Gangs abound where positive responsible male role models are absent, mainly Dads. Chicago, Toronto, Halifax… they are all the same in that respect.
The violence seen in the video in the link is par for the course when positive male influences are not there to guide and mentor the young men of society.
Society needs good men. Without them, it falls apart.

What is disturbing is the incidence of better students being deliberately targeted for being “white”. Being “white” is code for trying to excel in school. It’s not so much a racial matter as a socio-economic matter….herd mentality….aggression towards an anomolous individual.
Education is the solution to poverty and criminal behaviour but that is difficult to achieve when mediocrity is imposed by group violence. It’s simple enough…..the gang bangers instinctively recognize education as anethema to their social structure.

In the US, the leading cause of death for black males under age 40 is death at the hands of another black male. The only thing different about this case is that we got to see it. Sadly, it’s same old, same old.

In a somewhat tangentially related story, in the 1980’s the NFL Oakland Raiders employed two of the most feared cornerbacks in the league: Haines and Haynesworth I believe.
In reading about one of them in a Sports Illustrated article at the time, I learned that he grew up in inner Chicago and learned to play football on empty asphalt parking lots. The only real rule was that guns and knives had to remain on the sidelines.
Sheesh, and we complain when the city park grass gets too long or the outdoor rink isn’t flooded frequently enough…

Sounds like Lester Hayes and Mike Haynes. Haynes played for the Patriots from 1976 through 1982, and for the Raiders from 1983 through 1989. Hayes played his entire career with the Raiders, 1977 through 1986. I think that Haynes attended high school in Los Angeles. Hayes was born in Texas and attended Texas A&M; it’s possible that he attended high school in Chicago.
That stomping was vicious and it indicates more than a lack of male role models. Same for the bus beating last week.
And waiting for a model male role model can be hopeless in some communities.
Most likely a lot of drugs involved.
I do have a short-term solution, but no one would agree with it.
I would just like to know what the hell is wrong with people.
It’s the total breakdown of normal human civilized values.
Thus, these criminals are not really human, and should be locked up for life.

I get your point John, thank you. But I think it’s a real issue. There are some genuine and serious systemic problems in core areas of large US cities. I’m not sure how much of it is remedial. Cheers.

Education might enable you to leave this economic substratum but most certainly won’t enable you to live in it. As noted, education disables you because others reject your aspirations of individualism. Either you are a member of The Group or, you aren’t allowed to exist. [Heh, sounds a bit like Obama, doesn’t it?].
It isn’t simply lack of male role models – though that is important. Female role models are equally important. But, what is missing is the notion of the economic unit being The Family. In this type of community, the economic unit is The Gang. Not the family; you aren’t allowed to support your family by yourself; you are beholden to The Gang.
In addition to The Gang as your support, you can add in The Government, which supplies some of the money for your living – house, food etc. The Gang supplies the expensive extras.
How does one deal with this breakdown of the nuclear family and this denial of individual merit and work? I think you have to make this type of economy – welfare and Gang – unprofitable.
At the moment, both are quite profitable. The first is essentially risk-free; the second has risks, but operating within a group reduces the risks..and criminality can be extremely profitable.
That means reducing the welfare lifestyle – where you have people living this way for generations. Why? Because they can.
And, stepping up the restrictions on the criminal economy, to make it more risky and unprofitable.
Not to worry, not to worry. When Obama’s Secretary of Education implements the year-round, 10-hour-day school schedule, kids won’t be murdering each other after school just outside school grounds.
No, they’ll be killing one another in the classrooms, with proper adult supervision.
