Open thread on the men’s hockey final (and the Olympics in general).

The nattering “own the podium” critics seem rather quiet of late… somewhere out there a Husky gas station is missing their flag.
The only thing that could spoil this is if there’s drinking after the game.
Heh – “Where was Iggy?” He left after Russia was eliminated.

As you probably have noted I’m a very old man who lives in kelowna B.C. I have family yet in Saskatchewan. Yes, I did do a term as Postmaster, Regina a long time ago.
I, as well as most Canadians swelled with pride through out these Olympic games and my heart was glad and the tears did flow. To experience this euphoric National pride was beautiful.
I want to share with you a glimpse of something else that I saw as these games came to a close.
Since 1968 our land and it’s people have been brow beaten into a submisive quiet, almost too humble a land in which National pride was not only frowned upon, but was ridiculed. That lengthy and undeserved humilty was forced upon us by the intellect and bullying of Pierre Elliot Trudeau and the rest of the so called elite who felt they new best.
Today that era has been put to rest. We have now shed that false and pious humility and can take our place as a proud people who have earned the right to stand tall. For this old guy to have been around to see this change has given me a sense of relief.
To finally say goodbye to Pierre and bury him forever is something I only dreamed about.
God bless our Country and thank you to our Olympians for giving us so much.

  3. The last Olympic hockey game I watched was against the Soviets. Somehow the hatred isn’t ther any more and I can’t seem to get too excited about who wins.

  4. I hate to say this ~~ but the Canadians look better than the USA ~~ I’m saying this during the overtime commercials. And again, I salute the winner…who ever that may be.

  35. Excellent. Now they have to have an appropriate celebration. May I suggest Alberta Springs and Monte Cristos with perhaps a little Pol Roger?
    Great game and great camp watching all our team clutching their bouquets (what are those things anyway- they look like over ripe broccoli heads)

  36. Anyone catch what cbc newsworld was showing while our boys were winning the biggest game ever?? A show about Carbon Traders!Poor poor cbc.Now cut the hell out of their funding as they really are out of the loop.

  40. Jai alai, sumo wrestling, curling, ice hockey – there’s no reason to get excited about these regional sports. They’re like video games – a somewhat useful way to cope with boredom, but lacking in broad cultural significance.

Having been repeatedly told that Canada can now be finally proud of something, I salute all those who ran, skated, fought, died for Canada before the 2010 Olympics whose achievements, according to CTV, Donald Sutherland, Rod Black et al, do not measure up to the level of patriotism that RBC, Rogers & CTV have managed to hype. Those poor lads landing on Juno Beach in Normandy, if only they could have felt proud about who they were.
    This pathetic new Canadian insecurity is sickening. Congratulations to the athletes of today. A salute to all those who went before them…proud Canadians even without the New Canada.

  48. Thank you Kathryn I stand corrected. But could they have not picked bouquet contents that less resembled the things they put on your plate when you order a steak at the Keg?
    Canada has lots of red indigenous flowers like say Indian Paintbrush?
    As an avid gardener, I just thought the Olympic bouquets were a little weenie.
    As for the Aspidistra, look to that that great polemicist, Mr. Orwell who wrote “Keep the Aspidistra Flying”. A rather depressing novel but his use of the plant as symbol is quite illuminating.
    We have done well, weird bouquets aside.
