New research shows that kids infected by adenovirus 36 (AD36), which causes the common cold and slight stomach upset, are more likely to be heavier – much heavier — than children who hadn’t been infected with the bug.
And why not? There aren’t enough Big Macs on the planet to account for the increasing waistlines of children, but that hasn’t stopped them, either.

“And yet, epidemiologists have also wondered why the prevalence of obesity has tripled in children in the last 30 years – one of the fastest spreading chronic diseases in history.
There is still a lot to be learned about AD36. Researchers don’t know how or why it infects, or whether it infects repeatedly. Nor is it clear if it does cause weight gain either because of an active infection or because of a lasting change in a person’s metabolism. Dr. Jean Pierre Chanoine, of B.C. Children’s Hospital says it’s possible the virus affects the appetite, or perhaps the effect of insulin. But he says if AD36 is shown to have a causative effect on obesity, it would be just one small factor involved…”The message has to be clear that this is important to study but there is still a lot of work to do to show causality, and it should not detract us or government or physicians or community from moving to a healthier lifestyle.”
This “science” smells like ploy to extract pounds and pounds of grant money from government agencies. Nature and nurture are the predominant factors. This virus would, at best, just aggravate the problem.
It’s the Ritalin, etc. Oh, and TV too!
Seriously, I’ve got 3 kids and made the conscious effort to live walking distance to our school, so they can at least get that exercise.
The left gets all bent out of shape with kids health, but they undermine it by:
– being soft on crime, making walking to school unsafe
– promoting the centralization of education into large schools, killing the neighbourhood school.
I thought obesity was caused by eating more calories than you burned off. Then I got a cold one day and woke up the next day and I had gained 35 lbs. sarc.

This is the result of dismantling/removing all the really good playground equiptment because it was “too dangerous” coupled with removing the competitive drive from games and sports because “nobody should feel like a loser” so every child wins by getting fat and uncompetitive.
Yay!
It’s cool. When Islam takes over the Muslims are going to make all the fat unbelievers run to death just for laughs.
Bl@kbird, when Islam tries to take over we are going to roll fatties down upon them and squish ’em all.
Bring on the McDonalds and the AD36!
How silly. Practically everybody gets the common cold. We got numerous fat kids not because of some stupid disease reason. We got fat kids because of idiotic parents who feed them too much junk food and allow them to spend too much time wallowing in front of TV and computers.
You’ll forgive me if I think this is total bunk.
Occam’s Razor will suggest that- quite simply- these kids eat too much and exercise too little.
Your correlation is weak. You have no causal mechanism. Your “science” is a waste of our time.
AD36?? I didn’t anyone from that era was still alive.

Fat kids?
Never had them before did we?
It’s clearly a side effect of Irritable Climate Syndrome.
obviously these Fatty Chubmeisters have been to busy blowing their chubby little noses to exercise.
feed a cold , starve a fever
Sedentary kids who stay inside most of the time coughing germs on each other and eating too much out of boredom seems like a perfectly healthy way to exist. But if the next leftist plan to “save” us involves “food police” well they will need to have “research” done to backup their “arrests”.
Sedentary lifestyles and obesity….
It seems all my acquaintances have remarked that “mid-aged spread” has even caught up with me.
I can barely see my shoes. This all occurred in the last 15 months.
Lots of tests and very qualified medicine men who seem to share one orthodoxy about my unhealing ribs, weight gain and cough. They have tested and scanned and largely failed to identifty anything beyond scaring in the lungs which they attribute to “smoking”(big emphasis).
My epiphany and actions which have resulted in weight loss, lowered BP and some healing of busted ribs which have now begun to knit…has them in a snit. They are not convinced that a sedentary lifestyle to prevent more fractures, busted ribs and lack of exercise, result in lung congestion….the ribs I suspect are the result of a known side-effect of a particular prescribed drug….which I discontinued unilaterally.
Sitting/laying about made me appear pregnant and coughing up my right lung.
It mostly hurts when I laugh, cough,….sneezing is a tramatic experience.
My life-experience makes me pragmatic….50/50 if I’m right I will live….otherwise I will die…which anyway is much more inevitable at 65.
These fat kids are simply the result of kids bused to school …games like soccer, softball, tag, red roger being banned….to reduce the schools’ exposure to liability.
This coincidental with the irony of a massive/popular government funded/encouraged youth soccer programme…conducted on a plethera of municiple soccer-fields while the school yards are deserted…..
Welll, ..whennn…III…was..aa..kiddd…, I don’t think we had a fat kid in our entire school- grade one thru nine. Nor were there the prissy asthmatic, softies… who’d eventually come to be so common.
Our days were spent playing in the dirt, competing in sports, doing the chores, tooling around morning till dark. No TV or video games meant playing outdoors until it was too dark to keep doing it any longer.
Wanna carrot, turnip or radish? That was our junk food. Pluck it, rub it on your shirt to get some of the dirt off and chomp it down. I might be loathe to do that now, but I have no doubt that that exposure back then provided a measure of immunity to a whole host of infections. Slice your finger, skin your knee? Amazing what human spit will do.
The protective coddling we see everyday now, ensures it will result in what they’re taking so many pains to avoid.
And that’s progress? Hmmm.
orrr maybe children with poorer health outcomes tend to be heavier due to poorer nutrition; and also have poorer health outcomes, poorer nutrition, and susceptibility to obesity due to the fact that they are of lower socioeconomic status.
just sayin’.
How about a simple google search on “obesity’s effects on the immune system”?
Or how about a search of “sedentary lifestyle effects on immune system”?
No kidding if kids are out of shape, or are obese they are going to be more susceptible to just about anything in the way of disease or sickness.
I know my own immune system takes a kicking when I don’t get out and live actively. It really takes a beating when I let my weight creep up.
Empty school grounds and gymnasiums after school hours and phys-ed on an every second days basis plus a dominant video game culture and boom… You have a problem.
I’m currently trying to shed over 120 lbs, and I’m almost at the 2/3 mark. I’m actually quite grateful to McDonald’s as they make eating out easier. They have lots of healthy menu choices, and I can look up the nutritional info ahead of time and plan my meals so I don’t overshoot my daily calorie allotment.
It makes me sick when I hear about Subway being touted as a healthy place to eat and McDonald’s as a calorie horror house. Sorry, but a footlong meatball and cheese sub from Subway with a bag of chips and a couple chocolate chip cookies is as bad as, or worse than anything on the House of Rom menu. Yeah, the infamous Jared lost a tonne of weight there, but he did so by sticking to the healthy choices. It’s quite possible to do the same at McDonald’s.
Here’s what I used to look like:

Here’s what I look like now (I actually weight 15 lbs less, but haven’t updated the photo):

McDonald’s played a part in that. So did eating less and exercising more often. I never ran 10 km in my entire life until after I turned 40.
Argh. Excuse the typos — posted from my iPhone.
One does not become and stay more conservative by stuffing their mouth with junk food. I thought that conservatives were for questioning the authority – guess that does not apply to the authority of food industry after all.
It’s not the calories that are scary at the fast food places – it’s what substance those calories come in and what is added for taste, colour and flavour.
I don’t know what McDonalds adds to their products because I don’t eat there. But I know that all processed foods contain sugar substitutes and free processed glutamic acid in different variations. Those two are carcinogenic neurotoxins, that cause harm and elevate allergies and inflammations.
The sheer amount and tone of insults that usually follows makes me wonder – who do those cyber-bullies calling me crazy and idiot work for. Aren’t conservatives for freedom of speech? I don’t insult anyone for eating processed junk food – why then you guys go out of your way to discredit and silence my point of view?

Here’s the beauty of it — go to their Web site and look it up. McDonald’s goes out of their way to provide excellent nutritional info about all of their products on their site. You can break a Big Mac down by the patty, bun, cheese slice, sauce, etc. If there’s something in a product that you don’t want to eat, ask them to hold it, or just order something different.
I’m on a fairly restricted diet and I can order from their menu safely thanks to all the healthy options they’ve added. I’ve been to organic, garden market type restaurants that aren’t nearly as accommodating.
I eat at McDonald’s because they offer healthy options that fit my new health-centric lifestyle. If they didn’t, I’d take my business elsewhere.

Those were 2 very informative pics.
Just my opinion but despite appearances being trivial…you really do look more intelligent in the second pic.
I fit more into Snagglepuss midset. My staple breakfast had always involved oatmeal porrige but for whatever reason it now causes heartburn…go figure. I have found that a bowl of honeynut O’s with cold milk settles heartburn…again go figure. A coupla tablespoons of ground flax in a glass of warm milk starts my day….emphasis on ground—flax has an extremely tough seed coat which defeats digestion….sorta like feeding whole shelled corn to cattle…
Eh, let’s be honest. Anyone who plumps up to the size I was at (or larger) is stupid, lazy, or both. A smarter person would have turned down the second and third helpings.
I’ve to admit, discovering a responsible moving company within the Chicago-land area wasn’t as effortless as it sounds. I called a ton of them and made them answer some pretty particular questions. I determined that the much more I inquired as to their abilities and strategies, the a good deal more defensive they all got. I about gave up unitl I uncovered 1 that was more patient with me and my questions than I was. They were amazing.
