Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Wow, the MSM will be impressed to report that several hundred people came out to join the celebration.
It’s hard to ignore such numbers but the MSM will manage to do just that, all criticism with no relevance to anything but their supreme jealousy.
I wish I remembered where I saw the article…I actually saw one paper report that “the parks service quit estimating crowds after they were accused of underestimating the million man march”.
With no estimate of size.
Several hundred, Tregonsee? Don’t forget that the MSM will claim half of the ‘several hundred’ were counter-protesters or were out for the MLK anniversary.
wow…that’s so purty a picture !
Here’s a post I submitted on another site in an article concerning the Dem’s looming defeat this November…
____________________________
Ya see, there has been this big political movement in the last two years called The Tea Party. It was primarily a protest against large, all-encompassing government and the large, all-encompassing deficits, regulations, corporate welfare, and taxes that go with it. People felt that these things struck at the very heart of individual liberties.
The Democrats dismissed and insulted the people in the movement, calling them racists and Tea Baggers and so on. The Republicans — grudgingly, for Reagan was long dead — made some room for them.
Not too many people were actually involved in the Tea Party movement, but many Americans were sympathetic, and rather angry at how the Democrats had nothing but bad words to say about the movement, for many values of the movement were traditional American values.
So now Democrats are faced with the possibility of catastrophe at the polls this November, and wondering what could have gone wrong, and how American voters could be so stupid.
_____________________________
My guess is that the political deafness of the Dems will continue unabated.
And:
But, see the results (from the New York Times, for example:
And:
Those wily “MSM” reporters! They strove for accuracy again, trying to mislead Teabag wearers into thinking they often do that!
Maybe, if they reported a big crowd number, it’s because there was a small crowd, and they want to lull Tea Partiers into thinking they have real numbers, so they won’t be as active!
President made some speeches today. Yawn. His irrelevance was amongst the biggest of our wins today.
Here’s Palin’s speech from that rally.
“Look around, you’re not alone, you are Americans.”
http://www.palintv.com/2010/08/28/governor-palins-speech-at-the-restoring-honor-rally/
There’s green grass visible if you pan back far enough. If the shots properly show green grass on either side then there’s a case for “crowds were smaller than the organizers expected.” as the headline. Expect a little blurring of the image due to A) distance (to ensure that some grass is visible); and B) the need to ensure that no tech-savvy readers can run photo recognition software to do a headcount.
The Right Scoop has the complete 3 hour video via C-SPAN:
http://www.therightscoop.com/watch-glenn-becks-restoring-honor
It was an extremely… Protestant event. I can’t say I’m on board with a lot of Beck’s notions, but he irritates all the right people, so that’s good enough for me.
Funny bit:
I watched it on Facebook, and under the screen people across North America were chatting on a constantly updated feed.
Before the rally proper, the camera focuses on the podium as staffers milled around the stage.
However, at one point we could all hear the unseen Beck and his staff “behind the scenes,” making last minute preparations.
Needless to say, everyone using Facebook immediately recognized Beck’s voice, and (perhaps dreading a Face in the Crowd moment) started typing:
“Glenn, your mike is open!”
“Somebody tell Glenn his mic is on!!”
Sure enough about 30 seconds in we heard Beck say, “Guys, I hear my mic is on, can you fix it?”
🙂
PS:
Jim Treacher has dubbed the counter protest “Reverend Al’s Two Dozen Dude March”
http://pajamasmedia.com/eddriscoll/2010/08/28/you-go-to-war-with-the-tv-personalities-you-have/
I think the media should ask Louis Farakan and Al Sharpton to estimate the size of Becks crowd.
Kathy Shaidle wrote: “I can’t say I’m on board with a lot of Beck’s notions, but he irritates all the right people, so that’s good enough for me.”
Absolutely brilliant, Kathy, and I agree wholeheartedly! What you said echoes what Dennis Miller has often said about Sarah Palin, and I agree with that too. In point of fact, I maintain a political YouTube channel called “WeLoveSarahPalin”. Yes, it’s an absolutely silly name but it irritates all the right people – and you have NO IDEA just HOW MUCH it irritates them!!!
I posted this video on another thread but it’s worth reposting here for it perfectly echoes what others have said above about how the MSM (Obama sycophants) will do to spin this against Beck & the Tea Party.
The crowd was estimated at half a million. The Toronto Star reported that Beck was ‘a divisive TV personality’ and that his rally was ‘big on God but short on colour’ (ignoring Martin Luther King’s niece who spoke).
I noted that the esteemed Rev. Sharpton who held his MLK rally a few blocks away, and who is, ahh, a divisive personality – well, his rally was big on King and short on colour. It was all black.
I think it is very important to consider what Beck is doing. He is restoring to the American people, their faith in themselves. He’s telling them – you already have the foundation of ‘what is America’; it’s in the Constitution. The Constitution is founded on basic natural principles of individual strength, reason, equality, justice – which in turn rest on moral principles of ‘faith, hope and charity’.
Obama and the left have removed this faith-in-themselves from the people. Furthermore, Obama has rejected the Constitution, informing us that it is filled with ‘negative values’ and is an ‘evolving’ document.
Obama has insisted that his Hope and Change rests within a devotion to Him. Furthermore, his change is away from the basic American values. He’s gone around the world apologizing for the pre-Obama America.
And her permits no dissent, no questions, no criticism. He and the Democrats have rejected the Tea Parties, rejected the right and duty of Congress, i.e. the people, to read and debate His Bills. He has denied the power of the people.
What Beck is doing is switching this notion of ‘Hope’ from resting in Obama – and instead saying that it rests within each American – and that it is embedded in the values of the Constitution and the American way. Therefore Americans already have the strength to progress and develop – each and every person. They don’t need a Messiah, they don’t need a Welfare State, they have themselves.
That’s quite something. Can you imagine Obama, whose psychological aberration requires that he be The One in Control …can you imagine Obama telling Americans that they each have the power to Work and Progress, as individuals, ..and that this is a basic American characteristic? Never.
Obama came to power by selling himself to a mesmerized population as a messiah, an agent of change. Beck is telling them that they are each, every one of them, their own agents – and their duty is to think, to get the facts, and take charge of things – themselves.
This need to ‘feel strong about oneself’ is something that Obama has taken from Americans. Beck is restoring this. Quite something.
What an amazing rally! I am so encouraged!
Sarah Palin’s speech was inspiring, focusing on stories of three soldiers who overcame the odds and through mercy, grace, and service to others, came home from the battlefield. She used them to inspire Americans to believe in not so much themselves — although that IS important — but higher virtues of sacrifice and mercy, and the One who is the Author of all mercy and on Whom the U.S. people have always relied — their faith in the Judeo-Christian God, the God of their forefathers and mothers.
Although she didn’t once mention Obama, he and everything he believes — and doesn’t believe — were the counterpoint to everything she said: What the best in America believe and live, she was saying between the lines, Obama does not.
Half a million Americans coming together to raise America up is AWESOME! For no other reason than that they love their country, they love her heritage, and they know they’re at a crossroads: Stand up for America and the best of her values or lose the America bequeathed by their forebears.
God bless America!
“Aslan” is on the move!
I make it a quarter million plus based on the visible area half a mile long by a quarter wide; two thirds occupied by people at an average estimated density of 1 person per square yard.
I just read YET ANOTHER Leftist on YouTube tell me that this entire rally was:
1. Full only of white, racist Americans.
2. Directly connected with the KKK.
3. Out of touch with Mainstream Americans.
All false statements so common for the Mainstream Radical Left to state over & over & over again these days.
I Can See November from My Porch!
Come on, guys! Let’s not exaggerate! A CTV news headline reads “Conservative rally draws thousands on King anniversary.”
There couldn’t have possibly been more than two, maybe three thousand people at most, based on that headline! And the MSM is *never* wrong.
Wow
God, I love tea, nothing beats a tea party attended by a few of your closest friends!
God bless America, warts and all.
It kinf-of-reminds me of the time the unholy Alliiance tried to take over Canada. The LIEberals, Non Democradic Party and seperatest tried to unify and take power from the Cons who were just voted in. [I think they will try the same thing after the next election if there is a minority government.] The MSM under estimated the crowds. Yet, when Paralament was suspended for a few weeks, hundreds of protesters turned into thousands due to camera angles. Like the Olympics and G8 conferances, the MSM only looked for rioters and not one clip showing of peaceful demonstrators.
Same thing here, I think the “Big O” is starting to fear “thinking” Americans. Will be interesting election in November down there.
ET: Being a atheist myself (tho a very un-militant one and a great respecter of non-proselytising devouts (including many on this board, like batb), when I watch Beck I find myself wondering about your reaction.
While I like your summary, I don’t think Beck is trying to restore Americans’ faith in themselves, which if I hear him right, he thinks is a dead end. He repeatedly argues that you can’t get there without GOD, which makes this atheist a bit squirmy, believing that integrity and advanced moral development can occur without a belief in GOD. Confession: I’m not sure; I did have Catholic religious training in my youth. If you don’t mind my asking: did you?
Final conclusion: while I love Sarah Palin, her speaking voice really really drives me crazy. Give me Michele Bachman any day.
quite an enjoyable show today, I wish them well.
From the BBC, “Anger at US Conservative’s Rally” Anger, it’s all they see. … “Ten’s of thousands”
marginalize them, minimize their numbers, push them away from “our” spotlight ‘o BBC?
no link provided, let them drink my piss.
I’m an atheist myself buy have no problem with the God references. I actually like them. Christians built this place on solid values which I appreciate. I look at it as I’m not in your club but I like your rules.
Besides if I was ever in trouble I’d want Christians coming to my rescue. Not atheists.
Whatever the numbers, that is a huge – a significantly huge – crowd.
Right-wing Christians? Check. Race? Check.
The Toronto Star:
“Glenn Beck’s Washington rally big on God, short on colour.”
Saw this on Twitter made me laugh.
“Huge Al Sharpton rally today! No aircraft needed for crowd count. Local kid on skate board counted 122.”
Atlas Shrugs:
“The stated goal of the EDL is to oppose militant Islam and the sharia.
What’s wrong with that? Everything to the PC, leftist slaves in the media and the government.”
“For public safety, mounted police pushed people away from the Urban Gardens down Market Street, while other officers forced EDL members away from the barricade into the centre of the gardens.”
Say No! to Islam.
…-
“Smoke Bombs, Rocks, Thrown at English Defense League Rally Today”
“Chanting “give us our country back” and holding signs saying “no more mosques” and “no to sharia (law),” the EDL protesters were soon pushed back by police. The English Defence League was founded a year ago in Luton as a response to the vile Muslim protests hurling disgusting abuse at returning Brit soldiers. The stated goal of the EDL is to oppose militant Islam and the sharia.
What’s wrong with that? Everything to the PC, leftist slaves in the media and the government.”

Katie Couric’s propaganda firm (aka CBS News) is stating only 87,000 attended – a number surely designed to “sound sort of credible” but disparage the full significance of the event.
The focus on their website this evening is also very telling!
This is stolen directly from the top post at Ace of Spades HQ, which I know is lame of me, but jeebuz, somebody needs to rush this dinosaur to a vet, stat!…:

As a Christian and a conservative I am not a real big fan of this kind of rally. The impact of such events are so short lived as to be pointless. The fact is that conservatism has a lot of minds to change and a LOT of misinformation and bigotry to over come. Likewise Christianity which has yet to fully recover from the enlightenment after Christianity had become dogmatic and intellectually flaccid during its decades of dominance in the west.
Of course the fact that Beck is a Mormon NOT a Christian ….
me no dhimmi – I’m an atheist and no, I didn’t have Catholic training.
I stand by my claim that Beck is trying to restore individual American’s faith in themselves. Perhaps I didn’t explain it clearly. Beck is most certainly claiming that this faith in themselves rests on an acceptance of a higher power than the individual and than a government. I have no problem with that. Why?
Indeed, it’s important, for Beck doesn’t want an individual who thinks that Man is Mighty and All Powerful (as Obama thinks he himself is) – but that Man is Fallible. Beck wants individuals to be humble rather than arrogant. BUT – he wants individuals to realize that within this humility and within their Constitution and Laws – they CAN make a strong America. He’s saying that they did it before – they can continue to do this.
Note that I don’t view this higher power as ‘god’ (as Beck does) but as ‘Mind’. This means a sense that the universe is rational, networked, interactive and functional – rather than random and haphazard and subject merely to ‘the strongest predator’.
However, back to Beck. What Obama has done is to destroy any sense of the individual as a capable, self-accountable and thinking force…whose work brings results, who can ‘make things happen’. Instead, Obama considers the individual ignorant, biased, racist…he has many derogatory names for ‘the common man’. Obama is weakening Americans; he considers that all people must rely on the ‘higher wisdom’ of govt to govern all aspects of their lives.
The basic doctrine of America – is that the individual is capable of reason, work, results, progress, ..justice, ‘faith, hope and charity’. Obama rejects this for the hapless individual reliant – not on a personal relation with god or a higher power…but on Big Govt.
Beck is simply saying – no. We have the capacity to think – and this capacity comes from a higher power; we mustn’t be arrogant. We created a vital document – a Constitution based around the individual freedom, equality, the use of reason. All we have to do is acknowledge this, and rely on our strength, our work..and our faith that America isn’t a ‘blip’ but a vital force in the world.
I don’t know if that explains it.
Tens of thousands at the Glenn Beck Rally.
Tens of thousands? How many tens of thousands?
Well… 27 maybe 30 tens of thousands.
You mean a quarter of a million?
No! No! No! Tens of thousands!
Oh, well then why not say there were 3000 hundreds of people at the rally?
Someone might accuse us of underestimating the crowd.
Alveda Celeste King’s speech at the Honor rally.(Dr. Martin Luther King’s niece.)
“We are one human family”
“…our material gain seems to be going the way of our moral losses.”
http://www.wikio.com/video/dr-alveda-king-speech-glenn-dream-3972034
personally I’m cheering for the asteroid!!
“It’s particularly strange given that Obama is a Constitutional scholar.”
He didn’t study the Constitution because he thought it was a great document. He studied it looking loopholes. Much like a safecracker studies safes. Not because he respects the ingenuity of the design or the brilliance of the technology but to figure out how to bypass the security.
Can’t wait to hear Ed Shultz and Chris Matthews (MSNBC) try to wiggle around this one. They sure had a lot to say about the date and the venue. This should give Shultz a week of wining all on its own! Love it!
gord – Obama isn’t a constitutional scholar. Show us one, just one, published article by him that analyzes, that discusses the Constitution. Because he was a lecturer, (not a professor) in constitutional law doesn’t mean a thing. He’s just repeating a textbook.
It was a huge turnout- anywhere from 300,000 to 500,000 at least. The picture shows it all.
With a president who disparages and apologizes for America, who sneers at its people, who denigrates any who dissent as ‘tea-baggers’ and ‘unAmerican’ – this rally was focused on reminding America of their foundational principles of individual self-reliance, work – and faith in something stronger than themselves (not govt!) – something that Obama seems intent on destroying. It was a rejection of Obama’s ideology and an affirmation of American values.
There is a very interesting essay over at HotAir by J E Dyer.
“There are a lot of good people – people with whom I agree on most things – who are put off by Glenn Beck.”
But he goes on as to the relevance of today’s rally and the apparent conflict of using the word God and conservatism.
“Even many on the right are at pains to repudiate him, as they do other popular conservative mega-figures like Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh. But as I have written about Sarah Palin before, I see in Beck a quality that conservatives despise at their peril. That quality is the willingness to stand up and answer the call, no matter what: to say what he knows he has been appointed to say, and not tack or trim to catch the winds of MSM approval.”
(…)
“When we see 500,000 or more people turn out on the Mall at the end of August – in the heat and humidity, in a painful recession, after school and sports have already started in many states – are we going to insist that that’s “not conservatism,” that it’s something we need to triangulate away from and reject, because people prayed to God, got emotional, and talked about character?”
http://hotair.com/greenroom/archives/2010/08/28/what-beck-does-right/
Joe, so Beck isn’t a Christian. So what? I’d be willing to lay long odds that the gents standing behind him at the end wearing yamakas probably were not Christians either.
I’m with Gord at 8:51. If I was in the deep crap, I would want a platoon of Beck and his friends hauling butt to save mine. Not so much for most of my fellow atheists.
And like Gord, I understand that Christians and Jews created the culture that has allowed myself and so many others to thrive by the sweat of our own hard work. The fact I do not believe in their God, does not diminish my appreciation for what they have accomplished.
Maybe that is what sets apart atheists that happen to be conservative, like myself, and the rest.
I watched the live stream on Facebook.
Average viewership was around 124,000 for the entire time.
Wow – driving home tonite and listening to the news (channel unknown…) about Beck’s rally. The ‘news’ asserts “tens of thousands” – so i figure ‘ok that probably means around 100,000 in real world math..’ So yeah i’m floored – 300 to 500 thou..
Sharpton was screaming like a a, polar bear, about how Beck has stolen “their” civil rights and how they “Need Big Government” to be in power and insure “their rights”.
How come he wasn’t saying those same statements when Bush was in charge?
Was obamba a Constitutional Scholar?
Just Ask Fact Check:
http://www.factcheck.org/askfactcheck/was_barack_obama_really_a_constitutional_law.html
Apparently not.
In other words charles, you didn’t watch any of the rally.
If you had you could never have written that last line.
“Given that Beck chose to appropriate the date and location of MLK’s historic speech I think we have a pretty good idea what kind of ‘rally’ this was and what it meant to everybody there.”
Jeebuz, charles p. thompson, do you really believe that?
This was good to see. God bless America and may she shake off this attempt by the Marxists to remake America into the Soviet States of America.
Great comments by gord, ET and AtlanticJim. Marxists are not so charitable.
“I think we have a pretty good idea what kind of ‘rally’ this was and what it meant to everybody there.”
Yes we do, it was a dedication to Black History.
Unlike Al Sharpton’s black panther movement down the street, trying to bully everyone again.
black mamba – charles p. thomson is our regular troll, BTJ/DA. Ignore him. Notice how he always takes remarks out of context, reduces them and red herrings them. It’s his trademark.
Al Sharpton – if he had any sense, ought to have networked ‘his’ rally with that of Beck. After all, Beck’s rally was about civil rights – the rights of each and every American to be an individual with freedom (life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness). Instead Sharpton set his rally up in opposition – but notice, that Sharpton’s answer was not to affirm the civil rights of each individual but to support Big Government. Beck’s point was that Big Govt removes these fundamental rights.
Again, I think Beck’s focus on a fundamental causal and moral basic force that is higher than man, is important. Even though I’m an atheist, I do not accept that Man is that basic force. Obama’s ideology is that Man, in particular he Himself, IS that Basic Force. This is a characteristic of the left; they consider that Man is the basic causal force and they support Big Govt, preferably unaccountable and elitist or Dictators in that role.
Beck was rejecting this insertion of Govt/Man as the sole agent and insisting that man must be humble, recognize his ability to make mistakes – and – yet, recognize his freedom to succeed. Within the framework of the Constitution, Beck is saying that man has that freedom to work, progress and keep America strong.
