Reader Tips

It’s Saturday night, it’s hot and muggy – at least where I am – and my biodex is down a quart, so I figure, what better time for a splendidly senseless panoply of fruit hats, monkeys, tambourines, banana xylophones, showgirls, maracas, overhead shots of kaleidoscopic, choreographed arms and limbs, and….did I mention giant technicolor bananas? From Busby Berkeley’s 1943 film The Gang’s All Here, here’s Maria de Carmo Miranda da Cunha, better known as Carmen Miranda, camping her way through The Lady In The Tutti-Frutti Hat.
No, I don’t understand it either, but just look at all those purdy colours and gee-gaws…

  1. Poor Carmen Miranda, a talented Brazilian thoroughbred drafted to pull a garish Hollywood style circus wagon. What a criminal waste of talent. She wouldn’t be the last. Pissed off her countrymen no end from then on re her “stardom” which was the opposite of what American “experts” no doubt expected of their WW2 propaganda efforts.

  2. Sgt. Lejaune, Miranda – who was Portugese, but moved to Brazil – liked it. And it’s not like American “experts” held her passport or something.
RT: These are the questions that Lori Ziganto at SnarkAndBoobs expected the co-hosts of The View to ask Obama:
“Do you know CPR? Because, you take my breath away”
“Would you say that you are The MOST Awesome, or THE Most Awesome?”
“So, about your ‘laser like focus’ on jobs … your eyes are *gorgeous*, by the way”
“It’s so awful that the ‘f***ing NASCAR retards’ don’t get all the nuance-y nuance of your nuance-iness, isn’t it?”

  3. TheoSpark.net has posted some brand new “You know you’re a redneck when…” quips. Here are a few of them:
“You take your dog for a walk and you both use the same tree.”
“You can entertain yourself for more than 15 minutes with a fly swatter.”
“You have the local taxidermist on speed dial.”
“Your grandmother has ‘ammo’ on her Christmas list.”

  4. Thanks for that (10:23), Robert. It’s remarkable that just a few short moments of inchoate, inane anger from spoiled, ignorant, self-important, obnoxious meat bags who think they’re so very, very special can so *precisely* demonstrate what’s wrong with the western “progressive” world. Ugh.

  5. Thanks for this EBD. A glimpse back into a kinder, more gentle time, when , looking back we were all naive, not anticipating the rough times that we are currently experiencing.
Berkley, in his own somwehat warped way, was a genius, putting together these huge production numbers for his films. I cannot imagine the effort that it must have taken to choreograph these productions.
    But an enjoyable view nonetheless.

  6. EBD: Amen to that! In another thread recently I told the story about a rather heated exchange I got into with a Facebook “friend” about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. She essentially said that all offshore drilling should be stopped. I asked her where she would prefer the oil should come from should that happen. Her response: “All oil drilling in the world should be immediately stopped.”
This woman does not live in a cave. She’s raising a family in Colorado, heats her home, drives a vehicle, and has lots & lots of items made out of plastic. Therefore such a statement is both irresponsible and hypocritical. I told her this and then removed her as a friend from FB. A little act on my part to be sure but at least I was doing my part to hold her responsible for her views.
I’ve long thought that public shunning is highly underrated! It would be good if millions of Hypocritical Leftists bought those F######## shirts. It would so simplify who we need to shun!

  7. HeHe, I put up a comment on the website that Robert W. linked to, I don’t thin k it will appear though,I didn’t write f#@k enough.

  9. From the Telegraph.co.uk, BP’s evaporating oil slick leaves America without a villain:
“The sea’s warm surface and oil-munching bacteria have dissipated the slick to such an extent that a planeload of journalists had to fly for an hour before their pilot could find a patch of oil. His relief, according to one reporter on board, was comparable to the anxious captain of a tourist boat spotting a distant pod of dolphins.
“It turns out that the playful sea mammals, like other creatures, suffered much less damage than was forecast. A grand total of three dead dolphins covered in oil have been recovered by wildlife rescue teams. The spill has so far killed less than one per cent of the number of birds claimed by the Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska in 1989.
“With the gush plugged for the past two weeks, experts are beginning to question whether the BP spill can really be called an environmental disaster at all.”

  10. Snaphanen (Denmark):
As we reported a few hours ago, the VVD, the CDA, and the PVV have reached an agreement on the formation of a minority right-wing government in the Netherlands. It will consist of the CDA and the VVD, and be supported by the PVV. Further details may be found at the PVV website. Many thanks to our Flemish correspondent VH for the translation:

    Declaration PVV, VVD, CDA

Wilders ‘very pleased’ with the right minority government (from AD.nl)

The three parties VVD, PVV, and CDA disagree about the nature and character of Islam. The dividing line is in the characterization of the Islam as either a religion or a (political) ideology. Parties accept each other’s different views on this subject and will also act on this based on their own views.

However, there is much that binds the parties: making the Netherlands stronger, safer, and more prosperous is the common goal and starting point. Therefore — accepting each other’s differences of opinion and fully assigning to one another the freedom of expression with regard to the differences of opinion — it is agreed that the PVV will support elements of the yet-to-be-negotiated government agreement from a position of support. The VVD and CDA will on their part honor the wishes of the PVV in the support agreement to be settled.

In any case the, such support agreement arrangements should settle the details of the measures for budget cuts and firm agreements on immigration, integration and asylum, safety, and better care for the elderly, whereby it is clear that for the PVV the willingness to support the budget cuts is linked to the content of the agreements to be settled in the fields of immigration, integration and asylum, safety and elderly care.

Mark Rutte [VVD], Geert Wilders [PVV], Maxime Verhagen [CDA]

  11. Revnant: Thanks for posting that link. Reading through, it confirms for me what I’ve suspected for a long time, namely that the mindset and group think ostracization practices of the Radical Left and Radical Muslims are so very, very similar.
On the surface you might think that such groups would be diametrically opposed but in point of fact, their ignorance seems indistinguishable. And by the way, both should be repugnant to any Westerner who values liberty and democracy!
