  3. Well having recently lost a loved one to suicide I would like to say to all and sundry that the gun registry would not have prevented it. Of course my loved one didn’t use a gun but he is just as dead.

    Not to be a downer, but the registry has been in place for a long time, with no lives yet saved because of the registry. I wonder how many lives could have been saved by putting extra police on the front lines to stop drunk driving. How many Canadian lives could have had a difference made?

  13. It’s funny they keep lying about the cost; but the real kicker in all this is the trashing of Father Trudeau’s famous Charter of Rights. According to a paper apparently researched by Dr. Ted Morton, Canadians have a Right of Liberty. This means, among other things, the Right to be free from Government interference and meddling in one’s private life except where we are suspected of violating the Law. According to the Supreme Court the test for Suspicion must be quite high.
    It would also seem to me that providing Police Services with an automatic registry search of your property and personal circumstances under casual conditions violates the Right to be Free From Unreasonable Search.

Gunney99, further to your comments if I am pulled over by a police constable for a traffic violation and he does a check on my drivers licence and vehicle registration and perhaps a criminal background search to see if I am on an outstanding warrant that should be as far as he should be able to check. If he has the ability to check whether I own a gun or not then has he not actually violated my right to privacy? Just thinking perhaps we can get an answer through discussion.

    But support for the registry, because of a suicide, makes perfect sense if eventual CONFISCATION of all guns is the unspoken goal…

  20. Chief Blair in Toronto has a squad that goes around to seniors homes who have registered weapons.
    They are deliberately seeking out granpas who aren’t properly storing their guns, these people are then threatened with fines and jail, but if they give-up the weapons, all will be forgiven.
    Boy …what I’d give to have first dibs at some of the antiques these guys have been confiscating.
    What a scam, all legal.!
    If you register your weapons, there’s a good chance the cops may show up, warrantless, checking on your storage adhearance.
    Either don’t register or be totally compliant or risk confiscation of your private property.!

  22. I won’t speculate on Scott Simms’ reasons do vote whatever way he has.
    I will however say that suicide is usually the result of severe or manic depression.
    Would it have mattered whether the gun was registered or not?? I doubt it. I agree that the money they’ve spent on the registry could have saved hundreds of lives had it been spent on treatment for diseases such as depression. One thing is for sure. It may have saved Mr. Simms life.

    If this idiot actually cared about the individual, he would not want to impose his collectivist gun registry tyranny on INDIVIDUALS who have done nothing wrong.

That is why they brag about the registry database being used 6000 times a day. According to a radio show caller today, whenever there is a “gun-spotted” call, all those in the immediate neighborhood who own guns are checked out.
    I can only go by what I see and hear. In the case of the caller, the informed show guests did not refute the caller’s statement.

  25. My wifes brother was murdered with a long gun in 1971. There was no requirement for FAC, there was no registry. If there had been the perp would still have had the gun because there was no reason to disqualify him. And my bro-in-law would be just as dead.
    Not one memeber of his family supports the registry.

  35. A little math can help to clarify things a bit. There are two issues: A) lives saved by citizens with guns and B) lives lost due to vermin with guns and/or accidents. A – B = C. Where C is a plus number, allowing citizens to arm themselves is a good idea. In Switzerland (where every sane adult male must own a gun) and the USA, C is a very large plus number.

Everyone is pissed about the registry – even the guys who don’t own guns are angry about the waste of tax dollars. And yet, it lives on…

  39. What is amazing about the gun registry is the lack of what business people would call a value proposition.
    To a Liberal the cost is irrelevant. Recall they estimated the startup cost at 2 million and missed that target by 1000 x’s. Liberal love means never having to say you’re sorry. Liberal/Dippers don’t even know what the cost to run it is now and they don’t care.
    Seconds before the vote we see cost ranges from a chart on Evan Solomon’s CBC of $1 to 4 million all the way up to the Taxpayers Association saying it might be $900 million before the Association finally settled on the cost number of $185 million. Thus the cost is essentially unknown and there is no benefit. The benefit comes only in the form of emotional hysteria as demonstrated by this tragic Scott Simms MP example.
    Therefore we have 153 MPs voting for something for which cost is irrelevant and they can’t come up with a single benefit based on logic. In other words with no cost/benefit, there can be no value. Yet they claim we must have the Registry. What more proof do we need that these 153 MPs are clearly not competent to get value for our tax dollars?

    If every Canadian was forced to wear a helmet 24/7 we would, unarguably, save dozens of lives every year. If we stationed a paramedic on every corner in every city, we could save hundreds of lives. If we banned alcohol we could save thousands of lives. If we banned cars we could save tens of thousands of lives.

  45. I think this excuse for voting against the registry is just political cover. This guys riding just might have the highest per capita gun ownership in the country – by hiding behind this tearful tragedy simms shields himself from criticism from his constituents and avoids being on the outs with iggy by voting the way those constituents want him to.
    He should be pitied certainly, but not for the loss of his father but rather the callous use of the event for his personal political purposes.
