Mark Steyn gives an funny, eloquent, stirring, and ultimately important speech (MP3, audio only, *very* quick loading for those on slow connections) in front of an audibly delighted audience at the Danish Free Press Society. A must-listen for SDA readers.
Ok, at minute 20 I had the unfortunate experience of having coffee come out my nose! A most unfavourable event.
Mark is priceless in this. Well worth the 30 minutes or so. You can skip ahead to around 7 minutes I think for the intro to be over.

With votes counted from 99% of Swedish districts, the far-right Sweden Democrats had won 5.7% of the votes. Jimmie Akesson, the SD party’s 31-year-old leader, said the result was historic.
Much of the focus in Sweden’s election campaign has surrounded the party’s populist campaign against immigration, particularly of Muslims, and the party believes Sweden’s liberal immigration policies have failed and are putting social and economic strains on the country.

Very much like patriotic Tea Party Americans very concerned about the federal government’s multi-culti-worshiping refusal to secure America’s southern border, bringing in millions and millions of illegal aliens, and the severe negative consequences.
Ya think its the increased traffic at SDA due to a link at WUWT that the page is overloaded? I’ll keep raging against the machine.
Mark Steyn is a very humorous guy , but he is really revved up in this speech in Copenhagen.

i attended the Vancouver steyn/Mcleans trial in vancouver and was fortunate in having a brief private word with Steyn after the 4th day of the ‘proceedings’… we both shared an understanding of the absurdly comic ‘multicultural legitimacy’ of the Islamic offensive being directed against western values…and a belief in how this dire predicament could not have moved forward so far without the aid of po-faced gutless elites that have not the sense nor ability nor the inclination to recognize or consider the problem much less address it in any remotely prescriptive fashion…
i’m an optimist of course…one thing or another or some thing out of left field will coalesce understanding….. a harder than usual rain is inevitably en route…WE are the good and virtuous of that there is no doubt
and so it is a great time to be alive!
I’m listening to the Sappho awards ceremony and was wondering how much 20,000 Danish krona are in American dollars. Apparently, it amounts to $3507.55, so Mark’s not making million$ off accolades of his writing! The photo of Mark while listening to his introduction reveals, however, his humility — who would know?!
Wow! I’m really impressed with Eva Agnete Selsing who introduces Mark. ‘Fantastic commentary. ‘Plugged in. ‘Humorous. ‘Informed. She mentions Judaism and Christianity and how our cultural amnesia — forgetting that our Western Civilization is based on the foundational values and principle of Judeo-Christiany — might well be the death of us. (‘Lovely to hear “my” thesis so eloquently defended! ‘Lovely, also, to hear Mark’s reference to Ezra Levant.)
“Muslim is the new gay” is brilliant because it makes you laugh but it’s true. Mark’s remarks on having sex with your sheep and it being a sin if you then eat it were hilarious.
You can’t parody what’s happening these days in the defense of Islam by the wimpish West. Thank God for people like Steyn and Levant and Kate and BCF and Kathy Shaidle, etc. They’re not falling for anything because they’re standing up and speaking out about what the HELL is actually going on.
As Mark says, Islam is not beyond criticism.

“It’s so tolerant, it will tolerate anything.” (Another way of putting this is, “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.”) That’s a reference to what’s happening everywhere in the West today, under the left and the liberals. ‘No standards, in other words (that’s my take on it). “The King of multiculturalism has no clothes!”

What is coming down across the Western democracies is spending cuts. That is like Kryptonite to a progressive because it means they can’t buy votes with their identity politics of divide and conquer.
But yes that “far right” comment actually means the MSM is so into cultural relativism that any hint of enough confidence in your own culture is deemed to be “far right” if you want to control your border. Obama is suing AZ for doing that.
When straying away from the Mark Steyn speech there was a Danish TV interview with Mark and when he kept going on about Europe being demographically “finished”; the anchor asked how that can be when Muslims are only having 3.5 kids. Mark said “do the math, your home base culture is only having 1.2 kids, so in a couple of generations it’s over”. The announcer’s jaw dropped and he had to ask the question again for it to sink in.

WOW, that’s rhretoric at its most powerful: toward the end, that long long list of situations and events that offend Islam. Amazing.
I too met Steyn in Beverly Hills of all places. To give you an idea how far back it was, while I had read all his columns from day one of the National Post, I had never heard his voice (I was shocked). It was at the Claremont Institute’s annual Churchill Dinner at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel and Steyn was the keynote speaker. When I arrived at the pre-dinner cocktail hour (barely recovered from 5×4 oz martinis the night before), there was Steyn standing in the middle of the room … alone. Steyn, un-attended, un-mobbed. I sauntered over to say what an honour it was to meet him and chatted with him for a few minutes before a small group gathered around him. The speech was wonderful and he was certainly mobbed afterwards. As an aside, a very hot young woman came over to my table and asked if she could introduce me to her table. LOL. You see, I have more than a passing resemblance to Dick Cheney which has been pointed out to me on numerous occassions, even at the opera!
Steyn is a genius.

a blow of the eye and his demeanour told me he was an intensely sincere but obviously misguided young feller…
once he heard me ask if he felt he’d underestimated notwithstanding present circumstances the common sense force of common law and free speech his eyes first then his turning on his heel and walking off gave me his answer…
i reckon he’s unstable and conflicted…but whether he has the guts or the intelligence to grow into a modern man?..i dunno…

Re: Sweden
It is totally wrong to describe SD as right of center party. Apart from being anti-immigration (not anti-immigrant), it is essentially a old-style social democratic party.
Note also that the SD voters came largely from the social democrats, who lost most, while the right of center Alliance increased their share.

Frankly I think Steyn is more fun to listen to than Limbaugh these days, and that’s really saying something. He’s got a wider range of scope than just the USA, and he’s more relevant to Canada as a result.
