The Jones Act

Business Insider;

According to Foreign Policy, thirteen entities that had offered the U.S. oil spill assistance within about two weeks of the Horizon rig explosion. They were the governments of Canada, Croatia, France, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Republic of Korea, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United Nations.
The U.S. response – Thank you, but no thank you, we’ve got it.

  1. Well for the sake of consistency there need to be throngs of wild-eyed malcontents out in the streets, burning effigies of The One and lambasting his unilateralism.

  2. Actually when this spill first appeared to be out of control, I wondered whether the Norwegians and Dutch would come into the picture. Good to know the Obama Administration is working on that new era of reaching out and cooperation.
This episode reminds me of the whole Kursk incident, when the Russians rebuffed the offers of British and Norwegian aid, only finally accepting their specialized help when it was far too late for the crew of that stricken submarine.

  3. Thats it, thread over.
    No it isn’t, Nazi!
There, now it’s over. And somehow I lost.

  4. Watched the video supplied by “Joe”. I think I’ve finally figured it out. The One hears Gulf and he thinks it’s golf.

  5. Obama’s GOLF Oil Spill
    There fixed that for ya…

  6. Never let a crisis go to waste.
    Solve it and it’s gone.
If a well blewout on land, it would be capped in a day, maybe two.
Have a well blowout in mile deep water, with the offshore rig burning down, and it’s an engineering nightmare to shut down the spill.
Whatever the eventual fallout of Deep Water is, never forget that they were drilling in deep water because the option to drill on land was ruled out by enviro-politics.
The Dems and the environmentalists own this disaster.

  7. Someone got the Jones act up their U-no-watt and it looks like the US tax payer/consumer.

  8. Sure BP and BO rejected help from several relevant sources (those not from Hollywood). Sure some good ol’ boys gave an example of how oil will bind to straw and could be used to protect the beaches. Not good enough.
But hey, Obama has his jackboot on BP’s throat.
He’s got the important thing covered.

  9. Like any banana republic nut. He won’t except help.
Its his pride that matters. To hell with America.
    The King cannot fail mentality.

  10. Unions like the Jones Act, it protects union jobs, that’s why Barry won’t issue a waiver.

  11. Oops,
I meant: Barak Obama doesn’t care about white people.
sorry about the joke gone wrong, poor satire on my part.

  12. “The One hears Gulf and he thinks it’s golf.”
    Louise that is priceless.
One of the things that concerns me is reports from researchers there is very little information coming out. They should have scientists from all over studying this. I see no reason not to make data available to recognized scientists. I think they fear a ‘green’ backlash now that AGW is bleeding and wounded another target is inevitable. The dispersant will have an effect and its effectiveness should be analyzed. For next time.

  13. President Obama is doing a bang-up job – something Bush would never have been able to do. Give it up, people, you’re outsmarted.

  14. I am sorry but “T” has got to be a little twerp just messin with us ..lol…i think it is quit funny ..i think “T” is like the ….this is what you would say if you were a lefty socialist commi pig..type of thing …”T” you do a good job of mimicking the left .lol.

    Paul in calgary.

  15. In a divine-like flash it suddenly came to me, and I have to apologize for taking so long to figure it out.
    “T” stands for “Tranna”

  16. Thankfully Business Insider cleared that up. People were beginning to think Democrat President Barack Hussein Obama couldn’t organize a piss-up at a brewery. But all along it was the Jones Act causing all the mischief. Meanwhile over at New Scientist they’re saying that the spill isn’t as bad as it looks.
    http://www.newscientist.com/mobile/article/dn19016-gulf-leak-biggest-spill-may-not-be-biggest-disaster.html
King Hussein may not be sure who’s ass to kick but the media knows damn well who’s ass it has to kiss.

  17. It looks like the Jones Act excuse isn’t a valid one. From commenter Ed Anger at Ace of Spades HQ…
    From the article:

Federal law has also hampered the assistance. The Jones Act, the maritime law that requires all goods be carried in U.S. waters by U.S.-flagged ships, has prevented Dutch ships with spill-fighting equipment from entering U.S. coastal areas.

    From Wiki, the Jones Act:

. . . requires that all goods transported by water between U.S. ports [emphasis added] be carried in U.S.-flag ships, constructed in the United States, owned by U.S. citizens, and crewed by U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents.

So it appears that the Jones Act could not have “prevented Dutch ships with spill-fighting equipment from entering U.S. coastal areas.”

  18. Given that BP is responsible for clean up, isn’t it their call on what contractors get hired? If there’s a couple of big ships out there that could suck the stuff up, you’d think they would be all over it like oil on a pelican.
Also true that if Barry gave even half of a tinker’s damn, the Coast Guard would have hired those ships by now. I guess he’s got better things to do, like packing the Supreme Court with useful idiots.
Good point Gym. If Sarah Palin had been president, she would have had to try really, really freakin’ hard to do worse at this than Barry has. If you stuck a pail of sand on the desk in the Oval Office and called it the president, it would have done a better job.

  19. President Obama is doing a bang-up job – something Bush would never have been able to do
Hmmm… for once, the Mentally Deficient One has actually hit the nail on the head. Try as I might, I cannot imagine Bush being more indecisive, evasive, unavailable and in general more utterly worthless in this catastrophe than has been B.H. Obama.
It took Dumbo 8 days to even comment on the spill, and another 4 to send people to Louisiana. And those he first sent were – TA DA! – lawyers. As Mark Levin observed, what were THEY going to do: plug the leak with subpoenas?
This performance is orders of magnitude worse than anything Bush could have done with Katrina. It is the expected reductio combining utter lack of experience in running anything, with sheer narcicissm. Doubtless, The One is somewhat annoyed at this environmental nuisance that is distracting him from the systematic dismantling of his country’s constitution, institutions and economy. Bummer.
Seriously, think upon this: this doofus cannot even marshall enough experts and game plans to deal with an oil spill; can you imagine him at the helm in the event of israeli airstrikes on iranian nuke facilities, or when china invades taiwan? Or, ever wonder what might have happened with obama as POTUS on 911?

  20. The whole “she is unqualified – no experience” criticism of Palin really irritated me when it was espoused by the same people who were happily and unflinchingly singing the praises of Obama. Palin at least had management experience as governor of Alaska, and mayor of a small city before that. It may not have been the thickest resumé (given the history of politics, that could be a rather dubious distinction anyway), but she was after all the junior candidate on her ticket. The Boy Wonder, on the other hand, had no executive experience, and he was the top billing on his respective ticket. Such hypocrisy!
I mean, it’s a bit like ridiculing the Oakland Raiders’ depth chart — have you not seen their starting lineup?

  21. The OIL SPILL FIASCO is not just going to KICK Obama’s ASS, it’s going to KEEP doing it.This is his KATRINA,9/11,and WATERGATE all rolled into one. One hundred years from now this is what will be remembered about B.H.Obama,”yeah OBAMATRINAGATE.”

  22. It is hard to believe that Obama admitted that he would be unable to handle a CEO BS-ing him.
Somehow, I have a feeling that Palin would be able to handle it, as would Bush. Obama just thinks we don’t need oil as we are going to run our economy well enough to keep us all fed and housed and pay off his multi trillion dollar deficits with unicorn farts and faerie wing beats.

  23. I’m afraid that’s no option either. For one, we can’t afford to become dependent on foreign unicorns. Plus I have it on good authority that they require far too much grazing ground. We should focus instead on the new arrayed panels of high ideals and good intentions.

  24. I can understand turning down help fron the Dutch, the Norwegians and the Brits. After all, what do they know about offshore oil. But to decline help from the Croatians defies logic.
