The Government claims Saskatchewan’s Human Rights Commissioner is recommending the human rights tribunal here be scrapped. And it is being considered.
The Commissioner feels the perception of the tribunal is that it isn’t independent enough. Because of that Justice Minister Don Morgan is considering the change, “and its not seen as being independent or at arm’s length.”
Only four to five complaints a year end up in front of the tribunal the rest are dealt with though the Commission, “trying to deal with the complaints that come in at a preliminary level by way of mediation.”
If the change goes ahead those few complaints that aren’t resolved at the Commission level will end up at the Court of Queen’s Bench, with the cost the same as before a tribunal. Morgan maintains he hasn’t yet made any decision.

I truly hope the Ice-Landers will purchase the appropriate amount of carbon credits from Big Al. I mean to say that’s a lot of pollution. With Climate Gate and all, think Fat Albert will welcome this infusion of cash into his personal save the world account.
I know it’s not man-made pollution since the president of prime minister of Ice Land is a woman, but hey you wanted the gig lady. It’s your volcano.
I suppose this is one step ahead: using a real judge instead of a ‘roo court.
But the article didn’t say anything about dealing with all the crap that happens before a case gets before a judge: the free legal services for the complainer while the respondent gets bled dry trying to defend him/herself from charges that may well be spurious; the shakedown of businesses that make the economic decision to pay to make baseless grievances go away; the waste of taxpayer dollars maintaining an apparatus that is fundamentally anti-democratic, and so forth.
This isn’t half a loaf, it’s only a slice. But if it happens, it’s at least a slice of progress.
hopefully Sk will be the 1st jurisidiction to dump this leftist brain control system, because of their common sense and commitment to the rule of law, and then we will see who will follow.
Baby steps – but Bravo Sask Party!
This is only a small step, and it hasn’t even been taken yet. I’m going to save my reserved celebration until it’s actually done.
God willing, we’ll get rid of ALL the kangaroo courts.
I too will hold my celebration until it happens, but hopefully those tax fed socialist farmers(according to pillboy)will get rid of the roo courts.Rednecks standing up for themselves must really PO the lefties!!
Let the first domino fall.
It’s a start.
As the Lefties would say, we are “raising awareness” of this issue.
Not enough. This is just a new coat of paint on the old brothel. Until there are loud, painful, screams from the usual hog troughers and hangers on, it’s a bait and switch. The HRC must go.
agreed Sgt.
maybe even a trojanhorse of sorts
Reg – they make Trojans that size? Who woulda thunk it.
We need more right wing thought control.
It would be a good start and can’t happen soon enough, but I will believe it when I see it.
Another good announcement would be if the Sask Party would tell David Suzuki and Al Gore to rub salt.
Pillboy does not have a clue what he is talking about, as not too many farmers are socialist. Only his city union buddies are socialist.
My goodness. Ann Coulter certainly got things moving. We should all be thankful for Ann’s visit and the people that brought her here. There’s nothing Canadians hate more than stirring the pot or speaking the truth aggressively and openly like Ann does. Who knows if the battle will be won? Standing up and fighting for free speech you would think would be a no brainer. But apparently in Canada it’s not embraced with any enthusiasm. Any Conservative/conservative worth his salt should speak out loudly and often on the issue. I find it disturbing how frightened and intimidated the majority seem to be on this topic. Politicians in particular. Were the thousands even millions that died fighting for freedom as frightened? It’s in our hands.
Fire them all,
Great stuff; hope it spreads west fast. Can’t believe I haven’t been dragged into their little star-chamber yet myself!
On the surface, it looks great. You’re going to get rid of the human rights commissioner and save what? Two bucks per taxpayer. Wow!
In six moths from or a year from now, an important human rights issue will come up–and the press will be all over Regina whining that we are the only province in Canada that has no HRC. What happens to Brad Wall’s popularity??
Fret not. You’ll have your two bucks that’ll buy you a double double at Hortons, so you can sit with your friends after the next election, discussing the latest topic. “How did Dwayne become so popular, and so fast.”
Don’t beleive me? Just check out what happened when Elwin Hermanson tried to save coin by scrapping old Saskatchean icons. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Ken- obviously you are way too polite! While ‘rubbing salt’ might get you a very nice ham,… me, I’d tell’em to pound salt!
Yes C_Miner, the elephant in the room needs big ones.
Why not get rid of the HRC? Something like a small claims court could be used for real discrimination, which is pretty rare, I would imagine. You can’t rent a place to live without references nor can you get a job without the same. If you can’t come up with clean, honest character references at the very least, then maybe the landlord/employer has just cause for turning down an applicant.
PS: April 15-2010
98th anniv. of the sinking of the Titanic. Good day to be talking about bad moves!!
Yes, this seems to be a start in the right direction. But everyone who has commented here needs to contact The Sask Party and let them know that we demand action on this, not just talk. Ditto PMSH and the Conservatives on the national scene. [The new Senators have started the ball rolling in Ottawa, but skittish politicians need constant pressure to get Section 13.1 abolished.]
Joe Citizen: please give us an example of an “important human rights issue” that needs to be decided by a “human rights” commission without any of the safeguards of the justice system and with all the bias and unfairness of the HRCs.
If you folks do this than you rightly have the most guts in Canada.
JMO
Awesome. It’ll never happen in Nova Scotia; it would mean cutting a couple dozen cushy government jobs, and that just is not allowed to happen with the NDP in command.
I’m thrilled at the prospect of Saskatchewan ( the cradle of Canadian communism) will be the high water mark where Canadian sovietism retreats behind a wave of renewed traditional Canadian civil liberty.
Makes me proud to be from Saskatchewan!

They could be tasked with putting things on top of other things in their offices, at the same salary. Still a waste, but a less harmful one.
joe citizen: They are getting rid of the Tribunal, not the Commission. Just a tiny step, not to get excited.
