And not courthouses.
Zakaria Amara, 23, the group’s ringleader, pleaded guilty on Oct. 8. A police informant described him as being a “time bomb waiting to go off” and having a “total indifference to innocent life.” He was sentenced this week to life in prison, but will be eligible for parole in six years.
Saad Gaya, 21, a McMaster University student, pleaded guilty on Sep. 28. The group’s ringleaders selected Gaya to drive one of the bomb-laden trucks to its target. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison this week, but will be eligible for parole in 3½ years.
Ali Mohamed Dirie, 26, a Somali-Canadian, was sentenced to seven years in prison after pleading guilty to smuggling guns for the terrorist group. While in prison, Dirie “took an active role in recruiting other inmates to adopt extreme jihadi beliefs,” the Crown prosecutor said during his trial.
Saad Khalid, 23, was the first of the group to plead guilty. The Saudi-born Khalid was sentenced to 14 years but could be released on parole in just more than two years because of seven years’ credit given for time served. Khalid bought electrical components and recruited another person into the group. Crown prosecutors say they willl appeal his sentence.
Nishanthan Yogakrishnan, 18 at the time of his arrest, is a Sri Lankan convert to Islam. He was convicted last September and sentenced to 30 months, but credited for time served and released on parole. Yogakrishnan was first person found guilty under anti-terrorism legislation passed by Parliament in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks in the United States.
Amin Durrani, 23, was sentenced yesterday to 7½ years in prison but will be released today on strict parole, having been given extra credit for time already served in custody.
RELEASED
The following have signed peace bonds in which they agreed to undergo rehabilitation and stay out of trouble, and in exchange the Crown agreed not to proceed with their prosecution:
– A father in his mid-40s, described as a spiritual leader to some of the accused.
– A recent university graduate, described by a lawyer as a model citizen.
– A young university student.
– A man originally charged with importing firearms for the group.
– Three young offenders released in February 2007.
Or the Toronto Star.

From Thomas Walkom’s column:
“Terrorists from the Front de Liberation du Québec who were convicted of a 1970 political murder quietly served their time and resumed their lives. But separatist terror ended and the FLQ disintegrated”
A bunch of Frenchman who give up at the first set back? My, my… isn’t that unusual?
I thank the several commenters above for their kind words.
I thank the trolls for reminding us all -why- the Toronto 18 got the joke sentences they did. Its because the provincial and federal justice systems are run with an eye to keeping the likes of our socialist trolls here happy.
Somebody above mentioned the word “backlash”. This is something that Lefties are always going on about, and blaming the eeeeeevile conservatives (us, in other words) for creating this inhuman atmosphere of violence against Muslims and immigrants generally.
I’d like to observe at this time that Lefties don’t understand the idea of a backlash. A backlash is not small groups of young men running around beating up Muslims and painting swastikas on mosques. We haven’t even seen that yet, but that’s what Lefties are afraid of, really. Punks misbehaving and making them (big hearted Lefties) look bad by association.
My friends, a backlash is when MacKenzie King rounds up every single Japanese man, woman and child in the country and sticks them in work camps in the BC interior. Or ships their sorry asses to Japan, whether they spoke Japanese or not, lots of that was done too.
That is a backlash. And it will not be Conservatives doing it, because we don’t believe in that sort of thing. Its ugly and stupid, and is really the worst form of government abuse of power outside of mass killings.
No, it will be the Liberals doing it, calling Conservatives cowards and traitors the whole time.
This will occur when the likes of our trolls fully realize the nature and capabilities of the enemy we all face. That will be -after- they nuke a city, unfortunately. Nothing short of that will make any impression on the Toronto dwelling Lefty, except perhaps being stomped on by a roving band of young Muslim men and having their SmartCar burnt.
You’ll know we are there when Dr. Dawg starts screaming for blood. There is no hawk so fierce as a Liberal who’s been mugged.
Personally, I’d like to avoid that whole thing by ignoring the IMBECILES like Dawg etc. and taking intelligent, effective steps to -destroy- Islamic terrorism here in Canada, and make the stupid jihadi b@st@rds afraid to even come here. Jihadists should get a fight-or-flight adrenalin jolt when they see a maple leaf.
Any suggestions as to how that might be accomplished, while protecting and indeed increasing the personal freedom of Canadians? I’m thinking jail serving bacon for breakfast, lunch and dinner might be a start.
well i’ll tell ya….it’s a goddamn good thing sharia law wasn’t implemented in Ontario when those silly bastards were asking for it….
i can just visualize those 18 sorry bastards dangling from cranes beside the CN tower….a sight to strike terror into the black heart of every phony imam and wannabe jihadi from sea to shining sea…
all i want is the T-shirt concession…
Phantom @ 9:37 Agreed, well said.
TAhe popular press will not put this on the front page. Everything is Haiti. Everyone should phon e or write their klMP expressing their opinion.
DrD has it right, if I sold wheat across the border I would go to jail.
john begley….i hope that comment was sarcasm, and i missed it. sharia law CONDONES killing infidels. It would be the cops swinging for daring to try to stop the jihad!
Phantom….and make them cook the bacon before eating it! Oh.And let their women walk around WITHOUT burlap sacks on.
I still think LEO should have waited till the gang tested the bomb, or if they did not plan to test, till they went ahead with deployment. Because now anyone can speculate that ‘what if they abandoned their plan later?’
the only thing more disgusting that the “sentencing” is the frackin’ justification column in the Star. Links to that piece of rag should have a warning tag: Not Safe For Sane Readers.
The Phantom: “Any suggestions as to how that might be accomplished, while protecting and indeed increasing the personal freedom of Canadians? I’m thinking jail serving bacon for breakfast, lunch and dinner might be a start.”
Make deportation as easy as writing traffic tickets.
Phantom,
How does the government manage to deport young Americans while claiming being backlogged on terrorist deportation?
For how much longer are we going to allow the BS?
They think we are stupid and we act that way, so it’s par for the game. They do whatever they want, we don’t hold them accountable.
If someone does something the rest start screaming ‘barbarian’! Yes, f**k, at this point only barbarian means would work – everything else is being ignored. 6 nations have proven that only barbaric actions produce results. Counter that!
We have our men & women Military/Civilian putting their lives on the line Every single day in Afghanistan for what??
So that we can allow Home Grown Terrorist get a slap on the wrist by some feelgood liberal judge.
Jeeezzz H C***** time to get them out bring them home, The hell with them We need to fight the Terrorist at home, Liberal Judges. This judge should aplogize to every single man & women over there And to the families, friends of those that have already made the trip home by giving the Ultimate Sacrifice.
GD liberals got us in there in the firstplace!! And why? Because we were trying to get to these terrorist training camps.
aRRRRRRRRR ENOUGH now iam pissed off again for the day.
I understand that banning people is not easy and not always right, but just scanning over new’s posts hurts vision and brain.
In FidoNet it used to be called ‘extremely annoying behaviour’. Every 2nd or 3d word is misspelled, for Chris sake!
Aaron, new is a troll who can’t spell Toronto the same way, twice, in the same paragraph. A plant.
Thanks for explaining, Sounder.
But what in my post has hinted you that I might not know? Wasn’t I sort of asking the moderator(s) why they keep this garbage on when it’s clear it’s garbage?
I have nothing against other posters expressing radical, collectivist, marxist or any other ideas in any shape and form – but when there is not even a hint of idea, not a shred of deliverable message – why keeping it on the blog?
Is this blog starting following, for example, Canadian Gunnutz down the toilet? [sigh]
Nicely put Mr. G – answers Kate’s implied question.
Why are people suprised?
These kinds of sentences are what we should expect from decade after decade of Liberal and Left/Liberal appointments and control of our Canadian Courts and Judiciary.
But what in my post has hinted you that I might not know? Wasn’t I sort of asking the moderator(s) why they keep this garbage on when it’s clear it’s garbage?
Because I”m not paid to babysit you, that’s why. And when there are three useless replies for every troll comment, the person who can solve the problem can be found in your mirror.
What a total joke. We’ve learned nothing from Air India. We pat would-be terrorists on their heads and congratulate ourselves on a job well done. What was done? We scared some frat boys into some jail time but then taught them how to play the system.
My position is that it is better to have trolls visible than to drive them underground.
Besides, we have the opportunity to evaluate their mindset—-or lack thereof.
In the meantime, we can maintain an image of even handedness. That is a signal difference to lefty sites which censor anything counter to their notions.
The main damage McArthyism did was to drive the commies underground, to regroup invisably to surface better prepared. This obortion of government south of the 49th is the fruit of McCarthyism….IMNSHO.
If some of these men are born Canadians, should they not have been charged with treason? Does that still exist? I would think the sentences under this type of charge would be harsher.
Imagine a day when CPC majority government implements a real “life” sentence and dumps the oxymoron “25 year Life sentence”. I forty or fifty year sentence doesn’t sound adequate either, life should mean life for these scumbags.(the Terrorists, not the journalists)
From the star article —“who were convicted of a 1970 political murder quietly served their time and resumed their lives.”— How about the families of the murdered men ? If murdering for political reasons is sort of a ‘soft’ murder and the felons are deep down good people, why even bother sentencing them? A finger-wagging and stern scolding, and they probably won’t do it again.
Stephen and A Different Bob:
The same thing happened to me at the airport. I made the mistake of saying hello to the screener. Because of that she thought I would be the perfect person to select for a pat down since I seemed friendly and wouldn’t get angry at her. This shows we have a real problem with the people who work as screeners. They do not see the importance of their job, they just want to put in their time, get their paycheque and go home. This is largely a result of their being unionized and as a result, they accept no responsibility and can only perform robotic work. The first change is to remove the unions from this position. The training of these screeners must change also to reflect the threat that faces air travel today. However, once again I see a political correctness issue! How are we ever going to overcome this political correctness that is so pervasive everywhere?
I want round ups. I want mass deportations. I want real sentencing. I want my citizens to wake up and realize the threat that is radical Islam.
All Conservatives should take heart in the PM’s statements today on 2 for one sentencing.
Keep voting for the liberals….we are now seeing the results of liberals ruling the judiciary…and canadians seem to want more……wake up people
> Because I”m not paid to babysit you, that’s why
man iptables
Ah come on, these are just poor disenfranchised Canadian youth. They’re exactly like you’re kids – Except they know in their hearts that your racist and hate them because you didn’t buy them a Playstation 3 with thier social assistance………you people should have loved them more!
and meanwhile steve-o harpoon fiddles (and shuffles cabinet) whilst rome burns.
but the strident right wing claim proroguing is a good thing in the face of a very clear need to tighten the LAWS regarding terrorist activities thru LEGISLATION.
This will of course change, right after one of these groups pulls off a terror plot and blows something up. THEN the gloves will come off, and the pendulum will swing all the way the other way with mass deportations, hangings, shoot-first-ask-questions-later policing, the three AM boot through the door and etc.
The Phantom: In an otherwise fine post you go totally off the rails here. No my good man, if there is a terrorist hit, we will double-down on our suicidal multi-culti orthodoxy.
And so will America.
The real travesty IMHO besides the typical stupid sentencing is why did this take so long to come to trial? If I remember correctly there was some 400 police, CSIS and other agency personnel involved in following, recording and photographing these terrorists yet it still took over 3 years to give them these laughable sentences!
The untold millions sucked into the vacuum of lawyers and our legal system is just abysmal with the Air India debacle of 25 years and counting one of the worst examples.
Can you imagine what will happen if one of these muslims actually blows something up?
“Can you imagine what will happen if one of these muslims actually blows something up?”
Virtually nothing because, as kate says, “This country is being run by crazy people.”
I’m waiting for the news headline “Paroled Terrorists seize Toronto’s CN Tower and convert it to a Minaret”
Aaron,
If you are counting on other people, at their expense, to make life comfortable for you – you may be more happy at a liberal site. If you don’t want to read garbage, get killfile, firefox, and geasemonkey … they are all MSG free.
Me No Dhimmi said: “…if there is a terrorist hit, we will double-down on our suicidal multi-culti orthodoxy.”
MND, I don’t think so. The average liberal in this country is run by emotion. Unlike in the USA our liberals feel all comfy because our country is a Peace Keeping Nation, not imperialists run by Exxon. We are the good guys. Thank you Pierre Trudeau and Lester Pearson.
If jihadists kill a large number of liberals in Toronto or Vancouver, liberals will turn on a -dime-. It’ll be like frickin’ magic. They will be saying “after all we’ve done for you, you do THIS?!!!” Then they will move heaven and earth to get revenge. They will be merciless.
This is because liberals are at heart unthinking, self absorbed b@st@rds interested only in getting what they want, when they want it. They are hateful and intolerant, without honor or moral restraint. As we all know to our cost, yes?
Should jihadists manage to get on the wrong side of that intolerance, they will have opened the biggest can of whup-ass they’ve ever seen.
And the Liberal Party will be very happy to accommodate, as we all know and as history shows. Result: round ups, mass deportations, concentration camps. It Has Happened Before.
That’s who the Canadian Left is, MND. They’re worse than the jihadis, you ask me. At least the jihadis are good for a stand up fight, right?
Know thine enemy.

Your reasoning is sound, on the otherhand I can’t help thinking that they will just blame George Bush and Limbaugh.
We westerners have been “winning” (in a cultural sense) for so long we are overconfident. It seems rational to me to accept their words and deeds as evidence that they are truly enemies. In this case, they are guilty- they intended to go to war against Canada. If they are Canadians they shouldn’t be allowed to stay free in Canada under any circumstances. I don’t think the US justice system is doing much better- it just jails them longer.
I say never let them breathe as a free Canadian or American.
