  1. Tks for the Bach theme this eve EBD.
Another noteworthy performance by Gould playing Bach is a technical masterpiece known as the “”Gouldberg” Variations”
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3qEL21zvCg
    From “La Scena Musicale”
    http://www.scena.org/lsm/sm3-1/sm3-1goldberg-eng.html
“Undoubtedly the most famous of all recordings of the Goldberg Variations, or of any Bach keyboard work for that matter, is Glenn Gould’s 1955 debut (Sony SMK 52594). The technical display is otherworldly. The Gould camp is split as to whether Gould’s 1955 recording is better than his more mathematical re-appraisal of the work recorded in 1981, shortly before his death (Sony MK 37779). Many keyboardists prefer the 1955 recording for its sheer technique, while the 1981 release is generally considered more mature and colorful.”

  2. Thanks for those two links, folks. MUCH appreciated!
Reminds me of something I read yesterday and was going to ask about on here. A commentator on the Althouse blog said that ever since Sept. 11th, 2001 he stopped getting the bulk of his news from the TV and instead got it through blogs, which of course link to “official” news stories. I suddenly realized that this was pretty much the same for me as well.
I’m curious if you mostly get your news from blogs like SDA and if so, when did this begin?

  3. From England, aka the bottomless well of nanny-state curiosities:
Council bosses are being asked to imagine they are English economic migrants in the fictitious region of Sindia, or go on an ‘adventure in Lesbianandgayland’ as part of publicly-funded training sessions on equality and diversity.
“More than 30 managers from Brighton and Hove City Council have been on the two-day ‘Leading on Diversity’ course in the past year – at a cost of several thousand pounds…”

  4. Sera, I’m listening to some Virgil Fox selections right now – I’ll post something next week. Thanks for the suggestion.

  5. Robert W. (and didn’t Krista Branch sing at Glenn Beck’s Restoring Honor get together? She seems a recent discovery too)
It’s been a few years for me. It started when the collapse of our civilization didn’t materialize on 1.01.2000, as promised… and it’s really accelerated since 9.11 … I’ve found that the only time I read a paper newspaper now is in a cafe, although I do enjoy that, it’s just not relevant anymore, although I have relatives that work at The Herald here, and their printed circulation is down by almost 50% over the past few years, although still profitable. There’s about an hour of home reno type/home disaster Tv shows I can tolerate. But what I miss is… being up to date on the gossip that others talk about, I’m simply clueless as to some topics I should be aware of, like this “global warming” and how I MUST save the planet. It’s not like I idle the car or leave all the lights on just for the hell of it, I’m a conservative and think that minimizing waste is something worth doing, more so if I can save money while at it. It’s just that I’d prefer to shoot back at those that tell me I MUST bla bla bla… and has happened in some US jurisdictions, where people are being fined for not sorting recyclables correctly. It’s the new way of living in Toronto, I can’t imagine that happening here, so it’s about 2 years distant still.

  6. EBD @ 12:12 a.m.: “Diversity training” is one of the major ways in which cultural Marxism is spread. We’ve seen even the police fall victim, with the result that extremist, violence-advocating marchers have been given free rein while the opposing anti-violence protesters (like Ezra Levant and Kathy Shaidle at different times) have been told to move on or face charges or other difficulties. Back in the 1960s the leftists hated the “pigs”, but now they recruit them to do their dirty work.

  7. The O’narcissist “crumbling” was foreseen here* before the US election:
“*Barack Obama – Narcissist or Merely Narcissistic?
    >>> Sam Vaknin, Ph.D. – 8/13/2008″
“*This is his sole legacy: a massive post-traumatic stress disorder.”
Liberal Ziffy’s O’Harvard buddy’s “electoral coalition” is dissolving like the proverbial snowball in hell.
Ziffy’s Separatist Coalition is a loser because of the nature of political coalitions; unstable, born of expediency; doomed to death from unstable egos who craft the bombs to destroy their creation.

    …-
    “Obama’s electoral coalition is crumbling
“The swing voters who turned out in droves to support the president aren’t likely to back his party in November. Even core supporters express unhappiness with Democrats.”
“Nearly two years ago, the political world could only marvel at the breadth of voter support for Barack Obama.
The new president had won over voters once thought to have abandoned his party for good. He’d found new reservoirs of support among groups many thought were tapped out.
He energized a coalition — made up of blacks, women, Latinos, young voters and large numbers of suburbanites — that some believed would keep Democrats in power for years to come.”

    *O’narcissist:
“The “small people”, the “rank and file”, the “loyal soldiers” of the narcissist – his flock, his nation, his employees – they pay the price. The disillusionment and disenchantment are agonizing. The process of reconstruction, of rising from the ashes, of overcoming the trauma of having been deceived, exploited and manipulated – is drawn-out. It is difficult to trust again, to have faith, to love, to be led, to collaborate. Feelings of shame and guilt engulf the erstwhile followers of the narcissist. This is his sole legacy: a massive post-traumatic stress disorder.”

  8. [quote]Asked after the speech about Butts’ suggestion that Rangel is a more important leader in his party than the president, Rangel, who used a portion of his speech to laud President Obama for health care reform, joked that two days before his toughest primary challenge in years, he’s not going to decline any praise [/quote]
Why would anyone think that an American Black would be more important than a UN African Black that slipped into America through a back door, (his mother) and got the free lunch…
How many blacks in Obama’s Admin are American Blacks with connections to Slavery?
    Kick his ass… Charlie!!!

  9. I’m reminded why I’ve been thinking of cancelling my Maclean’s subscription:
    http://www2.macleans.ca/2010/09/03/the-politics-of-venom-and-accusation/
Paul Wells bleating on about polarization of the Canadian electorate, Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s fault, of course . I’m surprised Wells didn’t lay the blame on George Dubya.
He, does, however go one step further. Here’s the headline: What Stephen Harper has in common with Glenn Beck.
Yup, they’re both nasty and they both wear glasses. They’re twins! Separated at birth!

  10. Have You Seen Todays Toronto Sun?
Ignatieffs former cheif Ian Davey say’s anyone who Reads the Toronto Sun is “Iliterate”.
This apparently on CTV’s question period yesterday
    **The comments are Priceless

  11. Batb i have not had a chance to check the ctv.ca question period & only red a little of the article cause Iam too iliterate.lol
You have to look at the comments to the article there are also related articles.

  12. bryanr, I couldn’t find the articles, only the videos, so there weren’t any comments. When you go to the page with the articles and comments, go to the top www address window (on my screen, at the top left), pull your mouse across the whole www address to highlight it, right click which will give you a drop-down menu, then click COPY, then go to the SDA comment window, right click your mouse, and click PASTE.
Voila, you’ve let everyone know what the link address is, so that they can highlight it, copy it, and paste it into a new address window … 😉

  13. This article, “The Judeo-Christian Idea and the Struggle for Humanity”, by Ed Lasky, who is interviewing author, David Brog, is posted at American Thinker. Here are a few excerpts:
“David Brog has written a compelling book, “In Defense of Faith; The Judeo-Christian Idea and the Struggle for Humanity” that is a passionate rebuttal to those critics that assault the Judeo-Christian tradition as a source of evil and who do not credit it as the wellspring of so much of what is good and noble in the Western world.
David Brog: “Critics of Christianity such as Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins (and a myriad of others, including much of the liberal media commentariat) have been very active in disparaging Judeo-Christian ethics and morality. This has given rise to defenders such as British columnist [and Jew] Melanie Phillips, whose book “The World Turned Upside Down [The Global Battle over God, Truth and Power”, published by Encounter, April 2010], I reviewed earlier in the year. Now David Brog [also a Jew] joins the battle for the defense of the West. The West has been built on the moral and ethical foundations laid down by Jews and Christians over the centuries; there are many — within and without Western societies — who would like these foundations to crumble . . .
“But when it comes to our morality — especially the way we treat our fellow human beings — the Judeo-Christian tradition has been our only reliable guide. We need to understand that the values we hold most dear — those which even the leading atheists hold most dear — come from this faith tradition and in fact have no other source . . .
“The fact is that believing Christians have led every major human rights struggle in the West, and the rank-and-file of these efforts have come from the churches and synagogues. In particular, I’m talking about the effort to fight the genocide and ethnic cleansing of the American Indian in both North and South America, the struggle to end the slave trade and then slavery itself in both Britain and the United States, our own civil rights movement, and the current campaign to combat the debt and disease of the third world, particularly Africa. It’s a tragedy that these stories have been edited out of our history books and banished from our classrooms. We’re all impoverished as a result . . .”
The emphasis is on evangelical Christians, and the author laments the fact that the last, allowable Western prejudice, it seems, is directed against this group (with anti-Semitism, unfortunately, rearing its ugly head again). As a recent convert to the Roman Catholic Church, I think it’s an oversight to think that Catholics aren’t equally—or worse—treated than evangelicals! These Christians share many convictions: in the unprecedented and very important 1994 manifesto, “Evangelicals and Catholics Together”, such Catholics as Fr. Richard John Neuhaus and evangelicals as Chuck Colson stated what beliefs and goals they share. Both groups made a strong case for their right to be fully active in the public square. In this secular, selfish age, the Christian Church and observant Christians have been ridiculed and marginalized—given the Alinsky “Rules for Radicals” treatment: “Pick the Target, Freeze It, Personalize It and Polarize It” big time. If people weren’t so ignorant of Christian history—Brog largely exonerates the Christian Church from the worst outcomes of the Crusades and the Inquisition: their histories are “nuanced” (get that, lefties!)—maybe Christians and our Judeo-Christian foundation would be treated with more respect in this society.

  14. Thanks for that, lookout. We can’t remind people enough.
Thanks for the link, bryan r! You’re welcome!!

“In Ad Wars, Democrats Shy From Ties to Own Party
Representative Mark Schauer of Michigan does not dwell on the legislation he has voted for during his first term in Congress, which includes the Democratic stimulus plan and health insurance overhaul. But he reminds his constituents what he has fought against, declaring, “I must ask myself 10 times a day, what is Washington thinking?””
“… a look at the advertising themes and images being employed by Democrats shows all the ways they are trying to personalize their contests and avoid being defined as ideological partners of President Obama’s or as part of the Washington establishment.”

Representative Glenn Nye of Virginia does not mention in his television advertisements that he is a Democrat. But he expresses a deep worry about the national debt, saying, “I stood up to my party leaders and voted no.”
Representative Suzanne M. Kosmas of Florida looks straight into the camera during her latest commercial and declares, “People in this district are mad, and I’m mad, too.”
The advertisements from these three vulnerable Democrats offer a window into the party’s strategy to try to keep control of the House in November at a moment when Republicans and their allies are substantially outspending Democrats and their backers.

  18. Maz, there’s nothing resembling a ‘pc filter’ at SDA. The word “insurance” is inevitably (i.e automatically and without human jury-ing) caught in the spam filter, along with “viagra”, “poker”, and a few other words. Your tips/links are always fully appreciated, in an ongoing way, and never (humanly) censored.

  19. Yes, EBD, compliments on your practice of highlighting an earlier link with a re-linking.
Thanks lookout. Printed, will re-read later. Ed Lasky never disappoints.
Goldberg Variations: Burning question. Which one, the 1955 (?) or the 1982? The latter for my money. The Aria especially. I acquired that CD — er, cassette — for a drive to Whistler one blue-sky day and had what would loosely be called a religious experience. So much so, that today, a wiser motorcycle-man, I would consider that stunt dangerous.
batb: For about 4 weeks, Sentry (formerly batb)?
Black Mamba: What was your earlier handle? BTW, I’m reading Paul Johnson’s History of the Jews which I started and abandoned, and just re-started with great enjoyment.

  20. lookout: As mentioned at 11:27, I’m reading Paul Johnson’s History of the Jews. Superb.
So much so, that, finally, I’m resolved to read the Bible after. Growing up Catholic in a parochial school system in NFLD, there was very little focus on the Bible. Being religiously illiterate, I never knew why.

I wonder if anyone besides their newsprint supplier will notice……

  22. Me No Dhimmi, Paul Johnson’s always a worthwhile read. And so is the Bible!
I think your idea to read it is very fine. (Besides the Bible’s spiritual content, it’s acknowledged as a superior work of literature.) And, even though I hear it regularly at Mass and have probably sung hundreds of thousands of words from the Bible—I sang in chamber and church choirs for three decades and have sung hymns my whole life (I’m a little older than you are)—I should read the Bible more on my own time. (So, that’s a good challenge for me!)
I’d also suggest you check out John Henry Cardinal Newman, a truly superb intellect and prose stylist. Pope Benedict—another towering intellect (and a very cultured, humble man)—is going to beatify Newman in Birmingham this coming Sunday, September 19, which makes Newman one step closer to sainthood. Deo gratias.
    Happy reading!
