Reader Tips

The 1958 wide screen extravaganza South Pacific was an adaptation of the highly successful Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical, set during WWII, which centered around the culturally-conflicted romance between a French Plantation owner who had fled his country and a Navy nurse from Arkansas stationed on the unnamed South Pacific island.
Tonight’s amusement en route to the Tips, a musical number from one of the film’s subplots, sees a wily, scheming, and avaricious Tonkinese peddler named Bloody Mary trying to pressure U.S. Marine Lt. Joseph Cable into marrying her daughter Liat. Bloody Mary would later attempt to emotionally blackmail Cable by informing him (in a calculated, premeditated rage, before storming off with her daughter in hand) that Liat will now have to marry an older Frenchman instead, but first she guilefully tries to appeal to his dreams of an idyllic existence on the neighbouring, mist-shrouded island of Bali Hai, where the mother and daughter live, by encouraging him to keep dreaming, to distract himself with pleasant thoughts, and to keep talking Happy Talk.

  1. Here’s a very entertaining video featuring Michael Savage talking with a caller named “Saif”. After listening to it, I have a serious question which I don’t know the answer to:
From what Saif says, how can one tell if he is:
    – A Moderate Muslim
    – A Radical Muslim
    Theories?

  2. For those not on Twitter, I gotta recommend you sign up, if only to see the vile crap tossed at Ezra Levant daily by those oh so inclusive and tolerant lefties.
One of the nicer things he was called today was “sewer rat”.
In each and every case, he has handed the progressive darlins their backsides tied up in a bow.

  3. Robert, Ezra spells it out here, in a stunning, no-hold-barred column.
    *Ouch*.
    Shocking, really. Who knew?
    Remarkably damning stuff.

  4. I never liked Soros because of his backing of the despicable Media Matters but had NO IDEA about all the other stuff. I wonder if he’s just generally a vile person or if his more recent political activities are some sort of misguided penance for his work with the Nazis? I ask this question sincerely, as I’m aware that the reason most American Jews vote for the Democrats is because they’ve convinced themselves that the Republicans are more closely associated with the Nazis. Not true, of course, but we know that Facts and the Liberal Mind don’t often like to associate with one another.
Ezra Levant’s editorial motivated me to publish this.

“(CBS) With many polls indicating the Republicans may win back control of the House of Representatives (and possibly the Senate as well) in the upcoming mid-term elections, Jim VandeHei, the executive editor of Politico, told CBS’ “Face the Nation” that the Obama administration is in a horrible position.
“Does the White House understand this?” asked guest host Harry Smith. “Do you feel any sense of panic or concern” on the part of the administration?
“They get it. There’s panic. There’s concern,” VandeHei said. “The reality for this administration stinks, politically and practically, when it comes to the economy. You’re not going to be able to change that 9.6-percent unemployment figure. You can’t get anything from Congress in the next couple of months.”
CBS Congressional correspondent Nancy Cordes said the Democrats are distancing themselves from President Obama.

“In Pakistan, killing the infidel means other Muslims
Time reports on one of the most gruesome details coming out of Pakistan. It turns out that religious minorities in that country, especially Muslim minorities are being attacked with impunity and are being denied relief from the devastating floods. Thirty one Shiites were slaughtered, and more than 200 wounded in three Sunni terrorist bombings earlier this week. “A senior Pakistani security official told TIME that the attacks were ordered by Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, a Sunni extremist group with deep ties to al-Qaeda and the Pakistani Taliban. For such groups, it is not only legitimate to attack other Muslim sects but even a virtue to do so during Islam’s holy month of Ramadan.”
Another Muslim minority sect, the Ahmedi, have also been attacked as well as denied relief aid. “As the floodwaters submerged vast tracts of southern Punjab, some 500 Ahmedi families were among those driven from their homes and forced to seek shelter in makeshift camps. But unlike the other flood victims, they were denied access to relief aid, members of the community and human rights groups say. “The local mullahs told the civil administration not to give them any help,” says Shahid Ataullah, a senior member of the Ahmedi community. “They said, ‘You don’t dare do this. These people should be left to fend for themselves because they are non-Muslims.'””

  8. Thanks for picking up the slack EBD. Was waaaay past my bedtime!
Logged into twitter this morning to see that one of the darlins, who proudly wears his NDP tag on twitter, finally jumped the shark and called Ezra “Christ Killer”. Took linger than expected really.
About half way through the whole deal last night, Ezra tweeted to Dr Roy and BC Blue that all the folks that had called him a liar would be back shortly trying to justify Soros’ actions. Well after they finished their googling, you got to read comments like this, “show me how anyone might’ve acted differently” and “Did he have any active role? Not likely.”
Toward the end, he was asked if he had to put up with this crap in real life or were they only brave enough to do it over the net. Ezra’s reply,
“Glass half full: 10 rabid lefties have spread facts about Soros’s Nazi past to their 5,000 followers RT @wullu5: you put up with this crap?”

  9. “The 1958 wide screen extravaganza South Pacific was an adaptation of the highly successful Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical, set during WWII,”
And the musical was based on a book, “Tales of the South Pacific” by James Michener.
Michener’s book is a very interesting read, and the ensuing movie is a good example of Hollywood revisionism at work.

  10. Yeah I know, Dmorris, but I wasn’t writing a Wikipedia entry on the movie, I was briefly introducing a song from it. As for ‘revisionism’, South Pacific – the flamboyant musical song-and-dance extravaganza – was based on Michener’s obviously much grittier and more political and…less musical novel; it wasn’t an adaptation of it. The director wasn’t even allowed to let Bloody Mary say the word “bastard”, as she did in the stage production based on the book, because of the motion picture code, so…

  11. One of my favourites from South Pacific (a film I first saw when I was 9 years old, and knew all the lyrics to all of the songs) is Honey Bun:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYEdezKgbrk
Twin Soliloquies is poignant, but I can’t locate a YouTube of either Gaynor/Brazzi or Martin/Pinza singing it.
I’m curious as to why so many reprises these days of ’50s and ’60s musicals? Is it only the Boomers who are paying to see live theatre? Is nostalgia the only thing that sells these days?

  12. EBD I never knew that about Soros. I knew he was psycho but alas I have seen his attitude before. Some investors have it and in my mind the Public Sector Unions are up there too.
Before GM was re-named GM I remember talking about the deal in the coffee room. I said they will bankrupt the company. Her reply was ‘so what, management is at fault too.’ My reply was yeah, but they can do more than put on a wheel.

  13. Can one accurately describe Cynthia Tucker as anything other than a race-baiter?
I can easily imagine how in her own mind she thinks she’s doing a great public service by writing such things but in reality it just divides people into different silos – a long held specialty of the Left. 🙁

  14. The higher education bubble (with graph). This is based on US tuition but ours is probably similar.
“Note that the housing bubble resulted from about a 4-time increase in home prices between 1978 and 2006, and college tuition has now increased by more than twice that amount since 1978 – it’s gone up by more than a factor of ten times. The college tuition bubble makes the housing price bubble seem pretty lame by comparison.”
    via PJM-Back to School
The solution, of course, is to transfer the higher education burden to the taxpayer by “forgiving student debt entirely in exchange for a year of volunteer service in Canada or abroad.”

  15. The American Aristocracy:
Someone here tipped a Richochet podcast which included a returning Steyn, Lileks, etc.
In it, there was a reference to a very very very long-“serving” congressman, whose name I didn’t catch.
    Googling today I find it’s:
    John Dingell (D – Michigan): 54 years, 267 days.
And get this: he “inherited” the seat from his father who “served” 30 years.
So All in the Family 84 years of uninterrupted “service”.
One of America’s most urgent needs is term limits. Evidently, according to one poll, 75% of the public favour term limits which has one puzzled by the existence of Congressional Incumbentistan. Not that what the public favours has any relevance today.

  16. With the prices of Broadway tickets because of the union salaries and rules (orchestra, etc.) and taxes, it is mostly older people who can afford. Also people like good songs and most of the newer musicals barely come up with one tune you can hum.
I did like In the Heights because of the energy of the cast and there were lots of younger people in the audience, but the plot was a bit disjointed and you had to like somewhat hiphop, rap and salsa type music.

  17. ‘Me No Dhimmi’ – I agree that term limits are an excellent thing but I can’t ever see them being implemented federally because most all politicians oppose them. The only other solution, therefore, is for the electorate to stay actively involved in the election of their candidates. If a particular representative is voting differently from what one believes the majority of voters in his/her jurisdiction wants, then sufficient citizens need to rise up “to throw the bum out”.
Incidentally, during that Ricochet podcast this discussion with Paul Rahe was referred to by Peter Robinson. It’s WELL WORTH listening to!!!

  18. Thanks Robert W for the links. As we speak I’m tethered to my desk listening to the balance of the Richochet podcast, which was your link I believe?
Has Steyn’s stammering gotten worse and worse? Especially at sentence beginnings.
I certainly agree that the politicians won’t do term limits unprodded but maybe a grassroots movement could get this done. Clearly the Founding Fathers didn’t intend to install political dynasties in congress.
Dingell, btw, trails the Republican, so maybe that 84 year dynasty’s on its last legs.

  19. Nicola, I agree with both of the reasons you give for the musical retreads that are so popular now: $$$ and the fact that most newer musicals lack musicality, and seem to aim themselves at a narrow demographic.
I’ve never heard of In the Heights, but that’s probably because I’m not a fan of hip-hop, rap, or salsa!

  20. Further to that video I posted @ 3:51 PM:
@ 8:33 in the clip Jim Vandehei says: “I don’t understand how liberals can sit at home and feel that Obama has not done enough for them!”
Spoken by a true elitist who lives in a bubble and is completely out of touch with the common man.
