“Afghan detainees: The news not fit to print”

At The Torch:

No bleed, no lead. And almost no coverage at all. The invaluable and brave Christie Blatchford of the Globe and Mail takes on her own industry…
…quite sad. I guess a country gets the media it deserves.

Update: Meanwhile, behind the curtains:

What an irony it would be if in the end the Liberals effectively shamed the government into agreeing to a post-2011 CF Afghan mission of some sort. I would think that Prof. Amir Attaran, amongst others, would be most disappointed at such an eventuality–and that the pesky detainee docs business would have to be put out of the way first.
It would also be nice, for planning purposes at a minimum, for the CF to get firm political guidance on any future Afghan commitment pretty soon.

  1. This testimony also should have been covered a tiny bit more by our media. Another diplomat warned the Martin gov’t about problems with handing over the detainees to the Afghan. She had also written three different human rights reports over three years warning that torture was a common problem in Afghanistan.—
But Olexiuk said her advice was ignored by Paul Martin’s government.
“I don’t think anybody really cared, quite frankly,” she said.

  2. Love to see the Libs go into an election with this. Attack our soldiers during a War on a file passed along from the P Martin Government. It doesn’t get any better. Harper should be able to shred them.

  3. God bless Blatchford.
She has raised the same point that appeared on Michael Coren’s blog last week: the mediocrity (I’m being generous) of Canada’s press.
