  1. If you want to get rid of the risk of a housing bubble, get ride of the CMHC. If the government wasn’t insuring them, banks wouldn’t make risky mortgages. Its pretty simple, but no gevernment in this country would do that.

  5. dp, actually, I would like to see just that happen, considering female genital mutilation (FGM) is practiced in much of Africa. Now known as female circumcision, in order to make it more PC and palatable. Rusty pieces of metal or glass are used to remove a womens clitoris and other parts of the female genitalia without any anesthesia, many of these young girls, as young as 5, bleed to death, become infected and are infertile. Of course the infertility is blamed on the women. Sexual intercourse is exceedingly painful as are monthly periods with child birth being nothing short of excruciating and many childbirth deaths occur as a result. The babies also suffer much more trauma traveling through the birth canal and all the associated conditions, some permanent. Whats good for the gander is good for the goose.

  6. dp and Oz
    This is anecdotal BUT,
I’m old enough to remember the appearance of DDT on the market, and the belief prevailing at the time that the stuff was harmless to higher life forms. (A few smart asses actually drank small quantities of the stuff to prove the point.)
I grew up on a ranch with lots of wooded coulees and plently of rimrock that made excellent nesting sites for several types of hawks. Beginning in the early ’50s their abundant numbers decreased until the sight of one was a sufficiently rare event to be remarked upon.
We suspected that the near-extinction was due to hawks (or their prey) eating grasshoppers that had been poisoned with dieldrin. (This was before the theory of thin egg shells due to DDT ingestion had been propagated). In retrospect, the idea that DDT was the culprit seems most credible. Following the ban on the stuff in North America, most hawk species made a comeback, although a couple of varieties were never seen again. The regeneration took about 20 years and was noticed by all the rural people in the district – not by scientists or by bureaucrats with axes to grind but by people living on the land.
No scientific proof of causation but – damned suspicious circumstances.
