  1. Kevin B.-You have completely misinterpreted Sven’s comments. Why are you assuming that he is saying the Americans/Canadians are not “speed skating minded” in relation to anything but his own country? Using the comments of a DUTCH speed skater as an excuse to lambaste all of Europe displays appalling ignorance.
Secondly, Sven Kramer is a twelve time World Champion-he’s pretty familiar with the sport so I’m sure he knows who all those people are. But his comments that Canadians/Americans are behind in speed skating aren’t meant to convey the impression that we are worse at the sport than they are. The point the Dutch reporter and Sven are getting at is that American/Canadian sports coverage of speed skating sucks in comparison to the Netherlands because sports fans are only dimly aware of the sport here. Like hockey in Canada or baseball in the US, speed skating is sort of a Dutch sport and closely followed over there. So calm down, Kev.
JEff- An elite athlete like Sven has likely given hundreds of interviews to foreign media, and judging from his reaction this is the first time he has been asked to state his name and country of origin. At major events such as this one the media are given TONS of info from the organizers about every athlete and which countries/athletes are competing in which events. What that NBC reporter did is not standard practice.

  2. Would have Catriona Lemay Doan treated an interviewer so daftly? I doubt it. She has more graciousness in her little finger than a spoiled brat like Sven could hope to fathom. I also know Netherlanders that need a whole lot more than a stupidly worded question to launch such an insult back.
Sven may have won skating races but it takes much more to be a real champion.

  3. You people who think he was justified in being so rude have to be kidding. Even if she was being “stupid” he was a complete ass, and out of line if you ask me. He may be a big deal in The Netherlands, but he is just a speed skater to the US. I am sure that is hard for his huge ego to grasp. There is no need to be rude to someone, just be gracious and act like a decent human being. The difference between this guy on American TV and Bill Clinton on American TV is that everyone knows who Bill Clinton is, so that was a dumb example. This guy means nothing to our county, he needs to get over himself. The Dutch should be embarrassed to be represented like this.

  4. Sven Kramer was very rude and showed poor sportmanship. Serves him right to lose the 10,000m race in such hilarious fashion.
