Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation, here are Henry Hall and his orchestra performing Teddy Bears’ Picnic in 1932 (3:15), with Val Rosing singing. Paraphrasing from the links: this ’32 Hall recording was apparently used for more than 30 years by BBC audio engineers to test and calibrate audio equipment. Its especially good recording quality and the large tonal range of the music made it ideal for checking the frequency response of the equipment.
Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

Pop here to read the thing. John Kerry admits the truth. He’s rich so he doesn’t care, but it is important for you all to be poorer – to save the planet, you know.

Ezra Levant is going to be on The Micheal Coren show tomorrow (Wednesday). Should be good.
I enjoyed the Teddy Bear’s Picnic. In 1983, our four year old son skated to this piece in the local figure skating carnival.
Does anyone know which Shaw (Star Choice) channel the Coren show is on?
I rarely applaud anything the cbc airs, but tonight on the National they have a segment on the woman that had trouble coming back from Kenya. It doesn’t look good for her or the libs. === http://www.cbc.ca/video/#/News/ID=1286723699 === The segment starts at about the 38 minute mark. Not only could she not remember her son’s birthday, she also forgot how to spell her name, and more.
That’s the music I picked for Iggy’s foresty ad for the Liberal Party! “If you go down to the woods today…”
That song brings back memories. No,I am not that old ,but I have a recording of it done by Zappa and Beefheart.
Has been around since forever I think. Slightly ominous tune, suggesting impending doom or some such. Suspect if frightens children; but that’s what made it fun.

Ken, Coren is on CTS 355 on Star Choice (Shaw) at 12.30 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Thank you gellen.
Thanks for the memory there Vit. I fondly remember listening to that recording as a child. The only difference was our old turn table didn’t have that new fangled automatic turny onny turny offy thingy. You started the record then very carefully set the needle on the record. The one speaker on the machine didn’t do bass very well, so much of the music was lost but it was great entertainment anyway. Kinda went along with listening to the AM country station on a similar bassless radio.
The music of my lifetime.
I first heard this song over 60 years ago as a little boy when we used to play it on a record player attached to a battery powered radio. The record player was 78 RPM like in this video, but the power to turn it came from a hand-wound spring.
Wallyj @ 1044 – You have recordings of Teddy Bear’s Picnic by Zapa and Beefheart. That’s in jest, right? Please answer in the affirmative.

Slight correction, the National segment starts at approx. 33:30 point of the broadcast. I have to agree with wallyj, as CBC should get credit for running this story.
There’s something fishy about this story. Who forgets their own child’s birth date? Who cannot spell their own child’s name? Who misspells their own name? Who knows only the acronym of their employer, and not what that acronym stands for? These were just a few of the glaring inconsistencies demonstrated the person who was interviewed by the Canadian High Commission personnel (Suaad Hagi Mohamud or someone else).
The circumstances surrounding this incident are puzzling in the extreme. The picture painted by the Liberals of an innocent victim maliciously treated by her government is facile in the extreme.
The identity of the woman was apparently questionable enough from the photographic record to warrant further investigation. She manifestly failed to prove her identity by being unable to answer the most basic of personal questions over the course of three interviews, two of which were face to face. It seems to me sufficient investigation was undertaken to judge this person an impostor, and proceed accordingly. Is it possible a mistake was still made? Sure.
But, if what this woman says is true, that it was her, and only her, that originally showed up at the airport, was subsequently interviewed by High Commission staff three times, and eventually had her DNA tested, then a large portion of responsibility should fall on her shoulders.
IMO.
I dont own them but I remember Zappa doing Teddy Bears picnic in some sort of falsetto.

My tip of the day notes that Stats Can shows building permits in Sask taking a huge hit: more than a 30% drop.
Coupled with data showing near-record-high EI numbers, these figures add to the lengthy list confirming that the Wall government has badly mismanaged the Sask economy.
Quite the surprise to true fiscal conservatives who believe in solid economic management.
The word is that a multi-billion dollar deficit is mere months away from being announced.
What happened to the fiscal prudence claimed by Brad Wall just a year ago?
That was a cool old tune, and it would have went perfectly with Ignatiaff’s latest infomercial. I imagine a similar record player ready to seduce anyone unlucky enough to get caught at his home for tea. I see a old tweed suit jacket in my minds eye also.

Stephen, contrary to what politicos say, governments don’t “manage” the econopmy, except in socialist states. Haven’t you noticed there is a gl;obal recession going on?
Note to you: Govwernments MIS-manage the economy. In fact, they are so good at mis-managin the economy that they shouldn’t be allowed to touch it.

WRT the Kenyan woman and her pasport: How easy has it been in the past for new Canadians to head back home, conveniently ‘lose’ their passport , not report it,and when the ‘finder’ has safely landed get a new one? My family experienced theft of their passports in France. No prob getting back home, fortunately for them. And yes they reported it immediately.
I think this kind of scam has gone on for awhile, and the beaurocrats are just getting into the game.
Good for CBC on this one.

Yes — and why wasn’t Iggy himself on the list? My feeling is his problems stem from the fact that he is just the wrong person for the job.

Prof. Martin is not didactic. He doesn’t announce the answer. Rather, he provides clues. One of them is the enormous increase that took place in the size of government since the 1950s – and most specifically in the 1970s. In 1900, government commanded 10 per cent of Canadian GDP; by 1950, it commanded 25 per cent; by 1980, it commanded almost 40 per cent. Although the size of government increased gradually throughout the century, it was mostly in the 1970s that government abandoned business acumen for bureaucratic bulge.
The 1970s were Liberal Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau’s decade – and it was during the ’70s that government turned antagonistic to business. In the early years of the century, government relied on business for economic growth. By 1950, government had turned neutral. By 1970, it had turned negative and proceeded to demonstrate by example how businesses should be run. Government interference multiplied, ranging from the Canada Development Corp. (Canadair, de Havilland, Petro-Canada) to the Canadian Wheat Board and the CNR – some of the biggest corporations in the country. Government deficits inexorably followed, finally reaching the point at which interest on the national debt represented government’s largest single budgetary expense.
Guru Doc Oz made a big show out of getting the vaccination for H1N1 on his show and then announcing that everyone in the audience will be getting a free vaccination (screaming adulation from the audience)…. but in this interview, the Doc says they are not giving it to their children. Huh??? I thought the most vulnerable were the children and pregnant women. What’s going on anyway? (5 minute mark)

“Saudi sex braggart gets 5 years, 1,000 lashes
CNN.com ^ | 10/07/2009 | Mohammed Jamjoom
(CNN) — A Saudi court on Wednesday sentenced a man who caused uproar by bragging about his sex life on television to five years in prison and 1,000 lashes, according to Ministry of Information officials. Mazen Abdul Jawad talked openly about his sex life on the controversial show.
Mazen Abdul Jawad, a 32-year-old airline employee and divorced father of four, spoke openly about his sexual escapades, his love of sex and losing his virginity at age 14. He made the comments on Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation, which aired the interview a few months ago.
Saudi authorities shut down LBC offices in Jeddah and Riyadh after airing the interview on an episode of its popular show “A Thick Red Line.” Abdul Jawad was arrested shortly after the program aired and charged with violating Saudi Arabia’s crime of publicizing vice.
On the program, Abdul Jawad is also shown in his bedroom, where he holds sexual aids up to the camera. The episode ends with him cruising the streets of Jeddah in his car looking for women.
The episode caused an uproar in deeply conservative Saudi Arabia, where sharia, or Islamic law, is practiced. Pre-marital sex is illegal, and unrelated men and women are not permitted to mingle.
The segment in question has been posted on the video-sharing site YouTube since its initial broadcast last month, and has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times.”

Great reading Glenn. The author certainly gets it right:
“Fortunately, the 1970s are behind us – yet we’re all equity investors again, this time round in General Motors and Chrysler. Government could get it right one of these times, of course. More probably, we’re merely repeating our mistakes.”
Always important to remember that Party politics is not aligned to their ideology, but to lining their pockets…..
marcia…it’s called creating a fear, and stirring the paranoia and then presto having the solution in you back pocket.
Would we need the government to take care of us if they didn’t create so many problems?
