Reader Tips

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation and in particular for those listeners who may have a chance to tune in on Friday but not have a chance to visit SDA Late Nite Radio again over the Thanksgiving weekend, here are Baz Luhrmann and a female vocalist whose name I would like to know performing Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen) ¤ in 1999 (7:10). This single is the most well-known form of an essay titled “Advice, like youth, is probably just wasted on the young”, written by Mary Schmich and published in the Chicago Tribune as a column in 1997.

For our friends in more equatorial climes who are wondering why we in Canada are celebrating Thanksgiving this weekend, well, you see, Thanksgiving is a harvest festival, and given that it has been snowing all day in Edmonton today, about a half an inch so far, I’m sure you can now see how it is more than time for us to get on with it 😉

Also, for those who may have missed yesterday’s reference, or
who are otherwise interested, I have added a brief introductory
essay to my web page on The Pathology of the Blogosphere™.

Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

  1. I always thought the reason we had Thanksgiving in Canada earlier than in the US was we, in Canada, had so much less to be thankful for. :}

  2. Re: Polanski and those who think he should be given special considerations because of this art. That would be like saying that the Bishop of Antigonish should get “considerations” because of his calling.
I remember reading that the Irish playwrite, Brendan Behan had spent a night in a Toronto jail during his North American tour, for drunk and disorderly. His wife felt that he should be given liberties because of his talent, suggesting that Toronto was too philistine and protestant. Yeah well, I’m of Irish descent and R.C. and deserved every punishment thrown at me for my drunken excesses. Toronto may be guilty of many iniquities, but not of picking on Brendan.

  3. Larry- From what I’ve heard so far, Polanski’s crime was actually worse than Bishop Lahey’s. Not to diminish Lahey’s crime, he deserves a lengthy jail sentence.

  4. Posted this in the CBC thread as off topic, but here it is again:
Read in horror as Susan Bonner writes a whole article bitching about how she was unfairly treated by those evil Americans because she’s a “foreign national”. She was late to a press briefing in the White House and started to sneak around when she was caught. Somehow she spins this as Americans being xenophobic.

  5. Gah! The wretched sunscreen song. They played that thing to death on CKUA about 10 years ago. If I told you in detail how much I loathe it, this post would run on like one of “new’s” screeds, so I won’t.
Suffice to say, it sucks, mightily.

  6. I believe the Canadian Thanksgiving is based on Martin Frobisher who celebrated a harvest festival in october of 1578 preceeding the pilgrims in Plymouth by a considerable margin in 1621.
of course harvest festivals had been going in the northern hemisphere in the fall for likely about 5000 years.

    DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
OTTAWA (Dow Jones)–The Canadian and Alberta governments signed a letter of intent to award Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSA), Chevron Corp. (CVX) and Marathon Oil Corp. (MRO) a total of C$865 million (US$817.6 million) in funding Thursday to help create the first commercial carbon-capture demonstration project in Canada’s oil sands industry.
The province of Alberta will provide C$745 million in funding and Canada’s federal government will provide C$120 million over 15 years to fund the companies’ joint-venture system to capture some of the greenhouse gases emitted by oil production in the Athabasca oil sands region in northern Alberta. The joint-venture project is the first awarded funding from a C$2 billion pool that the Alberta government set aside for carbon-capture technology last year.
The joint venture project, which is expected to be operational by 2015 pending a final regulatory approval, will be held 60% by Shell Canada Ltd., and 20% each by Chevron Canada Ltd. and Marathon Oil Sands L.P. It will be implemented at Shell’s Scotford oil sands upgrader near Edmonton, Alberta’s capital city. The project is expected to capture up to 1.1 megatons of greenhouse gas emissions annually, or a 40% reduction from current emission levels.
Shell Canada Vice President of Sustainable Development Graham Boje said the group’s final investment decision on the project depends upon regulatory approval from the federal and provincial governments.

  11. Krauthammer has yet another evisceration of BO. This time he’s hamlet. http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2009/10/09/young_hamlets_agony_98640.html
I have heard a couple of commentors wise the word “dithering” to describe BOs conduct – is his new Nick going to be dithers?
The mistake that lbj made in vietnam is the one that dems even now have yet to grasp and understand that by bugging out of afstan (and letting Iraq fall back into chaos) they are committing the same mistake yet again. That is that when at war a leader has to stop reacting so closely to the political tooIng and froing on the domestic political scene. They must be prepared to weather the fall in popularity that often happens (just ask hst when he saw 10000 casualties in Korea in five days) and do the right thing – stay the course, be upfront with Americans on how things are going and what the long-term objective is. Lbj failed miserably on all accounts and was a failure both in vietnam and as a POTUS. Axelrod and BO et al have been failing thusfar (see link above) and whiskt they may see abandoning Afstan and Iraq as a way of avoiding a quagmire and a ruination of the domestic socialist agenda that they are trying to impose, in fact they will only be creating a far greater morass that will ruin more than just domestic objectives but BO as POTUS and god knows what order of magnitude more of future conflict in the years to come.

Women and Ignatieff: What went wrong?
I thought Dion was a geek, and actually felt sorry for him.
So, along came Iggy. I thought he would be a serious threat because he was right wing, like a mini-Harper. He promptly rejected many positions he had taken before politics, like support for the war in Iraq, and became something he isn’t, a Liberal.
A woman’s sixth sense keeps her safe. I have listened to that sixth sense many times. What I can sense in a second, is a phony. Some guy trying to pick you up, your sixth sense kicks in, and a little alarm bell starts ringing loudly in your head. You can’t pinpoint why it’s ringing, but you better listen to it.
That’s how it is with Iffy. It’s not just what he says, it’s his body language when he says it. Like this little gem, Iffy singing out of tune:”

Liberal Senator Baker’s epitaph has been received, recorded, and filed for future hanging on the PET Cemetery Wall of Shame.
Zap! You are frozen forever, Liberal Senator Baker. Iffy weeps.
    The epitaph reads:
““It doesn’t help in the public view, I must admit,” Liberal Senator George Baker said in an interview. “However, if we didn’t do this, then it wouldn’t help in the justification of the Senate being in existence.””
    Date of unveiling: TBA.

“Bank of Canada Poll Shows Record Sales Optimism, Credit Easing
Canadian businesses reported record optimism about their future sales and said credit conditions were easing for the first time since 2007, according to a survey by the central bank.
Sixty-nine percent of executives said sales growth will quicken over the next year, while another 16 percent expect it to slow, the Bank of Canada said today in a quarterly Business Outlook Survey. The gap is the biggest since the question was first asked in 1998.
“Responses to the autumn survey suggests that the Canadian economy is recovering, as all indicators of business activity have increased,” today’s survey said.
The report is another sign Canada is emerging from its first recession since 1992, coming the same day that Statistics Canada said employers added 30,600 jobs in September. The central bank’s senior deputy governor said yesterday that Canada’s recovery may be slowed by a strong currency.”
