  1. You cagey devil, Vit.
I really wanted to know what the Greek quote said — and then I found whatever-the-heck-they-are!
    ‘Eloquent, I’m sure.

  2. In colloquial use, Joe, demon typically carries the connotation of “an evil supernatural being; a devil”. In the old Greek, supra, the reference to daimon (as we might have it in English today) more particularly refers to “an attendant spirit; a genius”.

  3. Re: Morrison
I visted his grave at “Le Cimitière du Père Lachaise” in Paris.
It was a “different” feeling. Some people claim he was killed by the CIA!! Who knows! The “Lord” works in mysterious ways!

  4. Leo @ 12:10 “George Galloway beaten up by Islamic extremists…” Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

  5. An anagram of “True to his own spirit” is “Whinier Tourist Stop” … not sure what it says when you play it backwards.

  6. Mao Stlong ask,
How many egg lolls you wan?

“China tries to sterilise 10,000 parents over one-child rule
Family planning authorities have detained hundreds of people against their will in a campaign to sterilise 10,000 men and women suspected of trying to violate China’s strict birth control policies.
About 1,300 people were being held in cramped and poor conditions in offices throughout the small town of Puning in southern Guangdong Province and are forced to listen to “lectures” on state rules limiting the size of families, the Nanfang Countryside Daily said.
In the years after China launched its strict “one couple, one child” family planning policy in the late 1970s, abuses such as forced later-term abortions, sterilisations and even the killing of newborn babies were widely reported.”

  7. The Collapse of Complex Societies
Complexity, writes Tainter, describes a variety of characteristics in a number of societies– many differentiated social roles, a large class of administrators not involved in the production of primary resources, energy devoted to different kinds of communication, centralized government, etc
“number of challenges with which the Universe can confront a society is, for practical purposes, infinite,”

  8. We must save the Planet for the children, Soccermom. Why don’t you care about their future!?

  9. [Security And Exchange Commission charges Goldman Sachs With Fraud
…. What makes this particularly interesting was that GS has aligned itself behind the Obama administration’s financial reform plans.]
    And
[as the Wall Street Journal notes that Chris Dodd’s bill makes federal bailouts a lot more likely in the future:]

  10. I know I’m risking the wrath of Vitruvius here, especially since I can’t do a good link to the whole cornucopia, but… If y’all need entertaining, and have even a fleeting familiarity with 30 years of pop culture, google “Literal Videos” and click on something.
The idea is that music videos are re-done with an impersonation of the original vocals, but the lyrics narrating the actual visual content of the videos.
I particularly recommend White Wedding (Billy Idol), Total Eclipse of the Heart (Whosit?) and Billy Jean (Michael Jackson), but knock yourselves out.
(Hey, at least it’s not about Barack Obama.)

  11. Contact info for Surrey School Board – I wonder how they feel about wasting $500,000 in buying carbon credits after this weeks volcano ate them all up.

  12. Apropos the wrath or pique or management of Vitruvius, just this afternoon I was giving some thought to his role here at SDA. The most apt description I could come up with — it just popped into my head as I was driving along the Danforth — was Kate’s Rottweiler.
Rottweilers certainly come in handy sometimes.

  13. Thanks, Jethro, I just watched and adored “Love is a Battlefield” (Pat Benatar).
(I wonder if I could make money off this…)
