  1. I’m going to drive my large American classic today for absolutely no reason at all.
425 high compression cubic inches baby. Carbureted. Zero pollution controls.
May add some tire smoke, just to rub salt in the wound. Yeehaw!

  2. Earth Day reminds us to test out our electric appliances to ensure they can tolerate a vigorous two-hour workout. Leftist ladies, you know which one to use. It’s for gaia (faint, swoon).

  3. Deja vu; I thought this had all happened on March 27th. Took me by surprise, and thus:
Some charity people “sold” (“a donation is voluntary, but it’s always appreciated!”) me a baby pine tree in a plastic bag today; I thought it was for the local children’s hospital (the Izaak Walton Killam Hospital, haha!), but on closer inspection it turns out to be something to do with Earth Lenin’s BirthDay. Now I have to scrounge a pot and soil for the damn thing, nurture it, and find it a home in the wilderness somewhere. And I’m out a dollar. Stupid hippies.

  4. Oh, and Happy Birthday Osumashi Kinyobe’s Mum. (Perhaps she and Phantom’s Mum be could team up for the Governor General gig – I would get behind that.)

  5. O’say what? In one swell O’foop.

  6. Langmann – I hunt in Northumberland County in Ontario. My brother owns a chunk of land there, near Madoc/Marmora.

You gotta love it when the Earth gives back the love, especially today.
Those who have been following NSIDC and JAXA sea ice plots have noted that this has been an extraordinary year so far, with Arctic sea ice hitting the “normal” line on some datasets. Today the Earth gave back more for us.”

  8. “The Red-Greens strike back.”
    Red Greens?
I prefer the Possum Lodge variety, thanks.

  9. Osumashi Kinyobe – why doesn’t she like the Queen? (I greatly prefer American Notions myself, but life being what it is and things being what they are I do rather appreciate Queen Liz.)

  10. Al the fish, its a ’64 Riviera. I can’t equal Barry’s half million gallons of jet-A, but I did burn 5 gallons of hi test just now, going down to the lake and back for no reason what so ever.
Quite pleasantly. Its a nice day here in Dumbtario, for a change. 🙂
JJM, do you have your patented Red Green duct tape wallet?

  11. I went for a hike 69 million years into the earth today.
Started at the top of the Dry Island Provincial Park and hiked down to the Red Deer river about 200 meters below.
On the way, layer upon layer of ancient rock became visible. The information signs at the top said these layers were formed about 63 to 69 million years ago when this area was at the bottom of an ocean.
Some time later the ocean went away and was replaced by several kiliometres of solid ice. And about 11,000 years ago the ice melted away very quickly because of some kind of global warming, and the resultant erosion carved out the valley I descended into today.
Fortunately for me there was neither an ocean or a thick layer of ice over my head as I wandered there today. Just a beautiful spring day.

  12. Instead of walking to the local A&W I drove home for lunch today. Traffic seemed a lot heavier than normal with trucks everywhere; never knew earth day was so popular around here.
40 years ago on this day I was handing out environmental literature on the Calgary mall. We all make mistakes in our lives but I learned from mine. What I’ve learned is that humans are Gaia’s means of exploring the universe and that everything we do is “natural”. So lets all do our part to ensure that atmospheric CO2 concentration doesn’t drop to plant-killing levels.
Hang onto that DDT Kate, it will be really valuable in a few more years. I’ve only got a small supply of organochlorine pesticides left, use them very sparingly, but the results are awesome when I do use them.

  13. I didn’t celebrate Ira Einhorn day, but if I did, I would have turned my girlfriend into mulch. Just like the original!
