the Koch brothers, who run a private firm which takes in over $100 billion a year, and is reportedly quite profitable. (They don’t have to post annual reports.)
The two brothers contribute millions of dollars to a host of think tanks and institutes that support the Tea Party in particular, and Libertarian ideals in general, but they don’t make a big personal deal of it. (Though one brother ran for President as head of the Libertarian party.)
So you have Soros throwing his money around on the left, and these guys throwing their money around on the right, with all of them doing it behind the scenes as much as possible.
In general, this doesn’t bug me, as I think people should be able to spend as much as they want to convince other people of their ideas. However, I do think Soros and his ilk get a bigger bang for their bucks, because the media lap up their stuff while sneering at Tea Partiers. And it really bothers me that we get idiots like McGuinty wasting billions of dollars we don’t have on $0.71 kWh solar electricity because he falls in line with whatever the idiots at CBC say.
Got news. CEI is 95% assuredly a rent-a-front group for “foundations” that serve corporate interests. The corporate interests that would be competitive with the tar sands producers.”
well jack, isn’t this just another example of capitalists using every unethical trick in the book to create a financial advantage for themselves?
THE SAME KIND OF CAPITALISM THAT WAS TOUTED PREVIOUSLY IN THE POST ABOUT HOW CAPITALISM RESCUED THE CHILEAN MINERS.
jist askin’…. any SDA regular with an explanation to make this contradiction go away feel free to interject.
No offense justthinkin at 01:48, but the funniest part of that post was “He calved…but the funny(or not so funny)thing about it …..”
Don’t you have actual cows in AB to do the calving?
Or is this an AB expression I’ve not heard before?
🙂
OK, beagle, I’ll rise to the bait.
First, do not conflate capitalism and corporatism. Some of the basic conditions for ideal capitalism (IC) are no barriers to entry or exit other than capital, and both buyers and sellers are price takers. And there are many examples where this is true: your local dry cleaner, barber, or restaurant, for example. IC theory predicts the market will provide a variety of products, with different designs and price points, to meet a variety of tastes. Again, take a look around at your local restaurants – here in Richmond Hill, I can eat at Burger King for $3.99 per person, or I can go to a Chinese restaurant, and share a 4-lb lobster for $120.
Corporatism tries to reverse these factors. Where possible, they try to raise barriers to entry, through actions such as tied selling (see e.g. Microsoft), quotas (see chicken, eggs, milk), certification (see lawyers, accountants, etc.), and regulation (see telecom, for example, where Bell fought every relaxation of monopoly rules). Now, note that most of these require the government’s acceptance and interference in the market.
If you’re at all familiar with Posner’s Capture Theory of Regulation, you’d know that he predicted that corporate interests which are concentrated, well financed, and have a vested interest in “comfortable” regulations, whereas the citizens’ are diffuse, poorly financed, and their interests are in the tens or hundreds of dollars, while the corporations’ are in the millions, inevitably results in the “capture” of the regulatory body by the corporate interests. Ask yourself this question – how many “ordinary Canadians” know their MP or MPP personally? Then, how many company presidents or businessmen? Changes in campaign finance have mitigated some of the corporate advantages in Canada, but certainly not in the US of A. Corporations are always looking for government handouts, and they certainly get a lot of them.
I think it’s indisputable that capitalism or even corporatism results in more innovation than more centrally planned economies. Despite the obvious brains of some Chinese engineers – which you can see from all the patents they’ve earned for companies like IBM, Motorola, and so on – the list of important inventions in the 20th century from China and Russia is pretty small (although I understand the Russians used to claim to have invented the telephone, television, and electric light). There are just so many more incentives in a capitalist system to find a better way to do something – cut costs, improve quality, design new products – it’s clear that they are always going to be ahead in that way.
But even the founder of modern economics, Adam Smith, said something to the effect that there was scarcely ever a meeting of companies that didn’t result in injury to the public. Even he was aware of the threat of corporatism.
When we complain about corporatism here at SDA, we mean market distortions like food marketing boards, cap and trade, $0.71 kWh electricity, and so on. IKEA didn’t buy all those solar panels because they wanted to be a good citizen – it was a profitable decision, but one based on artificial prices. We laud the benefits of capitalism, while we decry the costs of corporatism, such as auto buyouts, grants for hockey palaces, and buying off unions (unions can be just as guilty of corporatism as companies).
While you might argue that corporatism is an inevitable outgrowth of capitalism, you might as well argue that rape is an inevitable outgrowth of sex, or theft an inevitable outgrowth of property. There are always people who are going to do bad things to get what they want; capitalism, in general, provides more incentives to get them to do good things to get what they want instead than any other system we’ve developed.
Now, I’ve said all this without insulting you once. I trust you understand the difference now, and that what you perceived as a contradiction was in fact an error in your premises.
I sound like a broken record on this site.
Using the enviromentalists as one weapon in their effort to get a slice of the oilsands cashflow is what the lib-left in eastern Canada considers their due. It is the history of this country back to H.Bay Co. Trudeau was just one of the more successful at it. (NEP)
Consider the current debt and deficits in eastern Canada and then consider their demographic. It becomes very clear that the ticking clock is about to ring. The un-science of carbon sequestoring will establish itself with control in eastern Canada. While I have some faith in the CPC I do not trust that their desire for power will not result in a massive transfer of western resources out east in another vain attempt to buy votes.
Since the feds voted themselves a campaign finance program of $2 per vote per year, while sitting, I do not donate federally at all anymore. Most people do not realize that this money generates more funds than any riding association would need to run a campaign. Although I live in BC I have donated all my political donations to the Wild Rose Party of Alberta for the past 4 years. Unless Western Canada has provincial governments prepared to defend western interests and ask questions about how we are governed nationally I fear that change will never happen.

Normally, I’d refrain from comments like this, lest I be accused of being a grammar Nazi, but you asked specifically, so here it is:
Any comments of yours that are longer than a single line, I skip. Not because of your ideas, but because your complete disregard for the rules of spelling, grammar, and punctuation make reading your posts a chore.
How come nonoe of yall read my comment above i thought it was quit appropriate and funny as well .!!!!!!!
I count six errors in grammar and spelling in a single sentence. (There’s also one serious error in logic, but I’ll let that go.) I take care with most of my posts to preview, and go over them to make sure that spelling and the like are correct. Many other posters here – ET, EBD, even BTJ, for example – apparently take equal care (or perhaps they’re better writers than I, and perfect prose flows from their keyboards; if so, I applaud them).
You may think it’s unimportant; I think it’s rude. You’re asking me to make a considerable extra effort to decipher your writing and your meaning. If you don’t think it’s worth making the effort to make yourself clear, I don’t think it’s worth the effort to read what you posted.
As I said, this is not something I’d normally post, but you asked.
