“I Have Seen The Asteroid And It Is Us”

(Links updated after our moral and intellectual superiors tasked with defending CBC journalism chose to redirect the original links to a bondage clad booby shot. As a metaphor for the strength of their arguments, it really doesn’t get much better than that.)
(Update 2: OK, OK, stop emailing me. The booby shot is here. It seems CBC employees have finally created repackaged something stolen from the private sector into something you want to see.)
After reading this; “Read ‘em and weep…the CBC News story”

It has been too easy to blame criticism on unhappy former employees who are disgruntled because they were pushed out. It has been too easy to point fingers at older viewers who don’t like change. It has been too easy to fall back on “it’s a work in progress” excuses. The truth is, and the numbers are all too clear, the new National is an abject failure that has not resonated with the viewing audience and worse, has turned many loyal news junkies away.
With the help of a mathematically inclined friend who has access to the ratings I put together a table that clearly shows how poorly The National is doing. But first an executive summary of our findings:
We used 70 programs (Monday-Friday) in 2009 from the beginning of January to the second week of April. The National average was about 804 thousand, while CTV News got 993 thousand.
This year, 2010, we looked at 59 programs during the same period. (The Olympics made 11 weekdays not applicable.) This time the National averaged 644 thousand, CTV News — 1257 thousand. That’s almost exactly double. […]
Two other small observations. Last year, there were 9 days when The National actually got higher numbers than CTV. This season, it never got close. The other thing is that we picked a period when The National‘s ratings were actually UP! If you were to look at the September-December stretch, CTV’s numbers were regularly more than double, sometimes, even triple those of CBC’s flagship news program… The numbers are even more startling than we expected.

  1. Death by arithmetic.
Reminds me of global warming, a cause the CBC is highly addicted to.
    Maybe there is a relationship.

  2. Is that bald headed guy still on there? I haven’t watched for years but then again I quit watching Pink Lloyd about the same time.

  3. The comments at that visually stunning site infer one thing and one thing only . We are winning .

  4. Kate, you are on a roll over at the comments there. Especially liked “pity traffic” heh.
I think Kate has the pinkos frothing.

  5. Meanvile, at perfect people’s broadcaster, vee hav increase viewers by five hundred percent.

  6. Too bad CTV’s numbers weren’t the same. They are both peddling lies and bullshit… I do not watch either one.

  7. CTV is still able to double-up viewers over the National even with corpses like Robertson and Oliver and whiny brain-dead pukes like Fife.
Put Brad Giffen and Marcia McMillan on the CTV National News and we would really see the lead open up.

  8. It will be so sad to see the CBC go. Not only will I miss the news, I will miss their most excellent programming ;). Not really much difference, since I have managed to miss anything CBC related for several years now.

  9. @ Louise:
Yes, lipstick on a pig, but who would kiss it!?!

Mr neither. But at least I’m not forced to pay for CTV’s sensationalist crap.

  11. I honestly did not know. I have not watched Mansbridge (or anything other than HNIC) for over two years.
The most telling thing about CBC’s descent to the depths? What channel are you watching the Habs play on tonight? 🙂

  12. A.Cooper, I put my TV in storage about three years ago. Don’t expect to ever take it out again. TV sucks, no matter whether it’s publicly or privately funded. All gossip, all the time. Except for the worshiping Obama part. Then it’s exegesis.

  13. Maybe the CBC should be funded on the basis of their ratings.
    Introduce a little accountability.
As it stands there is none.
Give the people what they want instead of what you think they should have.

  14. Replace Mansbridge with that dashing elfin metrosexual, Ian Capstick. The man exudes CBC Toronto style.

  15. Suggestion: Call in ex-Liberal MP Joe Jordan, er CBC’s Peter Mansbridge for questioning.
And Giggles Taber. And where is Mr. MaGoo?
    …-
“MP wants Liberal Party, Graves relationship probed
A Conservative MP wants a parliamentary committee to probe the relationship between the Liberal Party and CBC pollster Frank Graves.
Peterborough’s Dean Del Mastro filed a notice of motion for the heritage committee to hold hearings with testimony from Graves and CBC and Liberal officials. Graves touched off a controversy last week when, in an interview with the Globe and Mail, he said Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff should start a “culture war” to win back office.
According to the report, he suggested the Liberals: “should invoke a culture war. Cosmopolitanism versus parochialism, secularism versus moralism, Obama versus Palin, tolerance versus racism and homophobia, democracy versus autocracy. If the cranky old men in Alberta don’t like it, too bad. Go south and vote for Palin.” After coming under sustained attack from the Conservatives, Graves issued a statement retracting the remarks. “I used incendiary language that had not been carefully enough considered. I recognize now that my stark language was understandably offensive to some Canadians,” he said. But Graves maintained that EKOS does not work for any political party.”

  16. Maybe because CBC is a Canadian owned entity. A group of interested people should go before Parliment with a plan to revitalise CBC with a different management structure. (It would probaby have to be a hostile takeover:) )It is after all Canadian owned and operated and I for one would like to see it start paying for its own way if we are going to have it around.(First choise would be to prep it for sale.)

  17. It almost sounds like your trying to make Global News (which I watch out of despair) look good! Big Beiber push on presently.

  18. I truly am blessed. My TV croaked in 1986, never replaced it. I have had 20 plus years of bliss. Well except for the odd heart stopping shriek if I click a link and it pops up CBC or CTV.shudder

I gather I’m not missing anything, then.

  20. Revnant dream, over a the ‘other’ website said it all, in a very succinct rant that would make Churchill, himself, take note! I cannot add a word!
Just Excellent Revnant Dream. Thank-you. Long may you write.

Without the mandate CBC is near worthless…The cost of operations, plus under funded employee benefits, make it a basket case… Fire everyone, then sell the frequency spectrum & facilities to Tim Horton’s
It reminds me of a U of Sask economist (NDP) that suggested the Crown, Sask-tel, had a market value.. Yes! But only to another Crown…

  22. With the CBC ratings so low does that explain why CTV has become the official Liberal bum-lickers. I mean CTV has always been a pack of Liberal bum-lickers, but is it just me or are they seemingly going out of their way these days to get the Libturd coalition “back to power”.
