Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York, says of those who with heartbreaking bravery went into the towers: “We do not honor their lives by denying the very constitutional rights they died protecting.”
Mr. Mayor, the firemen, the police, the EMTs and the paramedics who rushed into those buildings, many of them knowing that they would die there, did not do so to protect constitutional rights. They went often knowingly to their deaths to protect what the Constitution itself protects: people, flesh and blood, men and women, mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, sisters and brothers. Although you yourself may not know this, they did.
The choice is not between abandoning them or abandoning the Constitution, for although the liberties the Constitution guarantees sometimes put us at a disadvantage even of self-preservation, they also make it possible for 300 million Americans to prevail—reasonably, peacefully, and within the limits of the law—against provocations such as this.
They make it possible to prevent the construction of the mosque at this general location—with no objection whatsoever to, but rather warm encouragement of, its construction elsewhere—not by force or decree but by argument, persuasion, and peaceable assembly. These are rights that the Constitution guarantees as well, and clearly it is one’s constitutional right to oppose the mosque, not to participate in the building of it, and to convince others of the same.
Meanwhile, in a CNN interview;
… Rauf indicated that the movement of the GZM away from Ground Zero must be rejected: Even if done out of a sense of propriety and sensitivity, he said, it would be perceived by “extremists” as an attack on Islam and therefore result in a spate of violence worse than the rioting over the Danish cartoons, threatening “our national security.”
Burn the Koran riots; don’t burn the Koran minor riots.
Move the Mosque location, riots and death to America. Build the Mosque on ground zero; we kill you in the normal boring fashion you are accustomed too.
Are western citizens any safer if the Koran is not burned and the victory mosque is built on ground zero? About as safe as they have been since 9/11, only this time the US has told the entire Islamic world that it will submit to Islam without a realistic whimper. Mere encouragement that treats of violence is all that is need on a grand scale now. Time to up the ante.

It’s beyond preposterous and offensive that anyone suggests that a center directly connected to the religion of those monsters who carried out this horrific action nine years ago be located remotely close to this area.

Bloomberg and Obama so vehemntly defending religous freedom and not qualifying it and then failing to mention right of dissent, demonizing them as bigots, narrow minded etc. This extended to the pastor Jones, who while too extreme for my taste, has a right to say what he said and woulod have had a right to do it.
While Obama felt no need to use “moral suasion” or “jawboning” about the Mosque, he had no reservations using those tools for the others. The action and inaction are telling, and profoundly depressing.

This is what happens when America mortgages itself to others. They need Saudi and China much more than those countries need America. Many of America’s citizens have reached the “mad as hell and I’m not taking it anymore” stage. What’s not clear is how many are actually prepared to sacrifice enough to create the strength needed to pull themselves back on their feet.
I’ve said this before, the Victory Mosque will be the issue upon which the Obama Presidency implodes. The Wiz of ‘O is not listening to most of his nation. He doesn’t feel or believe the same as those that are trying to re-ignite their nation’s spirit.
If Korans burn today, it’s not meant to catch the attention of muslims (the radicals don’t care, they’ll continue to attack irregardless). It’s meant to catch the attention of America’s weak leadership. Either support America and the sacrifices of its citizens or get out of the way.

It is utterly irrelevant who initiated this tipping point, where Americans can finally move out of the smog and glue of political correctness and confront reality. The reality of Islamism as, not a religion but a political and social agenda. An agenda that is the antithesis of democracy and freedom and is pure totalitarianism.
The MSM has been right to publicize it. Note also, how Obama has only shown his emotion, and as a narcissist he lacks empathy for others, but he’s shown his emotion only for Islam. The Koran burning is an act by Americans stating that they reject this political and social agenda; that they are fully aware that this agenda is pretending it is a religion, and using religion as its Trojan Horse to slither into the US. The Koran burning is an act of rejection – and it will spread. It is important that it is a ground roots activity.
Notice, by the way, the different approaches outlined above. The first approach by Helprin is democratic, where you have a point of view and you will try to persuade, using reason, others to this view.

The fact that they’ve threatened “worse” violence, means that the U.S. and the rest of the world are prepared and need to hit back with all the force they can. If not, these bullies will continue to hold us to Sharia Law and they’ll continue to up the ante.
They’ve upped the ante with this mosque and they need to be confronted. So far, the confrontation is with “argument, persuasion, and peaceable assembly,” which seems not to have moved them one iota. I worked for Mike Bloomberg and in our meetings he liked to make digs at the supposed small mindedness of Americans. He is a smart guy but unfortunately for too many smart people they think their individual intelligence is superior to the collective intelligence of the country so, therefore, a cultural elite need to lead and the rest have to follow.
But it’s pretty apparent on this mosque issue and that very lame speculation of his that the Times Square bomber might be someone opposed to Obamacare that Bloomberg’s smarts don’t extend much beyond knowing how to run a financial data company.

I think a close look at trade with China shows that China is far, far, more dependent on the US than vice versa, and the same with Saudi Arabia.
US purchasers of Chinese goods offer them payment in US dollars, take it or leave it. They demonstrate, every day of the year, they will take them. If they convert dollars to Chinese currency, they lose worse than they do if they buy US securities, because the Chinese currency would continually rise in value, eventually making Chinese goods more costly in dollar terms.
Chinese goods are presently bought because they are cheap. Would they still be the cheapest, if they cost twice as much? The Chinese know that the better option is simply to not convert the dollars to Chinese currency. They simply use them to buy dollar denominated securities.
China buys US securities because it is best for them, and for no other reason.
The fact that Obama and his staff are so confused by the real world, that they don’t understand China’s actions, and so, feel they must kowtow to the Chinese is an indicator of their confusion as to how the world works, nothing more. So long as China depends on US trade, they will buy US securities.
The same argument applies to the Saudis. Does anyone really think the Saudis can survive even a year without pumping the large volumes they do?
Of course, none of this is necessarily an argument for deficit spending financed by borrowing. The interest theh US pays is pure waste, and almost the largest item in the Federal budget. It also is a rationale the politicians use for raising taxes. The deficit must be eliminated very quickly, and the yearly borrownig of 100’s of billions must end, or existing businesses will flee the US, and US investment will shift overseas. If the deficit is not ended, the US will have double digit unemployment in perpetuity, and the years 2009-2010 will be remembered as good economic times.

Obama is fading into insignificance. The Democrats are going to have to get rid of him. BUT, what is going on now, is a growing Taking Back America from the groundroots. People are rejecting statist economics and health care – and are rejecting political correctness and multiculturalism to confront evil.

What can’t these people understand. They wouldn’t let you build a church or forbid a synagogue in Mecca. Why a mosque at ground zero? Rauf’s statement about violence if the center is moved seems to be a throwing down of the gauntlet. I hate to say it but if the GZM remains at or near ground zero, because of Rauf’s statements, then the terrorists will have won by threats of violence. Is this the religion of peace? And how is America the land of the free and the home of the brave going to respond to threats?

Someone explain to me why the mosque must be built there.
We’ve heard middling little lies but the real matter is that Ground Zero is a “victory” (if one wishes to use that term) for Islamofascists. By building that mosque, one would mark Islamic triumphalism and embolden the very people who would so callous as to kill innocent people. The absurd charge of bigotry doesn’t stand when one thinks what freedoms EVERYONE in the US enjoys.
This can’t be said enough.
They’ve upped the ante with this mosque and they need to be confronted. So far, the confrontation is with “argument, persuasion, and peaceable assembly,” which seems not to have moved them one iota. If these peaceable tactics don’t suffice, and extremist Muslims go on the rampage, the rest of us are on notice. We need to do something other than wring our hands and go into politically correct, multicultural, surrender-monkey mode.
YES, batb: that exactly describes my view. I can barely believe that after 61 years of non-violence, I wanna rumble. I really really do! When I saw those skyward arses on that captured Paris street and now, after hearing Mohammedan Rauf’s very thinly disguised threat, I thought ‘surely now, the world will see that Mohammedan outreach and dialogue is the blackest of black jokes’.

You, sir, have never spoken a truer sentence in your life. That summarizes precisely why I turned against the Iraq and A’stan wars. Blood and treasure squandered overseas by puke-inducing elites who are SURRENDERING on the home front. And I’m sorry to say, I include Bush in that grouping.
Finally, I recently read that a certain Professor Ahmed made the MSM rounds with the BIG LIE agitprop that the Founding Fathers were fond of Islam and the Koran. This professor, evidently, was an advisor to Patraeus.

I’m with you. Just tell me where to be and what I need to do, to counter this utter madness. You know what? I think far too many people have far too few kids these days … what I mean by that, is when you have kids (not substitute dogs, cats, gerbils, and boa constrictors), that’s when you really get into the protective mode.
Today, most spoiled and entitled North Americans have nothing to die for. I, being a mother, would die for my children if they were attacked. I’d definitely go on the defensive BIG TIME if my kids’ lives were endangered by an aggressor. We don’t seem to have that fighting spirit anymore. It’s been stamped out by surrender-monkey, let’s-just-be-nice-politically-correct-multicultural politicians, educators, and even comfy-with-the-status-quo clerics.
Fight or flight? At this juncture in history, I’ll fight thanks. I don’t want my daughters and granddaughters in burqas or my male cousins’ boys paying jizya.

This gets back to my point – Jones (a media savvy idiot) is expected to be reasonable, but Rauf is given a free pass – because he’s of the weaker set, the minority.
Not smart, really.
So far the jist of Mr. Rauf’s statements has been,
“Let us build the GZM or we will knock down some more of your tall buildings.”
What idiot would even consider buying into such utter contempt and open threats?
The leaders are behaving like spineless wonders…they have already morally evacuated.

I am looking at a cartoon published by the local paper today. It is drawn by Dolighan of Dolighan.com. I notice it is given first prominence on that website.
Sept is in bold. Two figures stand to form the number 11. On the left is a likeness of presumably Pastor Jones with a gss can marked “hate” and a book marked QU’RAN. The next figure is of presumable a Islamist figure. He holds a sign saying “Death to America”. Underneath is a terse statement “…Men Of God??
If read in another sense this is what we face. To threaten to burn a book as opposed to threatening terrorism and death are equated. It is a propaganda war. This the supporters of militant, violent, Islam appear to have won.
I have read various holier than thou pieces in the print media. It is Jones this and Jones that…..”please somebody do something and stop this man”. One can almost sense a panic here. I jibe at these “stout” defenders of Western Civilization. Enjoy your hissy fit, then sink a brew of your choice- “See what a good boy am I,” they quoth, as they admire their hit pieces on Jones.

President Obama and Mayor Michael Bloomberg both spoke out in support of our project. As I traveled overseas, I saw firsthand how their words and actions made a tremendous impact on the Muslim street and on Muslim leaders. It was striking: a Christian president and a Jewish mayor of New York supporting the rights of Muslims. Their statements sent a powerful message about what America stands for, and will be remembered as a milestone in improving American-Muslim relations.
